Young Charles Russell wanted to be a cowboy, so just two weeks shy of his sixteenth birthday, the determined Charlie boarded a train heading to the frontier. There, in 1880, in the land of buffalo, Indians, and open prairie, Charlie found his home. And there he became a painter-but not just any painter. Today Charles M. Russell is considered one of the greatest artists of the American West and one who opened its door to so many.
I love getting to the end of a book and finding out that it is based on a true story! After reading this colorfully illustrated book, we looked up the paintings done by Charles M. Russell. They are beautiful!
I'd never heard of this painter before. I loved that he was a cowboy first and foremost and that he used it to capture that way of life as it started to become less necessary.
Charlie wanted to be a cowboy all his life. Even when little, he made western animals out of wax and drew western scenes until he could travel west. Then, even as a cowboy, he never stopped creating!
This was a great story about the great American painter Charlie Russell. I love books like this that we can use to teach children about the life and background of an artist. A great read!
