I read and/or discussed this book with my kids. Photographs capture the most significant events and images of 9/11 and maps and diagrams help explain flight paths, tower structural design, and the pentagon damage. Helpful book. My ten-year-old son was fascinated (predictably) by the details of the towers' design and engineering that in the end led to their collapse (but also lasted long enough for many to escape).

Good book.

This is a good informational book with awesome photographs that tell the horrible story of what happened that day. While some of it is painful to look at and remember, my students weren't even born when this happened. This book shares what is important in a very appropriate way. I'm taking it to school tomorrow to share.

A Nation Challenged, written by several people working for The New York Times, is a non-fictional book, covering a topic most Americans wish was a fictional one. The goal for this book was to try to explain in words how the events that took place on 9/11 effected the United States, which is a very hard goal to accomplish, because some events are very difficult to explain in words, 9/11 being one of the hardest. Although the difficulty of this task is very immense, this book does a fantastic job of accomplishing it by using multiple people's descriptions and using appropriate imagery. Descriptions of sounds or sights that the American people, and more specifically New York City residents/tourists witnessed, aide in explaining how intense and horrible the day of September 11th, 2001 truly was.

Another factor that improved the descriptions, is the people writing the accounts personally witnessed the events. The several different writers were all working at the The New York Times office, which is in the same city and very close to what we now know as Ground Zero. This book isn't an autobiography, but the fact that the authors experienced what they are writing about, makes the book much more credible. This also explains the mood or tone of the book. Throughout the book, you will begin to see that it's almost as if these people begin to write about certain sounds and certain people that they heard or saw during the events. Whether or not this is intentional, it does improve credibility in my opinion.

Overall, I believe this account of the tragic events of 9/11, is the best I have read covering this topic. The main reason is when you finish reading this book, coming from somebody who wasn't around to personally experience these evil acts, you are able to gain more of an idea to what it felt like to be an American, September 11, 2001. You see how the American people felt at the time of events, which was not much, as most were in shock and could not believe what had happened. You also see what people felt after the grieving was over; an immense anger towards the group and mastermind behind these vicious attacks. If you want to read a descriptive account about the attacks of 9/11, I definitely recommend this book for you.

This was a different informational book about 9/11. The photographs were one that I hadn't seen before, and it included detailed maps of each building; the two towers and the Pentagon. There were maps, and a glossary included, which was very helpful.
It also discussed material that I haven't seen in any other book on this topic...the military action taken, Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan and the leader of the terrorist network Al Qaeda (The Base) and showed the interior of a Mountain Bunker. It discussed the Taliban.
I also found it interesting to read about how sky safety changed, the threat of Anthrax, and an excellent list of resources to use if you wanted to look for further information.

Designed for older children but suitable for adults as a quick re-visit of all things 9/11, A Nation Challenged is primarily assembled from photographs and bits of stories that appeared inThe New York Times in the days and months after the attacks. Published in mid-2002, it has become dated, but is a contrast to present day, as the 20th anniversary approaches, and US troops have withdrawn from Afghanistan and the Taliban has returned. But a mightier tower has arisen at Ground Zero, and memorials have been created there, at the Pentagon, Shanksville, and in communities across the country and globe.

'A Visual History of 9/11 and Its Aftermath' '...a breathtaking commemoration of the photojournalism and reporting that won an unprecedented six Pulitzer Prizes for The New York Times' This book is filled with photos, charts and graphs from all countries involved in this horrendous event. Hard to read, harder to see the photographs.
