A fresh new look at time travel, Damian came to Formby and wowwed us, he also wrote the script for Puss in Boots (Shrek-a-sequel) This has some superb ideas and lends itself to a sort of Dr Who meets real history with better villains than usual and kids that have to act/do proper things. Fast,funny and thought provoking

sebenarnya lumayan menarik tapi otakku menolak untuk suka. dari hal 1 sampai akhir aku gak bisa terlalu masuk ke cerita. bagiku cerita ini entah kenapa ngerasa buat anak2 kayak film2 spy kid. ditambah kovernya (pake foto orang) yang bikin imajinasiku gak bisa tumbuh. aku baca ini setelah baca time rider. dan otakku terus menerus membandingkan bahwa time rider 100 kali lebih bagus dari ini. (dari bahasa, alur, humor dan sarkasmenya).

untuk novel yang cukup tipis, bacanya malah lama. jadi aku bimbang apa history keeper ini harus aku lanjutin ke buku berikutnya atau distop saja...

"Jake Djones und die Hüter der Zeit" ist der Auftakt zu einer spannenden Zeitreisen-Reihe, die den Leser ab der ersten Seite in ihren Bann zieht.
Man kann dieses Buch guten Gewissens als eines der Lesehighlights des Jahres 2012 bezeichnen, da der Autor eine wirklich einmalige Story geschaffen hat, die alles besitzt, was ein gutes Buch dieses Genres benötigt. Es mutet wie ein Abenteuerroman in historischem Setting an, der die Elemente Zeitreisen, Geschichte und Fiktion miteinander verknüpft und drumherum eine einfallsreiche Handlung aufzuweisen hat.
Die Geschichte um Jake Djones und die Hüter der Zeit ist ab der ersten Seite bis zum Schluss durchgehend spannend konstruiert und besticht durch ungemein viel Kurzweil. Viele überraschende Wendungen und eine gute Portion Geheimnisse schüren die stetige Neugier des Lesers, der einmal angefangen, nur ungern wieder aufhört mit dem Lesen.
Die für das Verständnis benötigten Informationen ergeben sich nach und nach aus dem Zusammenhang, da der Autor sich nicht mit langwierigen Details aufgehalten und stattdessen die Action und Spannung stetig geschürt und angefacht hat.
Damian Dibben hat viel Wert auf historische Genauigkeit gelegt, wodurch das Interesse des Lesers geweckt wird und der Informationsgehalt noch zusätzlich geschichtlich interessierte Personen zufriedenstellen dürfte.
Die Atmosphäre ist stets sehr geheimnisvoll, aber sehr angenehm gehalten, wodurch man sich in dieser Geschichte rundum wohlfühlt.
Das Ende enthält noch einmal eine ordentliche Portion Dramatik und einen Abschluss, der ein tolles Fundament für die folgenden Bände bereitet, in sich aber abgeschlossen ist.

Die Protagonisten entwickeln sich Schritt für Schritt. Als Leser erhält man immer nur die Fülle an Informationen, die für ein Verständnis erforderlich sind, wodurch sich die Hintergründe der einzelnen Personen nach und nach ergeben und bis zum Ende noch nicht klar offenbart wurden. Doch gerade dies macht die einzelnen Charaktere so interessant; diese leichte Undurchschaubarkeit, die sie so lebendig erscheinen lässt.
Sie sind keinesfalls stereotyp und haben alle ihre Ecken und Kanten, die ihnen Leben einhauchen und sie dreidimensional erscheinen lassen.

Damian Dibben zeichnet sich durch einen bildhaften und cineastischen Schreibstil aus. Die von ihm beschriebenen Ereignisse treten dem Leser lebendig vor Augen und lassen ihn in die Story eintauchen.
Nebenbei liest sich "Jake Djones und die Hüter der Zeit" sehr flüssig und durchweg angenehm.

To be honest, I thought this book was awful. The plot line is intriguing, which was why I bought it, but the writing...and the characters... Oh dear!
I found the dialogue silted - both the modern and back-in-time. It was as if he was forcing the story on us through the dialogue. His descriptions - especially in the crucial escape scene - left me reeling with confusion. I still done know how Jake and co. got out of there. Once into the book, I found the plot weak. And as for the characters. Honestly, there is not one I can say I like. They were shallow and poorly developed. The writer's voice - as apposed to the narrator's voice - screamed through with the development of his characters. The writer was literally telling me what to think about them, instead of allowing them to develop through action and dialogue. Dibben keeps telling me how alluring, beautiful and smart Topaz is, but none of her actions support that. And as for Nathan ... a less-likable, more contrived hero, you'd be hard-pressed to find. I hate slating books, because as a writer I know the effort and soul needed to create them (not to mention the courage to publish them - opening ones heart and mind and ego to the critics of the world) but this was one book I that left me disappointed. Sad.

This book is an absolute Gem. Meant to be read to or by Children its engaging and atmospheric and a turbo Charged read. My Son, 9 and I read it together and looked up the places and landmarks as we went along. It is a really thoughtful informative read, educational too.. but all wrapped up in a energetic package. We cant wait for book two that is out I believe in September

Als Jake auf dem Nachhauseweg entführt wird, ahnt er noch nicht, dass dies der Moment ist, in dem sich sein Leben komplett ändert. Er weiß noch nicht, dass er mithilfe einer geheimnisvollen Flüssigkeit namens Atomium durch die Zeit reisen kann, dass seine Eltern in eben dieser verschwunden sind und dass es einen bösen Prinzen gibt, der die Geschichte, wie wir sie kennen zerstören will...
„Jake Djones und die Hüter der Zeit“ ist der Debütroman des britischen Autors Damian Dibben und der Auftakt zu einer abenteuerlichen Romanreihe durch die Geschichte.
Am Anfang der Geschichte fesselte mich weniger die Handlung, als die wunderbaren Beschreibungen. Die Atmosphäre wurde so gut beschrieben, dass ich mich mitten in einem regennassen Tag in London wiederfinden konnte und alles um mich herum vergas. Während die Handlung etwas verwirrend war, begeisterte mich das Ambiente in der Londoner Außenstelle der Geschichtshüter und erste Reise in die Vergangenheit, denn diese lässt nicht lange auf sich warten.
Die Geschichte kommt ohne große Einleitung aus, wodurch man gleich mitten im Geschehen ist. Alle wichtigen Aspekte, wie z.B. die vergangenen Tage, die Jake erlebte, werden Stück für Stück erzählt, sodass der Leser über die entscheidenden Momente im Bilde ist.
Ab der Reise nach Venedig lies mich die Geschichte nicht mehr los. Einerseits ist die Handlung sehr spannend, temporeich und gefährlich, denn immer wieder geschehen unerwartete Wendungen und Jake wächst über sich selbst hinaus. Andererseits versteht der Autor es, die mittelalterliche Welt vor dem inneren Auge des Lesers aufleben zu lassen. So ist Venedig eine tolle Kulisse, aber auch das kleine deutsche Dorf und besonders das finstere Schloss von Prinz Zeldt.
Aber auch die Charaktere gefielen mir. Es gibt zwar eine Einteilung in „gut“ oder „böse“, die jedoch ins Wanken gerät. Besonders Jake entwickelt sich innerhalb der Geschichte weiter, aber auch viele andere Figuren lernt man von ganz unterschiedlichen und unerwarteten Seiten kennen. So ist mir im Nachhinein eine Person sympathisch, die ich am Anfang nicht ausstehen konnte.
„Jake Djones und die Hüter der Zeit“ hat mich begeistert. Es fesselt durch die spannende Geschichte, die wunderbar beschriebenen Schauplätze und die ganz unterschiedlichen Charaktere! Deshalb freue ich mich sehr auf den zweiten Band, der bereits auf Englisch unter dem Titel „Circus Maximus“ erschienen ist und im antiken Rom spielen wird.

Was würde ich tun, wenn Zeitreisen möglich wären? Welche Orte in der Vergangenheit würde ich besuchen? Welche Personen der Geschichte würde ich treffen wollen?

Diese Fragen stellen sich mir sofort, wenn ich ein Buch in der Hand halte, das sich mit diesem Thema beschäftigt. Einmal Mozart beim Komponieren über die Schulter blicken, mit Claude Monet am Seerosenteich in seinem Garten in Frankreich spazierengehen, Leonardo da Vinci beim Bau seiner Flugmaschine bewundern oder dabei zu sein, wenn das erste Buch gedruckt wird... das wäre schon toll, aber es wird Fiktion bleiben. Zeitreisen sind auf dem heutigen Stand der Wissenschaft nicht möglich, auch wenn sich theoretische Physiker und Philosophen die Köpfe heiß diskutieren, ob es parallele Universen gibt oder wir uns eines Tages durch ein Wurmloch hindurch den Weg zu unserem früheren Ich bahnen können. Bis es irgendwann vielleicht so weit sein könnte - was ich ehrlich gesagt mir nur schwer vorstellen kann - begnügen und vergnügen wir uns fiktional mit Zeitreiseromanen. Solch einen möchte ich heute vorstellen: Damian Dibben hat mit »Jake Djones und die Hüter der Zeit«, dem ersten Band einer Reihe voll Abenteuer eine Geschichte geschrieben, die mich mit Abenteuerlust erfüllt und ganz in den Bann des 16. und 19. Jahrhunderts gezogen hat. Begeben wir uns also auf eine Reise ins Venedig Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts...

Zurück in die Vergangenheit - Worum geht es?

London, Gegenwart. Ein heftiger Sturm tobt über die britischen Stadt, als Jake Djones, Sohn ganz normaler als Badezimmerinstallateure arbeitender Eltern in einer mysteriösen Limousine entführt wird. Doch die Entführung stellt sich schnell als vielmehr wichtige Mission denn böse Absicht heraus, als Jake von seinen vermeintlichen Entführern und deren Sprecher Jupitus Cole erfährt, dass seine Eltern als verschollen gelten... in der Zeit, genauer gesagt im Venedig des Jahres 1506! Jake traut seinen Augen und Ohren kaum. Doch das ist nicht alles. Er erfährt ebenfalls, dass er ein Diamant sei, ein Mensch der fähig ist, unglaublich weit zurück in die Menschheitsgeschichte zu reisen, weiter als viele Menschen es vermögen. Ehe er sich versieht, befindet er sich auf einem alten Segelschiff namens Escape und begibt sich auf die Fahrt durch die Zeit zu einer einsamen Insel, auf der sich der Stützpunkt der Geschichtshüter befindet. Dort beginnt für Jake und seine Gefährten Topaz Honoré, Nathan, Charlie und Papagei Mr Drake eines der größten Abenteuer, die sich Jake jemals träumen ließ und auch eines der gefährlichsten...

Leichte unterhaltsame Lektüre

Ich wurde auf dieses Buch aufmerksam, als ich zum ersten Mal die Webseite des Verlages besucht hatte, welche extra für die Buchreihe Jake Djones erstellt worden war und passend zum Buchcover in den gleichen Farben gehalten ist. Dort findet man auch den Buchtrailer zur Buchreihe, die mit Band 2 bereits in den englischsprachigen Ländern Erfolge feiert. Band 2 entführt uns in die Zeit der Antike, ins alte Rom, doch der Folgeband ist bisher bei uns noch nicht erschienen.

Eindrucksvolles Cover

Das Cover der deutschen Ausgabe ist sehr gelungen und gefällt mir besser als das britische Cover. Silbrig glänzender Titel, das Symbol der Sanduhr umrahmt von den beiden Erdbällen links und rechts erhebt sich leicht positiv geprägt vom Cover. Im unteren Teil des Covers sieht man die Illustration der Insel, auf der sich der Stützpunkt der Geschichtshüterorganisation befindet: Mont Saint-Michel. Auf der Rückseite des Covers sieht man die fünf Helden des Buches, ja es sind fünf, der Papagei gehört ja auch dazu. Sein Herrchen Charlie, Nathan und Topaz Honoré begleiten Protagonisten Jake Djones auf der Suche nach seinen Eltern und helfen ihm, sich in den Wirrungen der Zeitgeschichte zurecht zu finden. Sobald man den Schutzumschlag entfernt, hat man den dunklen Einband vor Augen, welcher wie gemasertes Holz aussieht, sehr gelungen wie ich finde. Der Penhaligon Verlag hat sich große Mühe gegeben, das Buch ansprechend zu gestalten.

Spannendes Debüt trotz Klischees

Damian Dibben zeichnet fünf Charaktere, die klischeehafter nicht sein können. Der Held, der gar nicht so recht weiß, dass er einer ist und welche Fähigkeiten er in sich verbirgt, eine junge, äußerst attraktive Frau die allen den Kopf verdreht und mit Intelligenz und Mut punkten kann, ein leicht zerstreut wirkender, junger Nerd-Professor à la Einstein in jungen Jahren, ein arroganter, von sich selbst höchst überzeugter Angebertyp, der mich desöfteren lachend die Augen rollen ließ, tummeln sich in insgesamt dreißig Kapiteln und kämpfen um den Erhalt der Zeitgeschichte, immer hoffend, dass Jakes Eltern doch noch irgendwo zu finden sind. Was geschehen ist, darf nicht verändert werden, das sieht jedoch der Widersacher - böser, intriganter kaltherziger Klischeeprinz Xander Zeldt - anders und plant, alle Macht an sich zu reißen und die Geschichte zu seinen Gunsten zu ändern.

Trotz aller Klischees überzeugt die Zeitreisegeschichte mit durchaus witzigen Pointen, punktet mit leichtem, flüssig zu lesenden Erzählstil und wusste mich für ein, zwei Tage hervorragend zu unterhalten. Länger brauchte ich nicht, um dieses Buch durchzulesen, denn es fesselte, war spannend und abwechslungsreich. »Jake Djones und die Hüter der Zeit« erfüllte vom ersten Moment an alles, was ich an einem guten Buch mag, denn auch der Spannungsbogen nimmt gleich von Anfang an gut Fahrt auf. Ein waschechtes Abenteuer wartet auf den Leser!

Man darf allerdings keine hochwertige Literatur erwarten, das Buch stellt keine großen Ansprüche, es fordert nicht wirklich heraus. Es unterhält einfach gut. Es bietet keine großartigen Überraschungen, natürlich ist vieles vorhersehbar und oft musste ich schmunzeln, weil der Autor es gar so offensichtlich vor Augen des Lesers führt. Aber es störte mich nicht, überhaupt nicht. Der Plot gefiel mir ausgesprochen gut, der Autor umschreibt in bunten Farben die Umgebung, wandelt zwischen den Zeiten, tobt sich in bildhaften Beschreibungen der Gebäude aus, die ein buntes Kopfkino erzeugten. Ich konnte das Meer rauschen hören, ich hörte das Rascheln der barocken Kleider, ich atmete den Duft der Geschichte des 16. und 19. Jahrhunderts ein. Ich sah es richtig vor mir, das Schloss, all die Portraits von wichtigen und gefährlichen Personen, die ganze Atmosphäre ist so geheimnisvoll, all die Maschinen, diese ganz besondere Schreibmaschine, die Beschreibungen der für die Geschichte relevanten Gegenstände.

Kleiner Minuspunkt: Das Ende kam dann doch ein wenig zu schnell heruntergewälzt rüber, die Ereignisse drängten sich auf den letzten Seiten, als müsse der Autor nun aber so langsam aber sicher zum Schluss kommen. Man erfährt als Leser aber noch ausreichend genug, um sich auf Band 2 zu freuen, wobei die Geschichte im ersten Band zum vorläufigen Abschluss mit eindeutigem Hinweis auf Fortsetzung findet. Wie, werde ich natürlich nicht verraten! Aber eines ist gewiss: ich werde Band 2 natürlich auch lesen und freue mich schon darauf!

Mein Fazit: Lesenswertes, leicht beschwingtes Zeitreiseabenteuer mit gutem Unterhaltungswert ohne zu große Ansprüche voraussetzen zu wollen! Leseempfehlung für alle Fans von Zeitreiseplots, Abenteuergeschichten, egal welchen Alters. Empfohlen wird das Buch für Jugendliche - gerade auch weil es Interesse an geschichtlichen Tatsachen weckt -, ich bin der Meinung, das die Altersgrenze nach oben hin offen ist!

Rezension:
Die Geschichte ist wichtig. Denn nur dadurch das die Geschichte so verlaufen ist wie sie passierte ist die Gegenwart so wie wir sie kennen. Ein eingreifen in die Geschichte würde auch die Gegenwart verändern. Genau das ist der Plan des Prinzen Xander Zeldt, er will die Renaissance verhindern um die gesamte Menschheit unterjochen. Solche eingriffe in die Geschichte zu verhindern ist die Aufgabe des Geheimbundes der “Geschichtshüter”. Die Geschichtshüter sind Menschen verschiedenen Alters und Herkunft welche in der Lage sind durch die Zeit zu reisen. Solche Geschichtshüter sind Miriam und Alan Djones, welche ins Vendig des 16. Jahrhunderts reisen um Hinweisen nachzugehen. Doch bereits nach wenigen Tagen bricht die Verbindung zu ihnen ab und sie gelten als verschollen. Verschollen in der Zeit. Niemand weiß wo sie sind und ob sie überhaupt noch Leben. Ihr Sohn Jake Djones, denkt bis dahin er sei ein ganz normaler vierzehn jähriger Junge dessen Eltern ein kleines Chaotisches Sanitärgeschäft führen. Doch nun muss er plötzlich lernen in der Zeit zu reisen um seine verschollenen Eltern wieder zu finden. Glücklicherweise hat er dabei tatkräftige Unterstützung von dem etwas über eitlem Nathan, der bezaubernden Topaz und dem schrulligen Genie Chalie welche schon länger im Orden der Geschichtshüter tätig sind. Gemeinsam reisen sie den Eltern hinterher ins 16. Jahrhundert und stellen sich den Herausforderungen die Gegenwart zu retten.



Fazit:
Jake Djones und die Geschichtshüter waren für mich direkt zum Jahresbeginn schon ein Highlight. Es ist ein klasse Geschichte welche spannend und mitreisend erzählt ist und bei der keine Langeweile aufkommt. Es sind grandiose Charaktäre von denen jeder einzelne seine eigenen Eigenheiten hat. Sei es der Eitle und stehts humorvolle Nathan oder der etwas schrullige Charlie mit seinem Papagei auf den Schultern. Mich persönlich haben Jake und die Geschichtshüter ein wenig an die Harry Potter Bücher erinnert – ein haufen Halbwüchsiger stellt sich der Gefahr des Bösewichts und rettet die Welt, nur diesmal ohne Magie sondern mit Zeitreisen. Aber ich fands super und denke das auch diese Reihe sich super als Buch und Filmreihe für Jung und Alt eignen kann. Für mich war Jake und die Geschichtshüter ganz klar ein 5 Sterne Buch.

Ich muss sagen, ich fand das Buch erstaunlich gut! Damit hätte ich eigentlich gar nicht gerechnet, weil es Versprechungen macht, die es einfach nicht halten kann. Etwas in der Art wie "Der neue Harry Potter"... Das ist meiner Meinung nach immer anmaßend, egal bei welchem Buch, aber ich muss sagen, dass Jake Djones einiges von Harry Potter hatte und damit diese Betitelung ausnahmsweise mal schon irgendwo zutreffend ist.
Zunächst einmal ist das Buch ebenfalls ein All Age Roman. Es wird aus verschiedenen Sichtweisen geschrieben, einige davon gehören auch erwachsenen Charakteren, was dem Buch das Kindliche nimmt, mal ganz davon abgesehen, dass es in diesem Roman zum Ende hin einiges an Gewalt gibt.
Mir gefielen auch die Charaktere wirklich gut. Das Buch bietet eine solche Vielfalt an Charakteren! Aus allen Zeitepochen und Ländern, kommt es einem wie ein bunter Haufen Paradiesvögel vor, was mir wirklich gut gefallen hat. Generell war es wundervoll, dass der Autor so viele verschiedene Orte in ganz Europa einbaut. Lustigerweise spielt sich ein Großteil des ersten Romanes in Deutschland ab. Der große Countdown findet zum Beispiel auf dem Kölner Dom statt und das war definitiv mal etwas anderes nach all den amerikanischen Romanen, die man in letzter Zeit so gelesen hat.
Ich mag Zeitreisen ja generell sehr gern, hier kam sogar hinzu, dass Damian Dibben die Art und Weise wie die Hüter der Zeit springen wirklich gut beschrieben hat, so dass man einen Eindruck davon bekam und sich das sehr gut vorstellen konnte. Es war natürlich nicht komplett logisch (denn wenn es das wäre, gäbe es Zeitreisen ja tatsächlich), aber es hatte schon eher etwas von einer wissenschaftlichen Erklärung statt einer magischen. Dadurch war der Roman auch mal was anderes in diesem Genre.
Mit am besten hat mir allerdings neben den Charakteren (hier besonders auch den "Bösewichten") die Spannung des Romanes gefallen! Das Ende ist ein einziges auf und ab bei dem man gar nicht anders kann als den Roman so schnell wie möglich zu beenden. Ich freue mich auf mehr und glaube, dass Jake Djones das Potential zu einer wirklich tollen neuen Reihe hat! Und das beste?! In Band zwei scheint es ins alte Rom zu gehen ♥

Ein viel versprechender Auftakt zu einer spannenden neuen Reihe, die mit viel Fantasie durch Zeit und Raum in Europa springt!

I purchased this book as I had seen great reviews and I wanted a fun and lighthearted new quirky series to delve into. Let me say that this series will not disappoint. I thought perhaps being 18 that it may be too young for me but there are elements of the characterisation and plot which are humourous for all ages and entertaining.

From the first chapter of the book I could tell that this story would be my style and fun to read as it was an easy read and very engaging and amusing. The opening characterisation of Jake (the main character) I found to be a little dull, but as the chapter continued and the book continued I found myself being drawn into his character and although somewhat predictable in his actions he is an honorable and engaging character.

Jake wasn't the only character I found that I liked, I enjoyed Topaz for her spunk and Nathan for the humour he brought to the story, which really made it 5* not just 4. I also thought that Charlie was an adorable character and Mr Drake (of course) but overall every single character was expertly realised and intriguing.

I thought that the premise of the book and the story line was interesting and certainly very open because of the amount of History available to explore and I enjoyed the little tidbits of information about the time periods which we were given along the way. I am certainly eager to begin book two and I shall be doing so asap as I received a copy free through a giveaway on Goodreads recently.

I know the book is aimed at younger readers, however, I am more disappointed than expected. I really like time travel books but unfortunately I didn't enjoy this one. I couldn't feel the cultural climate of the past, it wasn't authentic at all. I believe it wouldn't actually matter where and when the action takes place, which sounds ridiculous about a time travel book. What also annoyed me was that some characters seemed to know a lot of random historical facts an average person wouldn't know. Also, I found some aspects of the story quite predictable. Keeping my fingers crossed that the next two books are gonna be more original 🤞🏻

It's not the best book I've read, but it's a good book. The plot was rather simple, but all in all, a good book to read. I find the Jake's feelings towards Topaz rather cute, but I think the fact that he loves her... It's probably too soon for him to feel that.

Satu lagi novel bertema perjalanan waktu meramaikan dunia buku fantasi Indonesia. Kali ini, kita akan diajak bertualang bersama para penjaga sejarah untuk err menjaga sejarah. Pertanyaannya, mengapa sejarah harus dijaga? Apa tugas para penjaga sejarah ini? Dan, bagaimana tepatnya mereka menjaga sejarah ini? Sejarah memiliki beberapa makna, yakni (1) sejarah untuk merujuk pada masa lampau secara keseluruhan, dan (2) catatan/rekaman dari berbagai kejadian yang telah berlangsung di masa lampau, yang tersusun secara kronologis sejak awal mula keberadaan hingga saat ini. Terkait tugas para penjaga sejarah ini, mereka harus memastikan agar sejarah yang telah berjalan di masa lalu tetap berjalan sebagaimana mestinya sehingga tidak menggeser atau mengubah kondisi zaman sekarang.

“Sekali sesuatu sudah terjadi, kita tidak akan pernah bisa berusaha mengubah masa lalu.” (hlm 109)

Seperti kita tahun, masa sekarang merupakan bisa menjadi seperti saat ini karena terjadinya peristiwa-peristiwa tertentu di masa lampau. Sebuah atau beberapa pergeseran besar di masa lalu konon dapat menyebabkan masa sekarang menjadi tidak seperu masa yang sekarang. Sejarah ibarat jalan yang bercabang ke berbagai arah, bukan garis lurus, sehingga ketika ujung awalnya berubah, maka berubah pula ujung akhirnya. Inilah yang membuat para penjelajah waktu tidak diperbolehkan terlibat atau aktif dalam peristiwa yang sedang berlangsung di masa lampau agar mereka tidak mencampuri jalannya sejarah. Sayangnya, selalu saja ada orang-orang yang memiliki kecenderungan merusak. Tidak lain tujuan mereka adalah untuk menciptakan kekacauan dalam linimasa sejarah. Inilah yang kemudian menjadi tugas utama para penjaga sejarah, yakni untuk melindungi jalannya sejarah dari orang-orang seperti itu.

“Sejarah itu sakral. Masa lalu mungkin penuh dengan kengerian, tapi ingat Jake, kengerian itu bisa ribuan kali lebih buruk. Zedlt dan orang-orang sepertinya berhasrat menjadikan dunia ini lebih suram dan jauh lebih kejam. Mereka ingin menghancurkan sejarah kita.” (hlm 109)

Jake Djones yang berusia 14 tahun sama sekali tidak mengetahui kalau kedua orang tuanya adalah para agen-agen penjaga sejarah. Sampai suatu ketika, kedua orang tuanya lenyap dan tiba-tiba saja Jake diculik sekelompok orang asing untuk menaiki kapal. Hampir saja Jake mengira dirinya diculik kalau saja Bibi Rose-nya tidak ikut serta dalam kapal tersebut. Di sini lah semua berawal. Jake mulai mengetahui rahasia tentang orang tuanya, tentang cara kerja para penjaga sejarah, tentang perjalanan waktu, dan juga tentang kemampuannya yang mampu menembus flux waktu. Jake mewarisi penglihatan belah ketupat dari kedua orang tuanyaatau dengan kata lain, dia juga bisa melakukan perjalanan waktu. Kemudian, berlayarlah mereka menuju Point Zero yang merupakan markas pusat para penjaga sejarah.

“Sejarah mengikat semuanya jadi satu. Sejarah adalah lem yang merekatkan semuanya agar menjadi utuh. Smeuanya! Sejarah menciptakan peradaban yang beradab. Dan kita menyelamatkan sejarah. Kita, penjaga sejarah.” (hlm 151)

Point Zero dibangun di monument Gunung Saint Michell yang ada di pesisir Prancis pada tahun 1820. Jadi, markas pusat para penjaga sejarah ini tidak hanya didirikan di suatu tempat, tapi juga di suatu waktu (karena mereka adalah para agen penjelajah waktu itu sendiri). Tahun1820 dipilih karena masa itu merupakan masa peralihan dari dua rentang masa kekacauan di Eropa, sebuah masa tenang di antara dua masa yang penuh hiruk pikuk perang dan perkembangan Revolusi Industri. Jadi, para agen ini tinggal dan beroperasi di Kastil Gunung St. Michell dari tahun 1820, dan ketika waktu telah berjalan mendekati tahun 1830, semua agen akan bersama-sama melompati waktu dan kembali ke tahun 1820. Demikian seterusnya. Setiap masa memiliki agen penghubungnya sendiri, yang akan melacak dan memandu para agen penjaga sejarah yang dikirimkan ke masa tersebut ketika terjadi semacam kekacauan sejarah. Unik kan?

Cara melakukan perjalanan waktu di buku ini juga unik, lebih tepatnya sih ribet. Jika di kisah-kisah time travelling lain biasanya menggunakan portal waktu atau lubang cacing, maka di buku ini cara berpindah melompati waktu adalah dengan meminum semacam cairan khusus yang berisikan ‘sejarah’. Bagaimana ceritanya linimasa sejarah yang sedemikian panjang itu disimpan dalam saripati minuman? Biarlah penulis sendiri yang akan menjelaskannya di buku ini. Saya bisa memahami logika perjalanan waktu ini saat membacanya, tapi kalau harus menjelaskan bagaimana meminum cairan dan meluncur ke masa lampau melewati titik-titik horizon, biarlah penulis yang menjelaskan. Jadi, setelah meminum cairan tertentu, para penjaga sejarah harus menuju titik-titik horizon yang ada di tengah laut gengan kapal khusus untuk kemudian melompat ke masa lalu. Sederhananya seperti itu. Saya masih bingung, bagaimana si kapal—yang notabene tidak ikut minum cairan—bisa ikut berpindah ke masa lampau.

Kembali ke Jake yang kemudian sudah dibawa ke Point Zero di tahun 1820. Untuk mengetahui apa yang sebenarnya terjadi kepada kedua orang tuanya, tiga agen—yang baru saja dikenal Jake—dikirim ke Venesia pada tahun 1506. Pada masa itulah keduanya dilaporkan menghilang setelah sebelumnya mengirimkan pesan “KODE UNGU” alias keadaan gawat ke markas pusat. Para musuh tengah menyiapkan sesuatu yang konon akan mengubah jalannya sejarah dunia di Venesia tahun 1506 dan ketiga agen itu harus mencegah para penjahat sekaligus mengetahui apa yang terjadi pada kedua orang tua Jake. Merasa bahwa dirinya harus ikut ambil bagian, diam-diam Jake menyelinap ke kapal misi dan akhirnya terpaksa mengikuti misi ke tahun 1506 yang sekaligus menjadi awal dari petualangannya sebagai seorang agen penjaga sejarah.

“Kalau kau mau pendidikan, dunia ini adalah tempat di mana kau akan menemukannya.” (hlm 30)

Menulis sebuah kisah tentang time travelling bisa dibilang cukup sulit mengingat banyaknya potensi lubang jebakan dan bolong logika yang sering muncul ketika penulisnya tidak teliti.Perjalanan waktu sendiri masih menjadi sesuatu yang kontroversial di kalangan ilmuwan. Jika kita mengubah masa lalu, apakah perubahan sebuah peristiwa di masa lalu benar-benar mengubah kondisi masa sekarang? Misalnya: seandainya si penjelajah waktu bisa mencegah Amerika Serikat agar tidak menjatuhkan bom abom ke Hiroshima dan Nagasaki pada tahun 1945, apakah Indonesia masih dijajah Jepang sampai sekarang, ataukah Indonesia masih sama seperti saat ini? Begitu juga di buku ini, banyak sekali lubang-lubang logika terkait perjalanan waktu yang muncul, belum lagi berbagai fakta sejarah yang sepertinya bertimpukan satu sama lain. Misalnya saja, benarkah masa sekarang yang sekarang ini memang masa sekarang yang benar dan bukan masa sekarang yang salah? Bingung kan? Sama dong, hahaha.

"Sejarah memang menakjubkan …. Seperti halnya bintang. Makin kau lihat, makin banyak yang kau temukan.” (hlm 259)

Tapi, sebuah karya yang bagus harus mampu membekap mulut usil si pembaca dengan cara mengalihkan perhatian si pembaca, yakni dengan alur yang seru. Buku ini membuktikannya, saya tidak terlalu rewel saat membacanya karena sibuk larut dalam petualangan Jake dan kawan-kawannya melompati waktu ke tahun 1502. Saya terpesona dengan setting era Renaissance yang tergambar indah di buku ini, juga bangunan-bangunan kastil di Eropa dengan pengunungan Alpen bersaljunya. Ceritanya sendiri bergerak cepat, membikin penasaran, dan sarat akan aksi (meskipun aksi di bab-bab terakhir membuat saya mulai bawel karena transformasi Jake Djones yang terlalu mendadak dari remaja biasa menjadi agen istimewa). Terselip juga banyak pengetahuan baru tentang sejarah Abad Pertengahan Eropa di buku ini. Saya tidak sabar membaca petualangan Jake dan para agen penjaga sejarah lainnya ketika mereka melompat ke masa-masa sebelum Masehi. Pasti seru sekali.

A Foreword.

I was going to write this review as soon as I had finished the book, as I should really do for every book I read and review, but I held out because well, I got busy for one and two because I knew that I would be going with Damian Dibben on one of his days on his book tour. (more on this to appear tomorrow) I am now sitting here writing this review thankful that I waited because I feel that my review would have been incomplete if I had posted it before. The day I spent talking with, listening and watching Damian has fuelled a lot of this review, and so has a lot of the feedback that I heard. While how I felt about this book, and the words of this review, are completely my own, the last paragraph will be full of how other people found his book (from my memory because I didn't record it). I hope that this will help to give a bigger and better picture of The History Keepers: The Storm Begins for you all.

An interesting concept that was really compelling.
In all honesty, I was hooked on this book from just the synopsis but I feel I should make a note here about why. I did not like studying history in school, not because I found it boring but because I found it difficult. Remembering all the different dates, names, and events just wasn't something that came naturally to me but I was still fascinated by the subject. (Film history in my first year of uni is still one of my favourite subjects). I love the idea of what went on before us. I love historical films and plays but I have never really found a history book that really grabbed at me. Then I read this synopsis and I knew that it sounded like the perfect book to me. Time travelling is definitely an intriguing concept in itself but the way that Damian portrays it within this book was astounding, creative and truly captured my attention. With the synopsis bringing me in to the story, the story itself spoke volumes within me. It was fast-paced, action-packed and so compelling that I found it extremely hard to actually put it down.

Jake Djones is your ordinary fourteen year old boy, until he learns that his parents are missing but not just in modern day, but somewhere, anywhere, in history. They work for an organisation called The History Keepers who travel through time to keep history the same as it has always been known. Jake is quickly thrust into a world that he struggles to comprehend but a very curious nature, a strong, protective and passion filled heart compel him to surge forward and go above and beyond what is expected of him to save his parents. I loved Jake. I liked how he didn't listen to orders and did what he felt was right, I loved that he followed his heart, that he was smarter than he gave himself credit for and I just enjoyed the journey that he took himself on. Nothing that happened was because someone ordered him to do it, but more because he was ordered specifically not to. He took control of the situation and I loved that about him.

Coming in second.
I also adored all of the secondary characters. Topaz was mysterious and alluring and I wanted to know more about her. I loved Charlie and his parrot and his intellectual nature but my favourite young agent was definitely Nathan. A boy so obsessed with fashion, he worries about it even when they're in the middle of danger. He was the comedic relief throughout the novel and I very much enjoyed laughing at the jokes he provided throughout the story. I also really loved how he automatically switched to being in charge, of taking everything on his shoulders when it was needed. He may have been light-hearted most of the time, but when it mattered, he had the ability to behave in the best way. It really made his character better. I also adored Jake's aunt, Rose. She had an energetic, lively nature and had a warm-filled heart too. Jupitus Cole was mysterious and a character you felt you needed to be weary off and I loved that about him. It made me want to know more about him. Jake's parents were both great too and I just wished we could have spent more time with them - but I have a feeling we might in the upcoming novels! I honestly cannot wait to read more about this characters and the next journey's that they set off on. I also felt that the age range between the different characters really helped to make this book more universal, I could imagine adults and children alike truly enjoying this story.

The story itself was so brilliant. There was never a truly dull moment, the pace always seeming just right and keeping the reader intrigued while still filling in all the basic background information that was needed. I loved where the agents ended up, I loved the journey that they took, the twists and turns that they had to deal with and just the character and relationship development that occurred throughout the novel. I also thoroughly enjoyed the counter-balance between action and comedy and how well it was dealt with within the story. But really, the best thing about this novel is the concept of time travel and how it happens. The way that anything that happens in the past will still affect the future as they know it, how they age at the same pace no matter what era they're in and that everything happens as they've heard about it in the history books. While Topaz, Jake, Charlie and Nathan were all born centuries apart, they're still all roughly the same age - a unique and creative concept that I just truly enjoyed. I am incredibly excited to see where they will all head to next - or rather, what will happen to them on their next adventure.

The Children's Perspective
As promised, this last paragraph will be a quick look at how readers of the target age for this book found the book. It was told that it is a book that has a great, hooking beginning and really grabs the reader into wanting to know more. It was fast-paced, thrilling and exciting and they all just wanted to know what was going to happen next. They loved the variety of characters and everyone had their own favourites. It was also noted that the ending was done well as it left the reader with just enough to keep them sated but left a lot of things up in the air, allowing the trail of mystery to make them eagerly await the next book. In honesty, their feedback was amazing and outstanding and it really opened the book up to me in a way that I hadn't seen it before and I know that it is a book, and series, that many will grow to love and adore.

Finishing Up
All in all this book is a great adventure book that is full of action and comedy, suspense and mystery and really manages to grab the reader. It is never dull or boring, always spurring the action onwards at a fast and captivating pace. It is a book that I would easily be able to read over and over again and would recommend (if I haven't already) to many people, if not everyone. It is universal in its themes and its address, and I truly believe that children and adults can fall in love with this story. While reading it, I was often reminded of J.K. Rowling and the way she writes and the journey's that her characters take (especially the first few books) and I find that the magic and mystery in The History Keepers is just as imaginative and creative too. This is a book that you definitely don't want to miss out on reading.

Trigger warnings: death, murder, loss of a parent, death of a sibling (in the past), snakes?

I don't really know why I keep reading YA time travel books. They're almost universally disappointing. And this one was...oof. Honestly, it's more middle grade than YA. The writing is incredibly simplistic, there's almost no character development, and the whole thing is so riddled with historical inaccuracies that it's almost intolerable.

There's this whole weird set up where time travel relies on people having shapes floating around in their eyes?? And if you have diamonds, then you're the most powerful time travellers? And then you sail on a ship out to the middle of the ocean, take some gross tasting potion, and BOOM TIME TRAVEL?? The whole thing is very poorly explained, as is the impetus for why people travel in time. It's basically "We need to save history". Right, but FROM WHAT? Surely it can't ALWAYS need saving from the evil moustache twirling villain??

Anyway. My biggest pet peeves with this one were a) that it's 1506 and people get served hot chocolate when cocoa beans didn't even arrive in Europe until the 1530s, and b) that there's an underground labyrinth that's pitch black and yet filled with snakes. Uh, excuse me, sir? DO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW REPTILES WORK BECAUSE THIS IS NOT IT.

This was very clearly a book aimed at 12-15 year olds, which I am not, but I generally enjoy a good time travelling adventure so gave it a go.

It was not for me, in this case, and there were a few moments that made me cringe or roll my eyes that I'm pretty sure my 15 year old self might have agreed with.

That being said, it was a decent book. It just wasn't great, and I personally felt it missed the mark.

A really fun read for children aged 10-13+. It has time travel, adventure, funny characters, mystery, near death experiences, a colourful parrot and the mmc crushing on a girl who he finds hot.

Only slight criticism is that the books seemed to be coming to an end but then more stuff happens. This happened quite a few times and it made the ending drag a bit.

But really fun, think lots of kids would love this one.

Zur Handlung:
Jake Djones glaubte ein normaler Junge zu sein, mit Eltern die nicht einmal ihr Geschäft für Badezimmereinrichtungen richtig leiten konnten. Bis zu dem Tag, als ihm eine ganz neue Möglichkeit offen gelegt wird. Er hat die Fähigkeit durch die Zeit zu reisen, was in seiner Familie dann auch noch weit verbreitet ist.
Auf dem Weg in ein neues Leben voller Abenteuer, kommt er demjenigen auf die Spur, der für das Verschwinden seiner Eltern und vor Jahren auch das seines Bruders verantwortlich gewesen sein könnte.
In Begleitung von neuen Freunden stellt sich Jake der Herausforderung seines Lebens.

Zur Gestaltung:
Der Umschlag selbst ist schon sehr schön. Man findet dieses Symbol mit der Sanduhr im Roman wieder, außerdem fühlt es sich total toll an. Wenn man genauer hinsieht merkt man, dass nicht nur Jake auf dem Cover abgebildet ist, sondern auch die Insel mit der Geheimbasis der Geschichtshüter.
Auch auf der Rückseite findet sich ein Bild zur Geschichte, dort sieht man Jake mit seinen neuen Freunden.
Ich finde man kann sich alles noch viel viel besser vorstellen.

Als ich den Umschlag abmachte, bemerkte ich dann noch, dass das Buch eine Art Maserung, wie bei Holz, hat. Man muss das Buch nur "ins richtige Licht rücken". Der Buchrücken (ohne Umschlag) gibt dem Ganzen etwas Altes. Denn diese Art Autor und Titel auf dem Buchrücken zu zeigen erinnert an die alten Schinken von früher.

Meine Meinung:
Ich glaube, dass war mein erstes Buch über Zeitreisen o.o Auf jeden Fall war ich sehr neugierig darauf und habe mich sehr gefreut, als ich es lesen durfte.
Ich wusste allerdings überhaupt nicht was auf mich zukommt und wahr total spannend.

Die Figuren dieser Geschichte haben wirklich Charakter. Die Einen sind einem mehr sympathisch, die Anderen eher weniger. Gerade die Eigenheiten der Figuren bringen eine besondere Atmosphäre hervor. An so vielen Stellen brachten sie mich zum Lachen.
Diese Geschichte hat allerdings so viele Figuren, dass ich nur auf die eingehen werde, wo ich besonderen Lob oder Kritik zu äußern habe:
Nathan ist ein Charakter, der mir viel Spaß bereitet hatte. Manchmal hatte ich allerdings das Gefühl, dass seine Arroganz und Selbstverliebtheit etwas zu viel werden könnte. Bislang hat sich das ganz gut gehalten und recht lustige Situationen hervorgebracht.
Bei Topaz muss ich leider sehr bemängeln, dass ihre ach so übernatürliche Schönheit von Jake so in den Himmel gelobt wird. Ihre Herkunft macht es dann aber sogar wieder wett.
Besonders haben mir Charlie und sein Papagei gefallen. Die 2 waren einfach der Wahnsinn. Charlie konnte nicht nur mit Intellekt, sondern auch mit tollen Sprüchen zum richtigen Moment punkten. Papageien mag ich so oder so. Intelligente und tolle Vögel.

Der Autor beweist einen ausgewogenen Humor und Ideenreichtum mit dem Umgang der Zeitreisen. Im Laufe der Geschichte lernt der Leser mit Jake was es mit den Zeitreisen so auf sich hat und wieso diese gemacht werden. Es werden Möglichkeiten und Gefahren aufgezeigt. Besonders kreativ fand ich, wie die "Basis" der Geschichtshüter beschrieben wurde und worauf der Autor alles geachtet hatte. Sogar die Kommunikation durch die Zeit ist möglich gemacht worden.
Seine Art zu schreiben hat mir ebenfalls sehr gefallen. Der Schreibstil half dem Leser gut durch das Buch durchzugleiten. Die Handlungen waren realistisch dargestellt und nachvollziehbar. Außerdem wirkte alles besonders lebhaft.

Fazit:
Das Buch ist auf jeden Fall sehr gut gelungen. Es hat mich fasziniert. Der Humor des Autors trifft total meinen Geschmack und Spannung ist ebenfalls zu finden.
Ich bin richtig neugierig auf die Fortsetzung!

La storia non è qualcosa di fermo e immutabile, non è qualcosa che ormai è
accaduto e non può più cambiare. La storia è in continuo movimento, in continua
mutazione e soprattutto la storia è sempre in pericolo e minacciata da eventi
che rischiano di cambiare il presente e il futuro in modo irrimediabile.
Jake è una ragazzino di 14 anni che in un pomeriggio piovoso della umida
Londra viene rapito da un'organizzazione segreta: i custodi della storia. Salvo
lo shock iniziale, Jake si fa forza e decide di buttarsi in quest'avventura per salvare i genitori che, a quanto pare, non solo sono scomparsi ma sono tra i migliori agenti di questa organizzazione. Così tra navi stupende, personaggi d'altri tempi, strani congegni per comunicare, Jake si trova nella Venezia del 1600 a dover affrontare pericoli per cui non è assolutamente preparato.
Ma conosciamo i personaggi, i quali sono tutti ben caratterizzati e descritti
in modo tale che il lettore possa immaginarli senza discostarsi troppo
dall'idea che ne ha avuto l'autore. Jake è un ragazzino estremamente curioso,
affascinato dalla storia e pronto al pericolo e all'avventura, disposto a tutto
pur di aiutare gli amici e i più deboli. Abbiamo poi la bellissima Topazia,
nata durante la guerra dei Cent'anni: una ragazzina quindicenne tutta
responsabilità e doveri che nasconde un oscuro e difficile passato. Infine
Nathan: bello tanto quanto vanitoso, ma eroico e altruista, pronto a
sdrammatizzare con le sue battute anche i momenti più critici. E poi ci sono i
personaggi minori, che in realtà si apprestano a diventare, a mio avviso, di
rilievo: c'è la storia tra Jupitus Cole, responsabile dell'ufficio di Londra e
Rose, la zia di Jake, abbiamo poi la presuntuosa Oceane, e ovviamente il
cattivo dei cattivi: il principe Zeldt che vuole distruggere la società del
600, ma anche quella moderna evitando l'avvento del Rinascimento e creando una
distopia basata sulla legge del più forte, e più ricco.
I custodi della storia è stata una piacevole sorpresa, forse dedicato a
lettori un pò più piccoli, ma mi sono comunque ritrovata a leggerlo tutto d'un
fiato finendolo in pochissimi giorni.
Damian Dibben è un artista della storia: descrizioni particolareggiate di
luoghi, abiti e usanze del tempo, uno stile impeccabile, colpi di scena non
eccessivi rendono questo libro un piccolo capolavoro.
Perciò io ve lo consiglio proprio.

To say it with the words of Marcel Reich-Ranicki: "Dies ist ein ärgerliches Buch!" (this is an annoying book). The concept of time travel and the writing style aren't bad, but if you are writing about time travel - please - research your details well.

There are *so* many anachronisms that I simply mention just a few, galloping with the same horses for example from north of Mannheim until the top of an Alpine pass within a few hours or travelling from north of Mannheim until Venice with covered wagons within three and a half days - yeah, totally likely, especially in 1506. Three teenagers of different gender, aged 14 and 15, staying over night in *one* sleeping room in a tavern, the same teenagers costuming up for a married couple and their coachman and adults seeing them as adults - no matter that teenagers from today wouldn't have a chance to be taken as adults back then as they look far too young, even with an artifical beard. Women wearing corsets, couples travelling with their children like today, cold and especially hot water from a tab and so on and so forth.

This now combined with people acting all James Bond like, just without the James Bond wink, and woodcut cliché characters without any development - the only reason I give it two instead of one star is the comparison to the first Eragon book, which was on the same level. Well, I'll see if the second book gets better or worse.

I feel a little guilty reviewing this so poorly when I am really not the target audience, and had I been an 11 year old boy I might have really enjoyed it. But I'm not sure that's quite justification for the lazy writing, sloppy characters, unoriginal plot and half-assed world building.

The logic in the rules of time travel were deeply flawed, inconsistent and poorly expressed. The characters were unbelievable caricatures relying on stereotypes. There was no attempt made to be remotely historically plausible. For example the evil character gathered self-made medieval millionaires including bankers and insurance brokers, carrying chests of medieval bank notes in the early 1500s. And the whole book was wildly sexist, with all female characters being weirdly sexualised, and the main characters heroic deeds included trying to save a female character, despite her repeatedly telling him to leave her alone, she wasn't in danger, she was on a job. But some how it's still heroic to ignore her and try to be a hero anyway.

The whole thing reads like it was written by a slightly horny teenage boy who watches a lot of doctor who.

Children truly deserve better.

Jake hrs mencari orangtuanya yg hilang. Tanpa disadarinya hal ini mendorongnya ke tempat organisasi yg menamakan diri mereka HISTORY KEEPERS. Jake mulai berkenalan dgn kawan² barunya yg sebaya spt Topaz yg cantik dan berani, Nathan yg narsis, Charlie yg informatif dan Paolo yg penakut.

Jake dan teman²nya mendapatkan misi utk mencari orangtua Jake di awal abad 17. Mereka terdampar di Jerman, tempat si pembelot pangeran kegelapan Zelt berada, yg bertekad utk mengubah sejarah Eropa utk selamanya menjadi Abad Kegelapan dgn menyebarkan wabah mematikan. Berhasilkah Jake dkk menggagalkan usaha jahat Zeldt tsb?

Saya jarang membaca genre YA fantasy tetapi novel ini termasuk yg jarang saya bilang bagus. Kalau dibandingkan dgn City of Bones sbg novel pertama YA fantasy yg saya baca, saya lebih memilih novel yg ini ketimbang COB. Krn COB bertele-tele sedangkan novel ini jauh lebih ringkas dan lebih menohok langsung ke tujuan. Lebih penuh petualangan juga. Semua gambaran ttg abad 17 dideskripsikan dgn super menakjubkan (mungkin agak berlebihan juga, ya anggap saja lagi nonton film). Karakter penokohan juga kuat walaupun saya kurang sreg dgn karakter Jake, tetapi karakter ini realistis dan manusiawi, sbg newcomer hero yg masih cupu, serba kagok dan sering melakukan kesalahan nyaris fatal. Paling tidak Jake sudah digembleng dgn pengalaman di novel ini.

Jadi penasaran dgn buku lanjutannya. Semoga lebih baik drpd novel perdana ini.

Overall, an interesting plot that is somewhat engaging. Character development could be ramped up however-- I felt like I didn't really know any of the characters by the end of the book. Three and a half stars.

"I custodi della storia" è il romanzo fantasy young adult nato dalla penna del londinese Damian Dibben, pubblicato lo scorso 17 maggio dalla Casa Editrice Corbaccio, che ha colpito tutti gli editori a livello internazionale ed è in via di pubblicazione in 30 paesi.

Se cercate un fantasy avventuroso che non vi dia un attimo di tregua, se siete appassionati di storia e colpiti dai viaggi nel tempo, questo è il romanzo che fa per voi.

Non siete ancora convinti? Aprite il libro alla prima pagina e scorrete con gli occhi i primi capoversi; ve ne innamorerete. Basterà davvero poco per entrare subito nel vivo della situazione, restare affascinati dallo stile descrittivo dell'autore e farsi conquistare dal ritmo incalzante della trama. Non riuscirete a dire addio a quelle pagine, ve lo assicuro.
Ecco perché ho amato questo romanzo. È una lettura che scorre veloce e coinvolge.
Aggiungo che le descrizioni sono fatte per far assaporare ad ognuno di noi quanto si è studiato sui libri di storia. I protagonisti inoltre, sono unici.

Londra, giorni nostri. Un ragazzino di quattordici anni, in una notte tempestosa vedrà rivoluzionare la sua vita e scoprire che i suoi genitori non sono semplici venditori di articoli sanitari, ma veri e propri custodi della storia, purtroppo scomparsi in un'epoca lontana...
Jake Djones, un ragazzo propenso all'avventura. Un protagonista che non si lascerà scappare l'occasione di movimentare le pagine di quest'avventura senza sosta. Un adolescente in cui è facile identificarsi. Io personalmente, come Jake, mi sono fermata milioni di volte a fantasticare di fronte ad un dipinto che raffiguri epoche passate... Con la fantasia è facilissimo viaggiare. È bellissimo immaginarci catapultati nel passato. Jake, insieme agli altri personaggi di questo romanzo, grazie alla sua abilità innata di vedere rombi, potrà farlo davvero. E ancora una volta, io con la mia fantasia, l'ho seguito volentieri alla ricerca dei suoi genitori scomparsi nella storia.

«La storia che tiene insieme il mondo. È la colla che mantiene intatta ogni cosa. Conserva la civiltà. E noi conserviamo la storia, noi, i suoi custodi.
Lo facciamo veramente, non sono solo chiacchiere. Siamo vitali».

Si passerà dalla Normandia del 1820 per arrivare alla Venezia del 1506.

Impareremo che il posto migliore dove farsi un'istruzione è il mondo.

I personaggi che affiancheranno il nostro beniamino in queste pagine sono tutti ben caratterizzati per le loro peculiarità e grazie alla penna dell'autore sarà facilissimo farvi una raffigurazione visiva degli stessi. Charlie, rappresenta il classico stereotipo dello scienziato pazzo, seppur ancora ragazzino, pronto a risolvere qualsiasi problema che riguardi la fisica, la chimica e la matematica, senza mai togliere attenzione all'inseparabile amico pappagallo Mr Drake. Topazia, la bellissima ragazza dai lunghi boccoli biondi e dagli occhioni blu sicura di sè e pronta ad infrangere tanti cuori. Nathan (ammetto, il mio preferito) il più originale di tutti: sarcastico, pungente, a volte arrogante e pieno di sé, ma sicuramente indimenticabile. Vi regalerà le battute più esilaranti. «La sua mancanza di sensibilità rivaleggia con la sua vanità».
E poi ancora Paolo, Oceane, Norland, Jupitus, la zia Rose, Galliana, ... Una bella combricola che vi farà trascorrere in sua compagnia ore piacevolissime.

E come in tutte le avventure che si rispettino, non manca il "cattivo" della situazione: il principe Zeldt con tutta la schiera dei suoi seguaci dell'Esercito nero. E nemmeno l'autore si è dimenticato di inserire la figura di un traditore...

Ammetto che lo sviluppo della trama sia semplice e lineare, ma trovo che possa essere apprezzato sia dai più giovani lettori che troveranno in questo libro molta avventura, a discapito della classica ed ormai scontata storia d'amore, che dai più grandi, proprio perché non cade nelle banalità che offrono altri romanzi dello stesso genere.

Sarebbe fantastico poter viaggiare veramente nella storia! Crociate, Alto Medioevo, Rinascimento, Illuminismo, Rivoluzione industriale... non avete mai pensato come sarebbe stata la vostra vita se foste nati in quell'epoca?
Il passato è affascinante soprattutto per chi crede che la modernità di oggi abbia agevolato la vita, ma fatto dimenticare tanti gesti e valori del passato...

che le cose sarebbero potute andare milioni di volte peggio»

Due faccende restano ancora in sospeso. Il fratello Philip è veramente morto, o anch'esso prigioniero in qualche angolo della storia? e Topazia, quale triste segreto nasconde la sua famiglia? Sarà persa per sempre ormai?

Tra follia e realtà non potrete non viaggiare con la fantasia e compiere voli pindarici seguendo questi fantastici amici.
Un romanzo consigliato soprattutto ai più giovani, magari come lettura rilassante per la pausa estiva, ma anche a chi ancora ama viaggiare nella storia e tornare ragazzo...

I think I would have enjoyed this much more as a movie. I liked the general idea for the story and most of the characters (sorry, but Paolo was just a bit over the top) but the writing was not for me (this was not because I read a translation). I want to know how the story ends but will look it up online...

It was okay, i didn't love it nor did I not like it. I will not continue this series right away even though I have the next to books.
