The Falling Star

“Okay, follow close behind,” she ordered as she took the lead. “If we’re careful enough, we can sneak up on it without it knowing that we are there. Just be quiet.”Together, they entered the woods. To Shelby’s horror, sneaking up on it wouldn’t work either, since every dry leaf and fallen twig and branch gave away their location. It sounded like popping corn in a kettle every step they took. “Hey,” Shelby whispered in annoyance, “stop putting the light in my eyes. It’s hard enough to see without it shinning in my eyes.” She looked over and followed his gaze.Tim looked down at the lantern at his side and shook his head. “I’m not.”Shelby saw the dimly lit lantern hanging down, although a brighter one shown in front of them. She was puzzled, because the light she kept seeing was growing brighter, almost to the point that it was blinding. She gulped and ever so slowly, she turned. “Tim,” she said, “turn off the lantern.”“Huh?” he responded.“Just do it.” By now, they were deep within the woods, farther than they had ever gone before. Except for the branches that, now and then, rubbed against each other, or an occasional creature that scurried out of their way, it was fairly quiet. Shelby hoped to hear the strange noise again, but it didn’t happen. As Tim turned off the light, a brighter glow emerged from the dense woods up ahead.Tim responded, “Will you look at that? What do you suppose it is? A fire?”“No,” Shelby answered. “We’d be smelling smoke by now.” Moments later, Shelby and her brother, Tim, encountered a cherub, Sarroe. What followed would change their lives forever. This children's book is for eight to twelve year old, boys or girls.
