Kelemen's research offers pratical long-term solutions to the most difficult problems faced by modern parents and teachers with scholarly evidence that reveals that the fad parenting tricks presented by many of today's most well-known experts may do more harm than good.
Lawrence Kelemen is the founder and current Rosh Kollel of the Center for Kehillah Development, a leadership development project devoted to the growth and wellbeing of Jewish communities worldwide. He also created the International Organization of Mussar Vaadim, a network of self-development organizations focusing on character development in more than two dozen communities in Israel and North America. He has been honored as a visiting scholar at universities and communal organizations around the world. During his decade-long tenure at Neve Yerushalayim in Jerusalem, Rabbi Kelemen influenced thousands of students. He is also the author of many journal articles and books, among them: Permission to Believe (1990) Permission to Receive (1994), and To Kindle a Soul (2001), and he is the translator of the classical text of ancient pedagogical theory, Planting and Building (1999).
This is probably the best parenting/education book I've ever read (and I've read MANY.)
Unlike other books, that give tips and tricks for particular situations, this book teaches general principles for dealing with children that allow parents and educators to deal with children of ALL ages in all situations with clear guidelines that don't leave them dependent on the "experts," but rather empower them to handle their children's needs and education with confidence in a way that REALLY works.
The one aspect that some might consider a 'drawback' is that there aren't really any quick-fixes - but those don't last long anyway.
I appreciated the sentiment of this book. It alludes to allegorical truths and purposeful parenting approaches. Is it possible to implement in today's modern society? Kudos to anyone that can. There is wisdom in this concept of planting and building the souls of our children.
