Discovered wedged beneath the back seat of a 1964 Volkswagen van, this brilliant scrapbook filled with real-life memorabilia celebrates the glory days of the Grateful Dead and the remarkable subculture that sprang up around the legendary band's many appearances around the country. It's a picaresque insider's recollection of that colorful, carefree life, complete with the treasured memorabilia of a fan who attended hundreds of concerts. Deadhead Forever includes three decades' worth of Dead lore and stories, plus more than 100 pictures, concert tickets, and other evocative souvenirs.
Deadhead Forever by Michael Hayes (Running Press Book Publishers 2001)(782.42166) is a hoot! It purports to be a notebook that was found wedged between the seats of an old 1968 VW microbus, and it is actually a scrapbook of one fan's year on tour with the Grateful Dead. I was there for years, and this book brings back a lot of wonderful memories. My rating: 7/10, finished 2/7/13.
This book is awesome. Brings back much of the feel of the lot scene, and the overall atmosphere surrounding this great musical machine. Great conceptual idea. Loved every page and frequently look back at it.
A quick fun read, heavy on photos, scanned memorabilia and news articles, and handwritten passages, this book is the "found scrapbook" of a fictional Dead Head found aboard a VW Van purchased used. Clever idea, and fun to flip through. Received it as a gift from my very understanding wife, and am thankful to have read it.
