"Quando a nossa alimentação, a nossa vestimenta e os nossos tectos forem apenas o fruto exclusivo da produção estandardizada, chegará a vez do pensamento. Toda a ideia de não obedecer a uma bitola, deverá ser eliminada. A produção coletiva ou em massa entrou na nossa vida económica, política e até religiosa, de tal modo que certas nações já substituíram a ideia de Deus pela de coletividade. Ainda é muito cedo. Aí é que está o perigo. A tensão é grande. O mundo caminha para o seu ponto de ruptura. Os homens estão inquietos."
Ainda só li o primeiro volume, por isso não tenho ainda a opinião final, mas estou a gostar bastante da escrita do senhor Steinbeck.
E esta frase cai como uma luva na situação vivida atualmente.

This is perhaps one of the most iconic novels of the New World, especially America and The West. I will not venture right now into definitive judgements about it as I still have volume 2 to read, but as it started out it is very good. If it is to try to distill it into a single phrase, I consider the saga of the Hamiltons and Trasks families make up a interesting section through the typical settlers from the American West, but also attempting to prove some important ethical values the author considered to be important for anyone in life.
O could not help to notice that Steinbeck has the great quality of writing exceptional modern tragedies. I suspect this ability comes directly from the Ancient Greece and Roman culture, via the English classic writers, starting with Shakespeare and following with Dickens, Bronte sisters or Thomas Hardy. This is doubled by a great attention to human nature and to fundamental questions of humanity.
After some careful consideration and after reading some of the other reviews, I believe the novel looks into human nature from various angles. On the surface of the prose is the family relation, especially the duality of brothers. This is doubled with the Cain and Abel myth. It was the first novel that made me realize that we are all having two primordial sins. On top of the one that made Adam and Eve leave Eden, we are all Cain's sons and daughters and we bare his sin with us.
Second major theme of the novel is the choice we all have. Choice in how we live, in how we want to interact with the others and the world around us and in respect to our inheritance. We all have and make choices and these shapes us and impact on how we are perceived by others. Although this may seem obvious, it is well inter-weaved with the story and makes a deeper impact on the reader than if it was plainly told, as it id done in most inspirational books.
Another important plan of the novel is the purpose in life. Through the vast time period covered in the narration, we got to learn how the characters decided and discovered their purpose in life. Of course that there are some that do not have one their entire life or for some part of it, and we got to know what it is the downside of this choice.
All in all, I feel this to be more than a normal novel. It is mostly a formative book, written perhaps to convey some powerful messages John Steinbeck considered important in life. I feel he did not overestimated them.

Terceira vez que leio este livro e continua a ser um dos meus favoritos. Dizer mais do que isto não vale a pena, porque teria muita dificuldade em não contar, aqui, a história toda, de fio a pavio, pelo que apenas posso dizer que é uma leitura daquelas obrigatórias. Não podem não ler este livro magnífico de John Steinbeck. :)

Gjennom kampen mellom det gode og det onde i karakterenes liv, setter Steinbeck spørsmålstegn ved determinisme, og åpner for en nyanserik forståelse av menneskelig frihet og moral. Dette gjør Øst for Eden til en dyp refleksjon over hva det betyr å være menneske – en uendelig søken etter balansen mellom våre mørkeste impulser og vår evne til å gjøre det rette.

Ο πρώτος τόμος χωρίζεται σε 3 μέρη και το καθένα σε κάμποσα κεφάλαια. Το 1ο μέρος ξεκινάει με μια υπέροχη περιγραφή της κοιλάδας του Σαλίνας. Δε μ'αρέσουν οι περιγραφές, βαριέμαι αφόρητα. Αυτή όμως ήταν σαν πίνακας, θα ήθελα να είμαι εκεί να τα βλέπω όλα αυτά μπροστά μου, να τα αγγίζω, να μυρίζω τα λουλούδια....Αχ, ρε καταπληκτικέ Στάινμπεκ..!
Στη συνέχεια μας εισάγει στην οικογένεια Τρασκ: αυστηρός, πωρωμένος με το στρατό πατέρας, δύο αδέρφια τελείως διαφορετικά (από διαφορετικές μητέρες),αντιπαθείς τον Τσάρλυ, λυπάσαι τον Άνταμ. Είναι μια σχέση Κάιν&Άβελ. Η δολοφονία δεν έγινε ποτέ (τουλάχιστον στον Α΄τόμο απ'όσο ξέρω), αλλά οι απογοητεύσεις και η προδοσία ήταν εκεί...
Έπειτα παρουσιάζεται η οικογένεια Χάμιλτον: μια αχτίδα ευτυχίας στο έργο. Ο Στάινμπεκ υιοθετεί του προσωπείο του εγγονού τους ως αφηγητή με επίθετο μάλιστα το ίδιο το δικό του!!
Τελευταία γνωρίζουμε την Κέιτ ή Κάθυ: δυνατή, έντονη ιστορία... τη μισείς εύκολα, απορείς μαζί της, αγνοείς τα κίνητρά της και από πού πηγάζει τόσο μίσος. Σχεδόν χαίρεσαι για την κακοποίηση που υπέστη και μετά απορείς με τον εαυτό σου (μα τι σόι άνθρωπος είσαι τέλος πάντων;)
Αφού λοιπόν ο αφηγητής μας έχει δώσει ό,τι χρειαζόμαστε για τους ήρωές μας ξεκινάει το βασικό κομμάτι: Ο έρωτας του Άνταμ για την Κάθυ και πόσο ηλίθιο και τυφλό μπορεί να σε κάνει τελικά αυτός ο θεός Cupid. Δεν έχω καταλάβει γιατί είναι τόσο δόλια η Κάθυ...τι θέλει; Και αυτόν τον Άνταμ να τον λυπηθείς ή να σκεφτείς "καλά να πάθει τόσο χαλβάς που είναι";
Η αφήγηση ρέει γοργά, διάλογοι, στιχομυθίες, εξέλιξη δράσης και χαρακτήρων. Ο Λι, ο Κινέζος υπηρέτης, είναι ένα θραύσμα σοφίας: Τι είναι τα στερεότυπα; Γιατί υπάρχουν; Ποιον εξυπηρετούν; Είμαστε ρατσιστές επειδή είμαι αδαείς ή επειδή απλά μισούμε το ξένο; Ελέγχει κάποιος τις σκέψεις μας και τις αντιλήψεις μας;
Προς το τέλος του 2ου μέρους πλατιάζει λίγο η ιστορία, εισάγονται ηθογραφικές περιγραφές του τόπου και κάποιων συγκεκριμένων ηθών...είναι το μοναδικό κομμάτι που κουράστηκα αλλά κράτησε μόνο 3-4 σελίδες και ευτυχώς κατέληξε κάπου!!
Το τελευταίο μέρος παρουσιάζει τη ζωή των Χάμιλτον μετά από κάποια χρόνια, που έχουν ήδη περάσει άσχημες στιγμές. Ο Σάμουελ έχει γεράσει, έχει κουραστεί, έχει χάσει το ψυχικό του σθένος και αποφασίζει να φύγει πλέον, καθώς έκανε και τον κύκλο του στην ιστορία...μας έδωσε ό,τι καλύτερο και πολυτιμότερο είχε. Οι σκηνές του αποχαιρετισμού με τον Άνταμ και τον Λή είναι νομίζω οι πιο συγκινητικές του Α' τόμου.
Γενικότερα για τη συγκεκριμένη έκδοση: Υπήρχαν κάποια γραμματικά και συντακτικά λάθη (επιθετικός προσδ. σε λάθος πτώση, ερωτήσεις χωρίς ερωτηματικά, χάνονται κόμματα κλπ). Ήταν όμως αυτό ακριβώς, ένα λάθος του επιμελητή, οπότε δε θα τα υπολογίσω στα αστεράκια μου.

📖Di cerita ini John Steinbeck akan membawa kita ke era akhir abad ke-19 dan awal ke- 20, dimana awal cerita disuguhin bagaimana indahnya lembah Salinas di California tetapi kurang subur untuk bercocok tanam. Disini juga digambarkan bagaimana di masa itu hukum sangat kurang ditegakan untuk keadilan. Hanya sebatas mengganti nama menjadi nama yg baru kau yang melakukan kejahatan bisa lepas dari jeratan hukum. Lau kurangnya ilmu tetang dunia medis sehingga banyak yg meninggal karena sakit yg tidak bisa di tanganin segera, susahnya komunikasi karena butuh waktu yg lama untuk sampai keperima pesan, untuk pendidikan juga masih tergolong minim sehingga banyak masih masyarakat yg buta huruf ntah itu para orang tua dan anak-anak. Dengan semua kesulitan tadi John Steinbeck berhasil menggambarkan kesederhaan, ketulusan dan vibe berada di pedesaan dan lingkungan masyarkat.

📖Jujur di buku pertama ini masih banyak yg gantung ceritanya menurutku. Ibarat ini awal cerita dengan mengenalkan karakter yg ada dengan menggambarkan tiap karakter seperti apa perannya. Salah satu karakter yg aku suka adalah Sam Hamilton yg menginspirasi dan banyak membantu orang-orang sekitarnya, hanya komunikasi Sam dengan istrinya Liza tidak sebagus image dia di masyarakat. Selain keluarga Sam, ada juga keluarga Cyrus Trask yg punya dua anak laki-laki bernama Adam dan Charles. Cyrus mendidik anak-anaknya cukup keras seperti militer. Hubungan Adam dan Charles sebagai kakak adik waktu remaja bisa dikatakan tidak baik karena ada kecemburuan berkaitan dengan kasih sayang ayah mereka. Lalu akan ada Cathy si wanita cantik, terlihat polos tetapi manipulatih banget dah. The real kejahatan dan kegelapan itu adalah Cathy.

"La răsărit de Eden"
Două generații care se încearcă să scape de blestemul lui Cain și Abel.
Cain și Abel, doi frați ce își aduc jertfele în fața lui Dumnezeu. Acesta se uită cu plăcere spre jertfa lui Abel, ceea ce îi provoacă supărare lui Cain. "Atunci a zis Domnul Dumnezeu către Cain: Pentru ce te-ai întristat și pentru ce s-a posomorât fața ta? Când faci bine, oare nu-ți este fața senină? Iar de nu faci bine, păcatul bate la ușă și caută să te târască, dar tu..."
Ei, aici urmează, în funcție de traduceri, diverse variante:
"...dar tu să-l stăpânești."
"...dar tu îl vei stăpâni."
Ca o poruncă. Sau ca o promisiune.
Totuși, ignorând traducerile și mergând la originea ebraică, pare că termenul "timshel" se traduce prin "...dar tu poți să-l stăpânești". Adică, Dumnezeu oferă posibilitatea de alegere. Nu impune, nu promite. Deci, omul își poate alege drumul în viață, poate lupta asupra răului, poate câștiga.
Timshel - tu poți.
Adam și Charlie - unul e preferat de tată, celălalt luptă pentru a câștiga dragostea tatălui.
Copiii lui Adam - Aron și Caleb, unul e preferat de tată, celălalt luptă pentru dragostea tatălui.
Oamenii sunt urmașii lui Cain, cel ce și-a ucis fratele Abel. Charlie și Caleb au posibilitatea de a alege să nu urmeze calea lui Cain. Dar e greu: dezechilibrul de iubire din familie e dureros și macină.
"Povestea lui Cain și Abel este povestea cea mai cunoscută din lume pentru că este povestea fiecăruia. Cred că este povestea-simbol a sufletului omenesc. Cea mai mare teroare pe care o poate simți un copil este să nu fie iubit, și iadul de care se teme este să nu fie respins. Iar odată cu respingerea vine și furia, iar furia atrage răzbunare - aceasta este istoria omenirii.
Dacă ar fi exclusă posibilitatea de a fi respins, omul n-ar mai fi ceea ce este. Aici este totul - startul, începutul."

Este o carte despre care pot spune că mi-ar fi părut rău să nu apuc să o citesc în viața asta.
Mi-a plăcut mult de blajinul Samuel Hamilton, omul cu nouă copii și o mie de idei creative.
L-am preferat pe ascuns pe înțeleptul Lee, stâlpul sprijinitor al familiei lui Adam.
Iar la sfârșit l-am îndrăgit pe Caleb, văzând lupta din sufletul lui și înțelegând nevoia lui de iubire. Ca orice om.

I picked up East of Eden after watching the classic film adaptation, feeling curious about the original novel behind the story. While the movie had left a strong impression, the book—unsurprisingly—offers a much deeper and more nuanced world.
At first, I found it difficult to get into the narrative. The early chapters introduce the Hamilton family and a somewhat elusive narrator whose position within the story is not immediately clear. However, once I realized that the narrator is actually a descendant of the Hamiltons (the son of Samuel’s daughter Olive), the pieces began to fall into place. From that point on, I was completely absorbed and devoured the first volume.
The portrayal of Samuel Hamilton is particularly memorable. He’s presented as a warm, insightful, and endearingly flawed figure—perhaps even a bit idealized. Knowing the narrator is part of his lineage, I couldn’t help but wonder if this sympathetic portrayal is slightly biased, a gentle reminder that we are seeing these events through a very personal lens.
Among all the characters, my favorite is Lee, Adam Trask’s Chinese servant. Outwardly, he plays into the stereotype of the time: speaking in broken English, wearing a queue, and fulfilling others' expectations of what a "Chinaman" should be. But beneath the surface, Lee is an exceptionally intelligent, well-read man who speaks fluent English and is deeply versed in literature and philosophy. His growing friendship with Samuel—another outsider, as an Irish immigrant—is one of the most heartwarming and honest relationships in the book.
The character of Cathy, on the other hand, feels almost overwhelmingly dark. Her portrayal as a deeply malevolent woman borders on excessive at times, though I understand Steinbeck's intention may have been to contrast her with the era’s idealized image of womanhood.
What stands out most is the way Steinbeck explores identity and perception. Whether it’s gender, ethnicity, or one’s role in society, many characters are caught between societal expectations and the more complicated truths of their lives. Their struggles feel painfully real—and it’s this emotional honesty that keeps me eager to see where their paths lead in the next volume.

Sullo sfondo della Valle dell'Eden nella California del Sud due famiglie, rispettivamente i Trask originari del New England e gli Hamilton irlandesi, verso la fine dell'800 decisero di trasferirsi in campagna per ricominciare da zero. La famiglia Trask, i primi ad arrivare, sono numerosi e chiassosi con due capifamiglia Samuel e Liza dal carattere forte, due veri capisaldi non solo per i loro figli ma anche per tutti i loro vicini. I veri protagonisti del romanzo sono i due gemelli Trask: il timido Cal e lo scapestrato Aron che incarnano i due fratelli Caino ed Abele, non sono stati scelti a casa i loro nomi infatti. La mole del romanzo non è di sicuro delle più appetibili e potrebbe davvero scoraggiare, soprattutto chi ha già avuto modo di vedere il film che, tra le righe rappresenta solo la seconda parte del romanzo: quello che mi sento di dire è di non lasciarvi scoraggiare perchè dietro ogni pagina ed ogni personaggio di Steinbeck si nasconde un mondo meraviglioso. Il romanzo esplora mondi e temi differenti: da cornice alle vicende ci sono le splendide colline della California del Sud con i suoi campi coltivati e la vita agreste, in mezzo a questo paradiso si svolgono le vicende di queste due famiglie e il tema ricorrente è quello della libertà e del sapersi accettare. Questo romanzo rappresenta l'apice della carriera letteraria di Steinbeck e ne celebra anche la vita: un personaggio minore del romanzo incarna l'autore stesso così come le vicende della famiglia rappresentano quello che ha vissuto lui stesso in prima persona. La veridicità degli eventi e la rappresentazione di quello spaccato di vita americana rendono l'intero romanzo vibrante ed ammaliante: John Steinbeck non solo riesce a portare il lettore in una dimensione lontana da lui sia culturalmente che storicamente ma lo coinvolge a tal punto nelle vicende di questi due fratelli che diventa impossibile smettere di leggere. Un romanzo di formazione così come tutti i suoi romanzi, la Valle dell'Eden è un meraviglioso affresco americano che va letto con tutto il tempo del mondo per assaporarne ogni pagina e la cruda realtà descritta vi colpirà al cuore.

Os Livros do Brasil têm feito várias edições da Colecção Dois Mundos ao longo dos anos, com a mesma capa, embora esta não seja a edição que possuo já que esta se refere a 2001. e o meu foi adquirido em 1984 não vi motivo para acrescentar outra edição.
Li este livro há mais de 25 anos tinha então 31 anos, pelo que se torna difícil apreciar a leitura com tantos anos de distância pelo que o que me vem mais à memória são as imagens do filme do mesmo nome com o inesquecível James Dean - pelo que recordo de outras leituras de Steinbeck por exemplo AS Vinhas da Ira - outro que vi o filme - achei que John Steinbeck não é um autor de fácil leitura.6/10
