When Brendan Delaney answered an ad for an artist's model, he was looking for an easy way to earn some extra cash. But Morgan Roan wanted more than just a model. Soon, Brendan finds himself caught in a web of deception and desire, lust and betrayal—her captive muse. What price pleasure?
I really enjoyed this very short story. I would love more from this world that was built in such few pages. I feel like there is certainly more to the story.
Francesca has a talent. In a world where Zombies are starting to take over, people who want to capitalize on their talent have to take risks. This is how Francesca ends up navigating her pregnant girlfriend Gillian to the house of her musical director. The musical director also happens to be Gillian’s lover but that is another thing that Francesca is willing to overlook for fame. Of course, when they get to the musical directors house they don’t seem to be the only ones there…..
This is an uber short story, so this will be an uber short review. I really enjoyed the world that this author created. I particularly liked that this Zombie populated world was the norm for our characters, that they were part of a plan to repopulate the Earth. I would have liked to know more, but all of this was just a scene setter for the dastardly plan by the evil ex. She wanted Francesca to get into the correct “head-space” for the song that she was singing and was willing to do anything to get her there. I did like Gillian but Francesca slightly annoyed me. I think that I ran out of patience with her quest for fame when the dog got eaten…. Yeah, I blamed Francesca for that one ‘cos that dog had no business being out in a Zombie apocalypse. Anything that happened to her after that one was her own fault for being so fame-hungry.
If I had anything to complain about it was that I felt there was too much going on in such a short book. I enjoyed the writing and world building so much that I could happily read a full length from this author. I don’t normally say this with novella’s, but I think the length actually made me enjoy this one less due to the limited amount of emotional detail around the situations that occur. I just couldn’t shake the notion that some of these really traumatic events needed more emotional fallout.
Overall a sexy brief read from an author I will quite happily read more from. I liked this Zombie world….’twas fun :D
Her Captive Muse has an intriguing title and a strong cover both of which had me desperately searching for a quiet few hours to devour the actual book.
Once I started this wonderfully written story it quickly becomes clear that sexual attraction doesn’t get much darker or more dangerous than the situation Brendan Delaney finds himself in. He likes being looked after, he likes sex- a lot and he really ‘loves’ white powder. In a headlong fall into lust his addiction quickly extends to the dazzling artist, Morgan Roan; he just can’t seem to get enough of her whether she is being ‘sweet as pie’ or dominant and secretive.
As a reader I was constantly trying to second guess the plot (I love it when that happens), Morgan’s intentions in particular had me itching for answers– sometimes I got her right sometimes I didn’t. Brilliant. My heart strings were continually pulled by Brendan because Ms Skye has a wonderful knack of showing her protagonists decision making processes as logical even though they’re not choices I would have made. The sex was spicy and kinky, great if you like bondage and pain with your literature. Brendan laps it all up though there are times when you’re curious as to how much he is enjoying it and how much he is wondering what the hell he is doing - again, a twist in the characters conscious which keeps you hanging on for more.
Verdict: The best way to describe my emotions while reading this book is ‘captivated’. Brendon is a wonderful character who you can’t help but love as much as you want to shake him. I won’t give away the end but suffice to say I will be hunting out more books by this very talented author.
An exquisitely written paranormal romance short story I received a free copy from the author in return for an honest review. All opinions are my own, and I was not paid for my review. I was highly impressed and very entertained by this short story. Evidently, Serenity Woods is not just an excellent contemporary romance writer; she is just as adept at writing paranormal romance. This story was set up so well that I very quickly knew the characters' magical powers, how the powers worked, and the important facts about the paranormal world. Then I quickly fell in love with the two characters as their situation unfolded. Imogen and Hawke are immediately likeable, and I was entranced by their story. It is amazing how such a complete, self-contained story was perfectly packed into these pages. If you think you don't like short-story-length romances, you have to try this one! It is like a intricate origami sculpture that fits in the palm of your hand, perfect in every way.
Her Captive Muse is an intensely dark look into the minds of two addicts. Morgan and Brendan's story was so sinfully twisted, I had to keep reading to see how these two would end up! I loved how the author captured the manic, wild, and completely crazy side of two lovers drawn to one another for all the wrong reasons. I must admit, I prefer my heroes alpha 100%, and there were times I wanted Brendan to get his comeuppance for his shear stupidity where Morgan is concerned. He can't help himself, he's drawn to her conditional love in the same way he's addicted to drugs and Morgan uses this to her advantage. This is not a tale for the hopeless romantic...you must be ready to finish this bumpy erotic ride until the bittersweet end.
This is a hard-hitting erotic story that may not be for everyone and is not really a romance but a sexual suspense. There is not one truly empathetic character in the book, with the evil evangelical relative thrown in for good measure. Sex scenes are hot enough to steam up the reader and well written. The dialogue is as gritty as the plot and gives the book a noir essence. The action is very fast paced, and I had to read the story from cover to cover just to see what weird thing would happen next, and it was never what I expected. I love stories that can do that. I found the ending a bit convenient unfortunately, but the rest of the book was chilling.
I really enjoyed this book! Midnight Melody by Kate Devlin is my favorite from the Lesbians Vs Zombies series. So far, anyway. :-) Even if Lesbian romance isn't your "thing," you will still enjoy reading about Gillian and Francesca. Especially if you like stories that are a little psychologically intense. This book is well written, and the characters will live inside your mind long after you're finished reading their tale. The zombie theme is gruesome, as it should be, and there's a really wild BDSM scene, so if you're squeamish, you might not want to pick this one. Otherwise, I highly recommend this story to anyone who likes paranormal romance and who is looking for a really good book. :-) A keeper, definitely.

Indigo Skye wrote a very alpha heroine. She is a moody artist and in Brendan's words "She looked like a lioness, hot on the scent of a particularly tasty zebra." But there are drug usage and bondage sex as it is a glimpse into the dark recesses of two addicts minds. For me it was an interesting erotic read.
A short and reasonably enjoyable read, although not entirely my type of book in general. I actually thought the worldbuilding and magic in it was very interesting, moreso than the actual plot. The main characters were fun, and the sex scenes had nice "neither cheesy nor overly explicit" heat levels though there was a bit of greyness in terms of consent in a spot or two (nothing actually non-consensual, just some attitudes I don't really like) which always makes me enjoy things a bit less.
I never thought i'd ever have to give out a 1-star rating. I usually pick my preferred books very carefully. Guess there's always a first time. My first ever lemon pick. I can't believe this book's average rating is 4.2. Seriously?
I don't usually read short stories, bout this one is by SERENITY WOODS!!! So of course I loved it. It made all the points of a novel and was very satisfying. Thanks again, Serenity.
Well written, pretty good flow. Great story line and loved the background story within the main that kept me interested and helped develop depth for the main characters. Overall good read.
