බබා හේනයාට අවු: 80 වනතෙක් තම ගම මතක් නොවීම මටනම් ප්රශ්නාර්ථයකි. පොතේ අවසානය අසාර්තකයැය් මට සිතේ. කෙසේ නමුත් සරල බස්වහර හා අලංකාරය සහ කුතුහලය පිරුනු එක හුස්මටම කියවාගෙන යා හැකි කෘතියක් යැයි කීම නිවැරදි ය

The story was based on the earliest Sri Lankan society which was highly depended on work to carry on their living( this was decided by their caste they were born into).Following are a few examples:
GOVI: Occupation was rice production form land preparation to harvest and selling.
KARAWA: Occupation was maritime, navigation and trading experience(fisheries).
SALAGAMA: The community was traditionally associated with the cultivation and management of cinnamon.
HENA/RADA:Traditional washermen who still dominate the laundry trade.
This story unveils in the caste of "RADA". The story clearly resembles the way back society and how it treated towards the low castes,and how their lives went through that time.

November 11, 2017It's a story abot 1930 decay society. But it tells lot about modern society caste problem. Not only that, but also much more about parent's love what ever children's behaviour. How ever it's a nice book to read not for enjoy but for think.

පොත් කියවන්නන් ඇතුළත් සමාජ මාධ්ය සමූහ තුළ වැඩි වශයෙන් ම දැක තිබූ කෘතියක් වුවද, මෙය කියවා බලන්නට මා හට අවකාශයක් ලැබුණේ පසුගිය දිනෙකදීය. අතිශය සරල, සිත් ඇදගන්නාසුලු බස් වහරකින් ලියැවී තිබුණද කෘතියේ මුල් භාගය මා කියවාගෙන ගියේ තරමක් නොපැහැදුණු සිතකිනි. එනමුත්, කතාවට සැබැවින් ම ප්රවිශ්ට වීමෙන් පසුව එය කෙතරම් අපූරු වියමනක්දැයි මා හට නොසිතා ඉන්නට බැරි විය.
සත්යය නොදන්නා, එසේම එය දැනගැනීමටද කිසිදු උවමනාවක් නොමැත්තන් හට එය පැහැදිලි කර දීමට උත්සාහ කිරීමෙන් පළක් නොවනා බව මම ඉන් උගත්තෙමි. ඔවුන් එය පිළිගත්තද, නොපිළිගත්තද එම සදාතනික සත්යය සදාකල් විශ්වයේ රැඳී පවතිනු ඇති බව මම උගත්තෙමි. කෑගසා බෙරිහන්දී විරුද්ධත්වය පළ කර සිටින්නට විටෙක සිතට නැගෙනා ආවේගය මඳ සිනහවකින් දරා සිටීමේ අපූර්වත්වය මම උගත්තෙමි.

Everything was fine until it reached the last bit. It felt a bit unrealistic.
The storyline is fantastic. Something that wasn't much explored. The class division and the day-to-day life of a simple family whose service was immense and important but was totally underestimated. As I said, everything went well and was quite heart warming. Then it all went down the drain with a complete abrupt and unrealistic. If that wasn't there. this would've been perfect.

Senkottan is a definition about Uneducated,Class divided people in early sinhala soceity.As you read it you'll find it quite depressing.Writer managed to give a variation for his every character and give a meaningful character arch for every one of them.Although Weerappali Henaya and Garu Arachchi are my favourite among the story.

A realistically thought-provoking fable about the emotional and physical battles faced by reason of the bootless beliefs, misinterpreted culture and the caste system. Beautifully put in to words! This book leaves a lot to re-consider about the decisions we are to make, this is also a story that could make you amend the blunders you've committed, withal it could make you regret what you've lost and cherish what you have gained :)

වීරප්පුලි හේනයාගේ අහිංසක බලාපොරොත්තු සියල්ල සුණු විසුණු වී යන සැටිත්, සිය පවුල කෙරේ ඔහුගේ ඇති නිහඬ ආදරය, එකිනෙකා කෙරේ ඇති බැඳීම, ආදරය, මනාව පිළිබිඹු කරයි.
සෙංකොට්ටං, අවසානයේ ඔවුන් අකුරු ගලපයි. නමුත් අදටත් හීන ලෝක වල ජීවත් වන මෝඩ මිනිසුන් එලෙසමයි.

මහින්ද ප්රසාද් මස්ඉඹුලයන්ගේ "සෙංකොට්ටං" නවකතාව කියවා අවසන් කළ පසු මට දැනුණේ මා මෙතෙක් කියවූ විශිෂ්ටතම සිංහල නවකතාව මෙය බවයි. මීට පෙර ඔහුගේ "මැයි මාර ප්රසංගය" කියවූ අවස්ථාවේදී ඔහු තරමක් "Overrated" ලේඛකයෙකු යැයි මට සිතුණද, සෙංකොට්ටං කියවීමෙන් පසු මගේ එම අදහස සහමුලින්ම වෙනස් විය. ඔහු සැබවින්ම සම්මානයට හා ඇගයීමට පාත්ර විය යුතු දක්ෂ ලේඛකයෙකි. මෙම පොත තුළ ඇත්තේ අතිශය රසවත් මෙන්ම හදවතට සමීප වන කතාවකි. විශේෂයෙන්ම කුල පීඩනය හමුවේ බැටකන මිනිසුන්ගේ ජීවිත ඔහු අතිශය සාර්ථකව නිරූපණය කරයි. මෙහි එන බබා හේනයා, වික්ටර් සුරතිස්ස බවට පරිවර්තනය වීමේ කතා පුවත මගේ සිත් ගත් ප්රධානම කොටසයි. කතාව ගලා යන රිද්මය සහ මස්ඉඹුලයන්ගේ අසිරිමත් භාෂා ප්රකාශන ශෛලිය පාඨකයා ඒ ලෝකය තුළ ජීවත් කරවීමට සමත් වෙයි.

“වීරප්පුලි හේනයා”reminds me of my beloved father who passed away the same way,life is always so cruel to good people 💔the way that man was talking with that “ bo tree” towards the end of the story,it was the only hope he had,how innocent like it breaks my heart to think about how badly he was treated 😭😭
A story that reminds humans to have kindness and compassion
it just hurts me to think about how most of the main characters ended up having such tragic fates.just their day to day lives are so saddening to read about.
And when i was reading that last part i felt such unfamiliar emotions wash over me.i was sitting on my bed thinking that maybe one day in the future just like “ බබා හේනයා”
I would visit my childhood hometown after ages and might look for my father’s grave that probably won’t even be there in 70+ years.for a moment i was living in that future and the nostalgia i felt even while thinking about it was enough to wound my soul.life is such an illusion.
But that last part also got me thinking why “බබා හේනයා” had never visited his hometown for 70 years after he moved away, i mean that’s a little unrealistic, that was the only issue i had with the plot.
would highly recommend this book,it definitely left a lasting impression on me🥲

A disposition of great anger and prolonging depressive sadness was there with me as I reaching to the middle pages of the book. This story is about certain truth which no religion or cultural system attempted to change or expected to be changed. If you may dare to pull the dusted rotten white curtains of your legendary legacy you may find same truth, you may dare to pull the glistering golden woven current of your highly civilized today you find the same and this truth is what eternal. I admire this vehemence of emotional deceptions of this work and sentimental reality the author has created over these chain of incidents. Each circumstance of this novel has such a deep rooted analysis written such a natural way and of course anyone would write a review, the novel may give a plethora of inceptions to keep writing for thousands pages until the emotional triggers get settled. That is what made the novel one among perfect with minimal unfeasible story line gaps."Senkottang", the brutal truth of life & masterpiece work of word crafting.

"I feel that fragrance once again... the smell of boiled clothes mixed with washing soda. I will feel this, always. Yes... I will inhale it again and again, and its trace will be there in the very last breath that I take..."
This novel is a translation from the Sinhalese. The story brought me to tears. I was so moved with Baba Henaya's story. He might have been a hero, but the actual heroes in my eyes are Veerappuli Henaya and Podina. I felt like meeting Veerappuli Henaya and prostrating to his feet. What a human being he is! I couldn't pity Malma Ridee. Podina!! What a life she led!
I loved the whole story. In fact, since the story was split into parts, it felt like reading many short stories. It makes the readers appreciate learning alphabets and getting education, the oppression of the lower castes, the importance of family, the implications of teenage love and pregnancy, and many more. I really recommend it to everyone.
However, I felt that the translator had to get a good editor for the story. I found a lot of spelling mistakes, and they were very evident.

I personally love this novel because it does not give a chance for the reader to hang into one specific character and the author's ability to detail each and every character's emotions in vivid situations and more than the social standards and the storyline what interested me, were the personalities of these characters. Also, this storyline still suits today's reality, maybe not the social standards but these characters live within & with us.
I wanna share a very unpopular and a personal statement on this book. This book is kinda special to me cause there was this one incident which made me look at "eating meat" in a different way. Maybe it's me or the author's great ability either way credits to him. Anyway, I don't feel disgusted or pitty but guilt on the whole concept of eating another being. I wanna share a very unpopular and a personal statement on this book. This book is kinda special to me cause there was this one incident which made me look at "eating meat" in a different way. Maybe it's me or the author's great ability either way credits to him. Anyway, I don't feel disgusted or pitty but guilt on the whole concept of eating another being. "Senkottan" sent me back in time to when caste discrimination was at its worst. It is heartbreaking to see how innocent people were taken advantage of by so-called higher caste people. Seeing how easily their dreams and future could be destroyed is flabbergasting. This story shows a side of our society that is still not completely healed but is on its way there.
A question may arise about how effective it would be to have unwavering faith that the future will be better, regardless of how far away it is. But the story brings out positivity while revealing the sad truth to our hearts. It is a reminder as to why we should shape a better society for our future generations.
I will recommend "Senkottan" to you who are interested in seeing a dark side of the 1960's rural Sri Lankan society...

the first book written by the author i believe he is simply remarkable📚addictive📚i have finished reading the whole book with in few hours📚 ‘senkottan’ revolves around a ‘rada’ family; Traditional laundry working caste of old Sri Lankan society. In this rada family their days spend with washing dirty cloths of high caste people. 📚 some once told me it was very hard to understand the story of this novel. But it isn’t. Senkottan is a novel that reveals the old sri lankan society and how it treated towards the low castes,and how their lives went through with pain and mistreat. 📚a remarkable story.

Probably one if the best sinhala novels ever. Story is based on a pre British era in srilanka around a rural low caste family of laundry men . Story is so good and well written i was in a shock and depressed for somedays when reading through some parts. But feel it speaks the reality in the old society the struggle, family, society, fatherhood, noble men, religion, cast system etc. writer had done a great job as usual. this is a best seller in srilanka for so long now . Mahinda prasads best work as per my view from what i have read. (i m yet to read manikkawatha) . This is a must read but remember its not a feel happy book

The story cries the victimisation of a family in the Sri Lankan society. Masimbula symbolically points out the caste division in the society which causes this family to be victimised. It is sad that people still continue these kind of discrimination towards some castes. What even more tragic is that no one raised their voices for it. In Western countries they fought for their freedom against discrimination but why do Sri Lankans passively bear this kind of oppression and discrimination.

This story is very cruel and beautiful at the same time. it revolves around the regressive mindset of our people a few decades back, maybe even now. Story is captivating from the beginning. Characters are very well written. Even though I don't agree with how the book ended I must tell you this is one of the best books I have read in a while.
