This is supposed to be a daily prayer with meditation. I read it before mass today. The simple prayers and meditation was amazing. I wish I could have used it for a 30 day meditation, but it was what I needed at this time. I will keep it in mind for future meditations and prayer resources. It’s excellent.

For Lent, my daughter and I studied the lives of saints. When we were reading about Catherine of Siena, I came across this book at the library. I checked it out, intending to have my eleven year old read some of what Catherine said, in more or less her own words. Little did I know I would have my daughter read a few pages in the book and then I would take it up to my room and use it as a devotional for more than a month.

I'm not generally a fan of devotions. I prefer to think about scripture, examine it and ponder its implications on my own. I don't really like to be told what to do or what to think. But the format of this book is lovely. There's a short reading for the morning, one phrase to ponder throughout the day and a short reading for evening. I love the rhythm of prayer this encourages and I especially love having one idea to ponder as I go about my daily life.

If you're not a fan of traditional devotions, you might find this book enjoyable. If you aren't one to ponder and are looking for a straightforward, life application devotional, look elsewhere. This book isn't going to tell you how to live out your faith. Instead, it will encourage and strengthen your faith and perhaps help you examine it with a new lens.
