Clear guide to the New Perennial / Piet Oudolf style for beginner gardeners. It could talk more about growing from seed (it relies on buying plants from nurseries, which would become expensive) but for a beginner that is understandable. It frames the style as if they've invented it but again they've made it achievable for a complete amateur so that is an innovation. I've read a few Piet Oudolf books and similar and often they're aimed at landscape gardeners, when actually it would suit many people if only they knew how simple it is. A "low maintenance garden" doesn't have to be evergreen shrubs, astroturf and a constant stream of bedding plants. I wish my neighbours would read this book.

Borrowed this from the library to help me plan a garden in a HUGE area at the front of my house that needed a total overhaul. I'm not sure I was able to incorporate all of the ideas because of different climates between my home and the author's, but I loved the ideas so much. Planting to help the bugs and creatures in your area, planting to prevent weeding and create a low-maintenance garden, planting to create a gorgeous area of wild-ish beauty--all things I'd love to do. I might buy this for future reference. Or just borrow it lots and lots of times from the library.

Beautiful photographs! I love the idea and am myself almost done transitioning my garden to 100% perennials (except for my edibles). What I don't totally care for is the "wild" aspect of the garden look. My sensibilities are more ordered, but you can certainly get that with less work than what "traditional" gardens demand. Also, likely because the author is writing for a British or European audience, many of the plants were unfamiliar to me and so many of my perennial favorites (pun intended) currently thriving and comprising a good 50% of my garden are not mentioned at all (peonies, Asiatic/oriental lilies, cyclamen, hosta, fern, astilbe, coral bells). The way the author has sorted plants (dots, spikes, panicles—a word I'd never even heard of— and others) is very interesting and a great new way of seeing how to design your garden. I don't think Bellamy gives garden designer Piet Oudolf enough credit! Having visited NYC's High Line many times, I see what Bellamy is trying to convey, and recommend a deep read into High Line NYC.

I feel like going out and gardening right away!
Lots of tips for the beginner who likes things a bit wilder, insect friendly, and easy-care.

There is certainly a lot I'll be taking from this book. I didn't necessarily agree with the recommended design choices but that's ok too, since it wasn't a focal point and Bellamy definitely encourages the reader to think about what they like. What I really didn't like was the switch from Latin to common names (I read the German translation, maybe it's not the same in the English version) without referencing the other, since the flowers are sorted by Latin names but otherwise often referring to only the common name. Pictures were always labelled with both.

I found someone who loves a purple flower garden as much as I do. Straightforward information and design tips. Sample garden beds towards the back were very helpful and contained lots of my favorite flowers. I made a bunch of notes before returning this book to the library. Beautiful pictures!

What an amazing gardening book!! The concept is, well, BRILLIANT... and promising. Insert disclaimer here: I have not used the principles within this book but will at the earliest chance!

Like many, in an effort to support declining pollinators, I planned to create a wildflower meadow in my garden. I was ready to order turf seeded with wildflowers. I am so happy I didn't as this wild garden will better suit our existing garden, give us a wider array of colourful flowers with greater longevity, height and texture diversity.

I know this review is crazily random but I am very excited by this idea and the genius of it. Lucy Bellamy has created a plant puzzle that can be customised and scaled to suit any gardener's taste. The principle is simple: select an assortment of plants, create a blocked garden plan for your area, buy smaller sized/cheaper plants and grow!

The idea is pure genius as is the layout of the book. We start with plant categories. The categories are divided into umbellifers, spikes, dots, flatheads, panicles, grasses and bulbs/corms/tubers. Within each category are pages of beautiful plants that are good for nature. Each page details a plant, explains why it is good (and for whom), gives details about the plant (colour, height, spacing, etc), the best species to choose and lists the other plants it goes well with (both flowers and grasses). You pick 7+/- plants you like best, mixing between the categories and picking different heights, then work on the plan. Lucy's got loads of templates and example plans that mix and match the categories and gives lots of planting guidance. This book is a gem for experienced gardeners and novices alike.

Picking plants will be the hardest part for me as I love them all. I made a list of the plants I liked best and my list goes well beyond 7. I decided to give a tick to each 'works well with' plant that matched a plant from my list. Those with the most ticks are my plants. I'm pleased with the selection and now am off to work on my plan. I cannot wait to go shopping and get planting. Thank you, Lucy, for your terrific system!
