"Gods ..." he whispered, his hand shifting to the back of her head. "If you knew how much I want you, you would be running from me in terror."
We met powerful vampire Styx in the previous book as the leader of the lethal Ravens, the guardians of the Anasso who is the leader of the vampires. And after the death of the previous Anasso the title was passed onto Styx, who is ruthless in his determination to protect his people. And currently his biggest problem is the Weres who has left their assigned hunting grounds and come to Chicago for unknown reasons. Reasons Styx is determined to find out, even if he has to kidnap an innocent woman to use as leverage. But being near Darcy threatens to derail all of Styx’s plans.
After a childhood of foster homes and being seen as different, as a freak, Darcy Smith is used to being alone. And when she’s kidnapped by a man who looks like an Aztec god, and who claims to be a vampire, Darcy is determined to escape. But when Styx proves to her that he’s not human, Darcy is relieved and curious to find someone who is different, just like her. But no matter how intense her attraction to Styx is, she knows she can’t trust him when his people will always come first for him.
But the reason for why the king of Weres is so desperate to find Darcy threatens that which has become to mean everything to Styx - Darcy who has become his obsession, his salvation.
By the gods, he was the master of all vampires. Demons around the world quaked at the mention of his name. There was none who would stand in his path. And yet, the slightest hint of longing from this woman had him scrambling to please her.
It was downright pathetic.
Styx was such an interesting character ever since he was introduced in the previous book. He’s quite ruthless when it comes to what is best for his people, and quite willing to risk and use anyone in order to do so. In the previous book he almost sacrificed Shay to the previous Anasso and in the beginning of this book he was prepared to use Darcy as a bargaining chip with the Weres, not caring the reason for why the Weres wanted Darcy so badly. He really didn’t seem to have a heart and it was fascinating to see the effect Darcy had on him, slowly making him realise there were some things more important that his responsibility to his race. It was so much fun seeing the powerful and arrogant Styx fall head over heels for the tiny Darcy. Styx who couldn’t understand why Viper risked everything for his mate Shay in the previous book, and who thought he was immune to falling in love. I loved how from the first moment he met her he needed to be near her, and being clueless about why he felt so intense about her. It was hilarious :-D I also loved how baffled he was with Darcy’s continued refusal of everything he said and ordered, because he’s so used to being obeyed and feared.
Even a woman who tried to think the best of everyone shouldn't be pining for the man holding her prisoner.
That was crazy. Just... crazy.
Darcy was a great heroine. So compassionate, kind and optimistic. She has always longed for a family, to have people she could love, and in the end she found it in Styx. I loved that she was the one person who understood Styx, who saw that he was not as coldhearted as everyone thought, that she understood and respected how serious he took his responsibility as the Anasso of vampires, his need to protect his people.
The truth of the matter was that his life was different when Darcy was close.
He was more than a grim guardian, or all-powerful leader of the vampires.
He was ... a man.
I loved the romance, how possessive and protective Styx was over Darcy. And the true mate bond in this series just makes it even more special. How once mated the hero is totally committed to the heroine for life, there would never be anyone else for him. And the mating tattoos that appear once the couple is mated is awesome.
Once again the secondary characters were wonderful, especially Levet, the three-foot gargoyle. The plot was great, trying to figure out why Salvatore wanted Darcy so desperately, and figuring out what Darcy really was.
This is such an excellent PNR series, and I’m totally loving it. Highly recommended.
