Fourteen great myths and legends from around the world receive a dramatic retelling, featuring beautiful full-color illustrations inspired by the art of each myth's country of origin, including China, India, Africa, Greece, and North America.
Born in 1944 in Lancashire, British poet and children's author Ann Pilling read English at King’s College, London, where she wrote her thesis on C.S. Lewis' fiction. She has published over thirty books for children, one of which - Henry's Leg - won The Guardian Prize for Children’s Fiction. She has two sons, six grandchildren, and currently lives in the Yorkshire Dales. Since 2003, she has concentrated on writing poetry, rather than fiction.
A collection of myths and legends from different parts of the globe including Africa, Ireland, China, and more. The stories are told in an easy to read fashion that would be suitable for a child's first foray into mythology. A parent could easily read a story a night from this collection at bedtime as the tellings are meant for a younger audience and treats the violence within them with kid gloves.I appreciated the diverse nature of the collection mixing favourites from Greek and Norse mythology with mythologies that aren't yet as widely explored in current North American pop culture. I think this book makes a great jumping off point for anyone who wants a little exposure to ancient stories.
