Find the Facts with BBC Fact Finders

A thousand years ago an Irish monk wrote about "fierce strangers" who brought terror to the coasts of Europe in their dragon-headed war ships.

Who were these fierce strangers who came to invade Britain?
Where did they come from? What did they believe in?
What was their home-life like? Why were they buried in their ships?
All the answers can be found in this book which gives us an insight into life in Viking Britain all those years ago . . .

The book uses the viewpoint of an eight-year-old tenth-century Viking girl to present information about her village, the homes, families, clothing, food, gods, and customs. Includes activities and projects.

I found this useful book in my school library. It is from the BBC Fact Finders series. They also have other books available on the Anglo-Saxons and Romans. This book was published in 1995 so check online for second-hand copies or with your local library if you want to read it.

The Vikings were such interesting people and we learned about them at school in Year 3/4. I have read a few non-fiction and fiction texts about Vikings so would say this is quite a good book. The text is simply written for 8-11 year olds. There are plenty of pictures, photographs and maps to help you explore the subject.

The book covers lots of topic areas such as: ships and exploring, warriors and battles. There is also information on Viking homes, farming, art, clothing, religion and runes. I enjoyed the section about the Vikings who lived in York during the 860s A.D. We have visited York quite a few times so it was good to learn more about the town in those times.

This is a handy book to borrow if you want the basic facts but you might want to look at more recent texts if you are going to purchase something.
