This is the autobiographical story of the life of Gabriel Horn (White Deer of Autumn). You could say my rating is biased because I had Mr. Horn as a creative writing teacher here in St. Petersburg, but it really was an amazing book.

I've always been sympathetic to the native American 'cause' but reading this book (and meeting Gabriel) opened my eyes to many parts of the culture I was never aware of. He's been around and seen a lot. Reading the book is like hanging out with the author. One minute you're awed by the wisdom he relates and often incredibly saddened by the truth of it.

Gabriel Horn (White Deer of Autumn) of St. Petersburg, Florida made his Great Change on November 3, 2023. Because we had known each other for many years and were close in age and background, I took my copy of "Native Heart" from the shelf to read for probably the 5th time.

His words comforted me in this sad time. May they do the same for his family, students, and those who benefited from his writings.
