I wrote this review solely because I couldn't find any low-starred reviews that pointed out the reasons for the low rating--and it matters.
This is a wonderful collection of practical home experiments for all the reasons that the 5-star reviews mention: interesting, feasible, well-presented, well-organized, and relevant to the major sciences.
Unfortunately, and for some of us it's a killer, the 'scientific explanations' for the experiments are scientifically illiterate. They're often just plain wrong. I really, really object to saying things to children that are palpably incorrect. Once an idea gets embedded in a small head, it can be extremely difficult to correct later on--even if you realize you were misled.
I'll let you decide what to do about this book. One idea, especially for younger children, might be to do the experiments, but skip the 'explanations' in the book and do your own research. Maybe older children would benefit from working through exactly why the explanations are wrong. That might be quite salutary and set them up to not blindly consume every daft thing they're 'taught' by schools or the media.
