This is a light-hearted account of a Jewish kid growing up in Montreal during the Duplessis years. His account of the jerrymandering of the local political operators brings to mind some of the recent scandals that have been unearthed there (plus ca change ...) But Allan does it all in good humour -- indeed his anecdote of the "Chinaman" being presented at the polls ("vote early, vote often") is hilarious. Allan is Mordecai Richler without all that angst.
