The bestselling mother-daughter duo offers delicious homespun summertime recipes in their new cookbook featuring cuisine from their island in Maine. From blueberries to lobsters, kitchens everywhere will now be able to enjoy the delicious food of Maine.
Between her three New York Times bestsellers and her role in the Discovery Channel's current hit series Swords , Linda Greenlaw has undoubtedly become America's best-known fisherman. In The Maine Summers Cookbook , Linda once again teams up with her mother, Martha, to welcome readers everywhere into the kitchen on their very small island.
After agonizingly long winters, summer in Maine is a magical time when fresh swordfish, shrimp, lobster, clams, blueberries, and other seasonal produce bursting with flavor fill the Greenlaws' kitchen. Linda and Martha share their favorite recipes for these blissful days. Some are tried and true family heirlooms while others are more recent twists on coastal New England cuisine-but every one captures the sensational tastes that go hand in hand with the season.
From snacks and refreshing cocktails for lingering sunsets such as Schoolhouse Shore Clam Dip and Strawberry-Mint Sparkling Lemonade to mouthwatering starters such as Grilled Crab-Stuffed Mushrooms, and from simple but elegant entrées such as Blackened Swordfish with Blueberry Chutney to indulgent desserts such as Mile-High Strawberry Pie, these delectable recipes are tailored for the home cook. And, of course, this collection wouldn't be complete without Linda and Martha's favorite lobster roll recipe. Ninety gorgeous four-color photographs and delightful essays chock-full of Linda's salty wit and Martha's kitchen wisdom round out this lavish feast, making The Maine Summers Cookbook an irresistible treat for everyone with a zest for good food and good living-any time of year.
Linda Greenlaw's three bestselling books about life as a commercial fisherman -- THE HUNGRY OCEAN (1999), THE LOBSTER CHRONICLES (2002) and ALL FISHERMEN ARE LIARS (2004) -- have climbed as high as #2 on the New York Times bestseller list. She is the winner of the U.S. Maritime Literature Award in 2003, and the New England Book Award for nonfiction in 2004. Time Magazine called her 2005 RECIPES FROM A VERY SMALL ISLAND, co-authored with her mother Martha Greenlaw, a "must-have cookbook".
Before becoming a writer, Linda Greenlaw was the captain of a sword boat, the career that earned her a prominent role in Sebastian Junger's THE PERFECT STORM and a portrayal in the subsequent film. She has been featured on Good Morning America, Today, CBS Sunday Morning, The Martha Stewart Show, and National Public Radio. She now lives on Isle au Haut, Maine, where she captains a lobster boat.
When Linda Greenlaw confessed a desire to write fiction, readers responded with an enthusiastic "Please do!" At last, she satisfies their hunger with SLIPKNOT, a sharp-witted, compulsively readable mystery, the first in a series featuring marine investigator Jane Bunker. As she proved in THE HUNGRY OCEAN, no one knows the sea like Linda Greenlaw. And as she proved in THE LOBSTER CHRONICLES, no one has a better way with the telling details of Maine village life. SLIPKNOT delivers everything readers want: a great setting, wonderful characters, an authentic and original detective -- and a story that will keep them on the edge of their seats. I recognized the author from Deadliest Catch, so I decided to take a look at her cookbook. I liked the pictures (especially of the food) and the Maine stories. There are a few recipes I'd like to make: Spicy Yogurt Dip, Tomato and Brie Galette, Blueberry Streusel Muffins & the Thin French Pancakes.
Summering on an island on the Maine coast is what I dream of, ever since we spent a week sailing Penobscot Bay. Linda and Martha Greenlaw know just how to serve up recipes and fun as they invite you into Downeast Maine. They share simple, yet contemporary ideas for menus to share with family and friends along with a peek at life on a small island (32 households, $25,000. income per 2000 census). This is a place where "everyone knows your name" and where summer is appreciated and celebrated because of its brevity. Rafting up with the Greenlaws, for this culinary excursion, I find myself wanting more.
I'm a fan of Linda Greenlaw--have read her books, love her story of succeeding as a sword boat captain in a manly man's world and really enjoyed her first cookbook "Recipes from a Very Small Island". At least four recipes from that book have become regulars in my rotation (especially the black bean soup!) so I was excited to see she had a new cookbook out with her mom. Everything looks beautiful and delicious. Unfortunately, Linda got all fancy on us. Good dinner party food, but not for everyday. I did try the tomato, basil and feta salad which was yummy. I'm envious of her seemingly endless supply of lobster.
