Empathy!
This book has twisted and pulled me into multiple directions. Never before have l enjoyed such a lack of sleep!

Έχοντας διαβάσει τα τρία πρώτα βιβλία της σειράς με τον επιθεωρητή Τζάκ Κάφερι, το 4ο δεν έχει σε καμια περίπτωση την ίδια δυναμική με τα προηγούμενα.
Περίμενα πολύ περισσότερα μιας κι ο πήχης των προσδοκιών μου είχε ανεβεί πολύ ψηλά, αλλα δεν ανταποκρίθηκε επ'ουδενί.

SKIN: A NOVEL (Jack Caffery Book 4) [2011] By Mo Hayder
My Review 4.0 Stars
I first became interested in the late Mo Hayder’s works when I stumbled across “BIRDMAN” in my search for dark psychological thrillers/police procedurals. This chilling debut thriller about a serial killer stalking London was a finalist for the Edgar Award. “Birdman” garnered a tremendous amount of attention and critical acclaim. The novel and its author were precisely what and who I had been searching for in my quest for fiction dark as a remorseless assassin’s heart. “Birdman” (1999) was originally published the first of January 2001, and Hayder followed up her chilling debut novel with her terrifying novel “THE TREATMENT”, published in June 2002.
“BIRDMAN” (at the time I read it) pushed my tolerance level for horror through my existing boundaries and through the roof. “THE TREATMENT” on the other hand terrified me and disturbed me more than any novel I had ever read up to that point in my life. Karin Slaughter and Moe Hayder were friends, and Slaughter is quoted as saying that “…THE TREATMENT scared the hell out of me”.
I purchased most of Mo Hayder’s works to be read at my leisure, to include her serial featuring the tortured detective Jack Caffery, but also her standalones.
I read the third DI Caffery novel “Ritual” (the Kindle version published by Atlantic Monthly Press in September 2008). This gripping and horrifying entry in the series is set in Bristol and introduces the character of Phoebe “Flea” Marley, a police diver. This entry was violent, visceral, and about as gruesome as anything I had ever read to that point. There are tie-ins to the fourth Caffery installment “SKIN”.
“SKIN” (2008) was first published March 26, 2009. As previously noted, the story followed the gruesome, “take it to the limit” horror classic “Ritual” and reprised the role of the tough character of “Flea” Marley, a police diver. I purchased the Grove Press Reprint Edition (February 8, 2011) with print length 467 pages. It was sitting on my proverbial “Unread Books Shelf” and I figured it was time to figuratively dust it off and as they say in Britain “give it a read”.
I finished reading “SKIN” last night, and I was content with the ending of the book. But let’s start at the beginning. Readers of Hayder’s Caffery series will recall that Jack relocated to Bristol from his family home because he had no ties remaining to tether him there, no reason to stay. That is cryptic but the reason is a colossal spoiler. The police are alerted to the death of a young woman whose demise is ruled a suicide but despite the ruling by the savvy forensic pathologist the death has no supporting elements of any kind to point to a suicide. Jack remains haunted by the muti and all of the knowledge of black magic that he now feels is a part of him as surely as his handcuffs. He suspects a supernatural component to the girl’s suicide which blinds him to other connections and possibilities. A patch of skin was excised from the suicide victim which preys upon Jack’s mind.
He and Marley are not together in the story, beyond working independently to solve the cases of the “suicides” (and in Jack’s case, the missing patch of hair which is used in black magic).
A prominent young woman and her dog go missing from her apartment and her ex-husband reports her missing the following day. This particular “misp” (missing person) has everyone running around in circles because it is a high-profile victim. Jack is assigned by his boss to the case as his top-notch investigator. The family and the press want action taken immediately and results yesterday.
The serial offender is going about his business untouched, and his fantasies and actions are deeply disturbing if not horrifying. It bothered me as a reader that Jack was going his own way as usual, and his insubordination bothered me less than his failure to work alongside Marley or to minimally know what was going on with her. His cop’s instincts told him that something was wrong in Marley’s orbit.
Apparent suicides are occurring with some regularity and are connected to Elf’s Grotto, the bottomless network of flooded quarries just outside the city.
Marley plays a key role in this novel and diverges from Jack in her own fully fleshed out story line. It is impossible at least for me not to feel conflicted about Flea’s goals and her actions to bring them to fruition. Her failure was not foreseeable by this reader, but only self-delusion could have blinded Flea to the pitfalls of her actions.
Jack meets with The Walking Man on three occasions during this novel, two of which we are privy to the nature and conversations.
The author does introduce one of her most despicable villains to date and I could throw in “horrifying” as well because he is masterful at altering what the police force sees and acts upon.
I did not like the separate story lines with Jack and Marley. The last 25% of the novel escalated the tension and anticipation significantly. Then Jack’s, Marley’s, and even The Walking Man’s plotlines dovetailed as the credits were closing. I held my breath at the end, but then was able to breathe. It ended like there was a great force somewhere out there who cared to consider human loyalties and frailties.
This was not my favorite installment thus far but coming up next is the Edgar Award Winning novel “GONE” (Jack Caffery Book 5) and Agt. Flea Marley is back on the scene, not to mention the press is calling Hayder “maestro of the sinister”. One thing is for sure, no one has even written in the same style as Hayder’s simple “take no prisoner’s prose” that is bleak, stark, and downright petrifying as well as terrifying at times.

Wow. Animalistic, very dark, twisted and gripping.
I’m really enjoying learning more about both Jack and Flea as this series continues. Two brilliant leads in the book with evolving back stories and their own twisted pasts (and presents). There are clues in previous books, little threads that lead you from one book in the serious to another and it’s brilliant.
I’m ready to start the next one tonight!!
If you have a strong stomach and you want your thoughts, boundaries and feelings pushed to the limit I fully recommend.

I have been binge reading this series over the last few months and I have yet to find a single fault with it!
This installment in the Jack Caffrey crime series is pretty much a continuation of Ritual, the previous release. It, like its predecessor, follows not just Detective Inspector Jack Caffrey but Police Diver Flea Marley and their converging story lines. The split perspective allows for multiple sub-plots to be explored and for the reader to gain a further insight into varying roles and procedures inside the police force - something I find fascinating.
As always, both the story and the crime we are presented with aren't as cut-and-dried as they first appear, and the meandering plot leaves me puzzling out (and totally being misdirected) the crime through false endings, diversionary clues and superfluous characters all designed to lead the reader off the scent.
This tale is undoubtedly chilling but its focus seems to be more on the human aspect of the crime and the effects what we see have on us. The moralistic lines are blurred here and it is for the reader to decide who the bad guys really are...

In Ritual, the last book, I really struggled with Flea ; a new character whom had been introduced into the Jack Caffrey series. I was more engaged with her in Skin but I'm still left questioning what her character is bringing to the party. For me, the books work best when the focus is on Jack Caffrey ( it his series after all !) and The Walking Man, who only makes a couple of brief but crucial appearances in the book.
However, despite my misgivings regarding Flea, I still greatly enjoyed Skin. Mo Hayder is such a great writer and all the classic elements that she's known for are here. Basically : gruesome, dark and a little bit twisted where everyone is compromised in some way.
I'll have to make the most of the remaining books in the series as it looks like Mo Hayder has given up on crime thrillers for the foreseeable future. She's now writing under the name Theo Clare and will be publishing her first Fantasy novel at the end of this year. I'll definitely be checking it out.

Ο Μπεν Τζέικς και η Λούση Μαχόνι είναι νεκροί. Η Μίτσι Κίτσον αγνοείται. Και η υπάρχει και η υπόθεση από το προηγούμενο βιβλίο, η οποία εκκρεμεί.
Με τον Μπεν Τζέικς ασχολούμαστε μόνο στην αρχή και νιώθω ότι μπήκε μόνο και μόνο για να μας ανακατέψει, η παλιά υπόθεση μια μπαίνει μια βγαίνει και την ιστορία με την αγνοούμενη Μίτσι Κίτσον την ψιλοβαριόμουν και με εκνεύριζε ο όλος -λάθος- χειρισμός της υπόθεσης. Η Λούση Μαχόνι, η βασική μας υπόθεση -αφού ξεμπερδέψαμε το ποιος φόνος είναι αυτοκτονία και ποια αυτοκτονία φόνος- είχε ένα κάποιο ενδιαφέρον.....αλλά δυστυχώς δεν με ικανοποίησε.....ούτε ο τρόπος με τον οποίο εξελίχτηκαν τα πράγματα, ούτε ιδιαίτερη αγωνία είχε, ούτε και η αποκάλυψη του δολοφόνου ή τα κίνητρα του (κυρίως αυτά!) με έπεισαν.....
Φυσικά και είχε κάποιες καλές στιγμές αλλά σε γενικές γραμμές χλιαρό...
Διαβάζονταν πολύ γρήγορα, η ώρα μου πέρασε ευχάριστα και νομίζω πως ήταν καλύτερο από το προηγούμενο! (αλλά σαφώς κατώτερο των δύο πρώτων!)
B.R.A.CE. 2018: Ένα βιβλίο με ένα μέρος του σώματος στον τίτλο (καρδιά, οστά, δόντια, δέρμα, αίμα, κτλ)

Το «Δέρμα» είναι η τέταρτη περιπέτεια του Τζακ Κάφερι, του ήρωα της σειράς βιβλίων της συγγραφέως Mo Hayder.
Το πτώμα μιας γυναίκας ανακαλύπτεται κοντά στις σιδηροδρομικές γραμμές έξω από το Μπρίστολ. Αρχικά όλα δείχνουν πως πρόκειται για αυτοκτονία, όμως ο Κάφερι διατηρεί τις αμφιβολίες του και ξεκινά τις δικές του έρευνες. Το ένστικτό του τού λέει πως αυτή η υπόθεση συνδέεται με την προηγ��ύμενη που ερευνούσε, κι έτσι αρχίζει να ψάχνει στοιχεία που θα τον οδηγήσουν στην ανακάλυψη του δράστη. Ταυτόχρονα, είναι πεπεισμένος πως το παράξενο πλάσμα που δεν κατόρθωσαν να συλλάβουν, το ‘Τοκολόσε», περιφέρεται βανδαλίζοντας τάφους, βεβηλώνοντας πτώματα και εισβάλλοντας σε σπίτια. Παρόλο που ξέρει πως οι συνάδελφοί του θεωρούν τους ισχυρισμούς του παράλογους, εκείνος συνεχίζει την έρευνα.
Από την άλλη, η Φλι Μάρλι αντιμετωπίζει τα δικά της προβλήματα. Εκτός από τα ζητήματα που αφορούν τη δουλειά της, καλείται να αντιμετωπίσει και την κατάσταση στην οποία ενεπλάκη άθελά της, όταν ο αδελφός της πήρε το δικό της αυτοκίνητο και προκάλεσε ένα ατύχημα. Η Φλι βρίσκεται τώρα με ένα ανεπιθύμητο φορτίο και ένα τεράστιο μυστικό που θα μπορούσε να της κοστίσει όχι μόνο την καριέρα της, αλλά και την ελευθερία της, αν αποκαλυφθεί. Και συνειδητοποιεί πως είναι κάτι που θα πρέπει να επιλύσει μόνη της, μιας και δεν υπάρχει κανένας που θα μπορούσε να εμπιστευτεί ή να ζητήσει τη βοήθειά του. Πόσω μάλλον ο Τζακ Κάφερι, που μοιάζει πελαγωμένος από τις δικές του έγνοιες…
Ουσιαστικά, το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο αποτελεί τη συνέχεια του προηγούμενου, της «Τελετουργίας». Τα γεγονότα και τα πρόσωπα συνδέονται άμεσα με εκείνα του τρίτου βιβλίου της σειράς και τα όσα συνέβησαν πριν από λίγο καιρό συνεχίζουν να επηρεάζουν τις ζωές των ηρώων, σε προσωπικό και επαγγελματικό επίπεδο. Βέβαια, το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο έχει τη δική του ξεχωριστή ταυτότητα, απλά οι εξελίξεις εδώ απορρέουν από όσα έχουν ήδη επηρεάσει την καθημερινότητα και τον ψυχισμό των ηρώων, οι οποίοι προσπαθούν να βρουν απαντήσεις στα ερωτήματά τους και νέες ισορροπίες στη ζωή τους, προκειμένου να προχωρήσουν παρακάτω.
Εκτός από την ‘άτυπη’ συνέχεια της ιστορίας που ξεκίνησε να αφηγείται η Hayder στην «Τελετουργία», ένα άλλο στοιχείο που ενώνει αυτήν και το «Δέρμα» είναι ότι το ύφος της συγγραφέως έχει αλλάξει – φυσικά, όχι σε σημείο να ξενίζει ή να δυσαρεστεί τον αναγνώστη. Η πένα της εξακολουθεί να είναι αιχμηρή, ωμή όπου χρειάζεται, όμως απουσιάζει η τόσο έντονη αποτύπωση εικόνων βίας, όπως στα δύο πρώτα της βιβλία. Η συγγραφέας μοιάζει να είναι πιο προσιτή, πιο ανθρώπινη, και να επενδύει περισσότερο στα ψυχογραφήματα των ηρώων και στην αποτύπωση του ψυχισμού τους, παρά στις περιγραφές σκηνών εγκλημάτων που σου ανακατεύουν το στομάχι. Μοιάζει να ενδιαφέρεται κυρίως για το πώς επιδρούν αυτές οι ειδεχθείς πράξεις στην ψυχολογία τους, παρά στο πώς θα εντυπωθούν αυτές καθ’ αυτές -χάριν γραφής και περιγραφής- στο μυαλό του αναγνώστη. Κάτι που δεν είναι καθόλου κακό, μιας και τελικά τα καταφέρνει μια χαρά. Αντίθετα, δίνει έτσι μια νέα, φρέσκια πνοή στην αφήγησή της και επιχειρεί μια διαφορετική προσέγγιση στους ήρωές της.
Οι οποίοι μοιάζουν πιο ώριμοι, έμπειροι αλλά και ευάλωτοι από ποτέ. Για πρώτη φορά, ο Τζακ Κάφερι μοιάζει να φοβάται· αυτό που δεν μπορεί να πολεμήσει και αυτό που ίσως είναι ανίσχυρος να αντιμετωπίσει. Πολύ πιο ανθρώπινος πλέον, δεν διστάζει να παραδεχτεί πως υπάρχουν πράγματα που δεν περνάει από το χέρι του να διαχειριστεί. Το ίδιο συμβαίνει και με τη Φλι Μάρλι, την πάντοτε αυτάρκη και δυναμική αστυνομικό, που τώρα βρίσκεται να παραπαίει εξαιτίας των συνθηκών. Μόνη, χωρίς καμία βοήθεια από τον άβουλο αδελφό της και την καταπιεστική νύφη της, χωρίς να μπορεί να απευθυνθεί σε φίλους ή συναδέλφους, καλείται να πάρει αποφάσεις και να διαχειριστεί καταστάσεις που μπορεί να έχουν σοβαρές συνέπειες για εκείνη. Συνειδητοποιεί, όπως και ο Κάφερι, πως δεν είναι πάντα εύκολο να είσαι δυνατός κι αποφασιστικός, ιδιαίτερα όταν οι περιστάσεις σε ξεπερνούν.
Αυτό που δεν έχει αλλάξει είναι ο τρόπος γραφής της Hayder· γρήγοροι αφηγηματικοί ρυθμοί, διαρκής παλμός, δυναμική και κοφτερή γλώσσα, ρεαλιστικές περιγραφές, προσεγμένα ψυχογραφήματα, ενδιαφέροντες χαρακτήρες. Μικρές ιστορίες που ξεδιπλώνονται νωχελικά στην αρχή, η καθεμία με τον δικό της ιδιαίτερο τρόπο, για να αποκτήσουν στη συνέχεια δυναμική και να συναντηθούν τελικά σε ένα δυνατό αποκορύφωμα, που θα αποκαλύψει αυτό που τις ένωνε εξαρχής – αλλά και την ταλαντούχα πένα της Hayder, που κατάφερε να συνδυάσει αρμονικά τόσα διαφορετικά κομμάτια, που όμως με την κατάλληλη μαεστρία δημιουργούν μια κοινή εικόνα.
Το «Δέρμα» μπορεί να αρέσει στον αναγνώστη ή να τον ξενίσει· αυτό έχει να κάνει με το προσωπικό κριτήριο του καθενός. Αυτό που είναι αναμφισβήτητο όμως είναι πως, στο τέλος και αυτής της περιπέτειας, οι ήρωες βγαίνουν πιο δυνατοί, πιο σίγουροι. Ίσως όχι τόσο ανακουφισμένοι ή χαρούμενοι όσο θα ήθελαν· όμως με τη γνώση πως επέζησαν από μια ακόμα δύσκολη κατάσταση και πως, ό,τι κι αν τους επιφυλάσσει η επόμενη μέρα, εκείνοι θα το αντιμετωπίσουν. Ίσως γιατί δεν μπορούν να κάνουν διαφορετικά. Δεν μένει λοιπόν παρά να περιμένουμε την επόμενη μέρα -και το επόμενο βιβλίο- για να το διαπιστώσουμε.
Το πτώμα μιας γυναίκας ανακαλύπτεται κοντά στις σιδηροδρομικές γραμμές έξω από το Μπρίστολ. Αρχικά όλα δείχνουν πως πρόκειται για αυτοκτονία, όμως ο Κάφερι διατηρεί τις αμφιβολίες του και ξεκινά τις δικές του έρευνες. Το ένστικτό του τού λέει πως αυτή η υπόθεση συνδέεται με την προηγ��ύμενη που ερευνούσε, κι έτσι αρχίζει να ψάχνει στοιχεία που θα τον οδηγήσουν στην ανακάλυψη του δράστη. Ταυτόχρονα, είναι πεπεισμένος πως το παράξενο πλάσμα που δεν κατόρθωσαν να συλλάβουν, το ‘Τοκολόσε», περιφέρεται βανδαλίζοντας τάφους, βεβηλώνοντας πτώματα και εισβάλλοντας σε σπίτια. Παρόλο που ξέρει πως οι συνάδελφοί του θεωρούν τους ισχυρισμούς του παράλογους, εκείνος συνεχίζει την έρευνα.
Από την άλλη, η Φλι Μάρλι αντιμετωπίζει τα δικά της προβλήματα. Εκτός από τα ζητήματα που αφορούν τη δουλειά της, καλείται να αντιμετωπίσει και την κατάσταση στην οποία ενεπλάκη άθελά της, όταν ο αδελφός της πήρε το δικό της αυτοκίνητο και προκάλεσε ένα ατύχημα. Η Φλι βρίσκεται τώρα με ένα ανεπιθύμητο φορτίο και ένα τεράστιο μυστικό που θα μπορούσε να της κοστίσει όχι μόνο την καριέρα της, αλλά και την ελευθερία της, αν αποκαλυφθεί. Και συνειδητοποιεί πως είναι κάτι που θα πρέπει να επιλύσει μόνη της, μιας και δεν υπάρχει κανένας που θα μπορούσε να εμπιστευτεί ή να ζητήσει τη βοήθειά του. Πόσω μάλλον ο Τζακ Κάφερι, που μοιάζει πελαγωμένος από τις δικές του έγνοιες…
Ουσιαστικά, το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο αποτελεί τη συνέχεια του προηγούμενου, της «Τελετουργίας». Τα γεγονότα και τα πρόσωπα συνδέονται άμεσα με εκείνα του τρίτου βιβλίου της σειράς και τα όσα συνέβησαν πριν από λίγο καιρό συνεχίζουν να επηρεάζουν τις ζωές των ηρώων, σε προσωπικό και επαγγελματικό επίπεδο. Βέβαια, το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο έχει τη δική του ξεχωριστή ταυτότητα, απλά οι εξελίξεις εδώ απορρέουν από όσα έχουν ήδη επηρεάσει την καθημερινότητα και τον ψυχισμό των ηρώων, οι οποίοι προσπαθούν να βρουν απαντήσεις στα ερωτήματά τους και νέες ισορροπίες στη ζωή τους, προκειμένου να προχωρήσουν παρακάτω.
Εκτός από την ‘άτυπη’ συνέχεια της ιστορίας που ξεκίνησε να αφηγείται η Hayder στην «Τελετουργία», ένα άλλο στοιχείο που ενώνει αυτήν και το «Δέρμα» είναι ότι το ύφος της συγγραφέως έχει αλλάξει – φυσικά, όχι σε σημείο να ξενίζει ή να δυσαρεστεί τον αναγνώστη. Η πένα της εξακολουθεί να είναι αιχμηρή, ωμή όπου χρειάζεται, όμως απουσιάζει η τόσο έντονη αποτύπωση εικόνων βίας, όπως στα δύο πρώτα της βιβλία. My least favourite of the Jack Caffery series so far. Thus, this three stars are, in fact, two and a half rounded up.
'Skin' takes place a few days after the events described in the previous book, 'Ritual'. It's dark and macabre, as a Mo Hayder book it's supposed to be, but this time it didn't feel as usual.
I had some difficulties in getting into the story. For me, the beginning of this book is a bit too jumbled for my taste, and it wasn't easy to follow. Again, some of my difficulties had to do with police-related expressions the author uses to describe different positions in the force, or weapons they use, everything abbreviated, that I don't know what they are supposed to mean.
Then, there was a je ne sais quois in Phoebe 'Flea' Marley's story that made me frown all the time. The way she deals with her younger brother Thom is just... Come on! The guy doesn't take responsibility for none of his acts, and it has to be Flea to come all the time and clean after his mess?! I can't say I liked Flea that much in this book.
As for Caffery, he looks a bit crazy this time. Or even crazier, since what happened in 'Ritual' has left some kind of trauma, and now the man can't stop looking over his shoulder. I don't really like him, as a character, but he was better than Flea in this book.
Regarding the crimes described, yes, they were gruesome, but there wasn't that "I wonder who the crazy perpetrator is"-feeling, because as soon as the person is presented to us, we know we have the killer. It's not what I would call exciting.
In fact, to be honest, there's nothing really exciting about this book. I was thinking of giving it only two stars, but, because it reads quite well, I've decided to give and extra half star.
Let's hope the next book on this series, 'Gone', is better.

Anyone who's read my reviews on Birdman and The Treatment knows I have a soft spot for Mo Hayder.
Even though she let me down in Ritual by veering away from Caffrey's storyline regarding his brother, I cannot forget how those first two novels hit me like a bag of bricks. In Ritual, she introduced a new character, Flea, and I wasn't keen on her. I was much too resentful of where the storyline was going so there was no way she was going to win me over.
Skin is pretty much a continuation of Ritual. I knew that going in, and normally that would have discouraged me. But when she keeps putting more books out in the series to higher ratings, I can't resist the chance of hitting another novel that would match the intensity of the first two.
Well, I'm happy to report that not only was Skin a good read, but I was able to swallow my resentment and warm up to Flea. This was no Birdman or The Treatment, but it's still Mo Hayder. Her pacing in this novel was very good, where the alternating storylines made for compulsive reading.
I just hope that with the next novel, Gone, she places more focus on Caffrey and less (or totally eliminate) The Walking Man. I couldn't care less for him. Or the whole African mojo/jojo story arc for that matter.
Mildly recommended in anticipation of better things to come...

Another captivating thriller set in Avon and Somerset, as Cafferty and Flea struggle with their own dark secrets whilst 'suicides' start turning up with bits of skin missing. This book follows on a day after the last book Ritual finished. The Walking Man and the Tokoloshe are hovering around the scenes again. Another great episode of the Cafferty series sees Cafferty hover over the line of good and evil. 7 out of 12.

My mind tended to wander a little while reading this book. I think it was partly due to the writing itself. There were some paragraphs that I couldn't understand, had to re-read, look up British slang, or just move on. The writing seemed erratic and disjointed, so it confused me a little, then later I got the gist. This book picks up a week after the previous book, Ritual, ends, and it leaves us with a cliffhanger. The book entails Caffery and Flea doing their things, suicides, murders, and one sick doctor. I don't really like what either of the protagonists do in this book. I hope the next one is better.

Η Mo Hayder είναι μία συγγραφέας που τα τελευταία χρόνια έχει συζητηθεί όσο λίγοι ομότεχνοί της. Ο ιδιαίτερος τρόπος γραφής της, αλλά και η ακόμα πιο ιδιαίτερη προσέγγιση των ιστοριών που αφηγείται, με την gore γοτθική αισθητική, έχουν διχάσει ουκ ολίγες φορές του αναγνώστες που είτε την λάτρεψαν για τον ρεαλισμό της, είτε την μίσησαν γι' αυτόν, αφού δεν ήταν σε θέση να διαχειριστούν μια τόσο ωμή αντιμετώπιση καταστάσεων, ειδικά όταν αυτές αφορούσαν παιδιά. Με την "Τελετουργία", που κυκλοφόρησε πέρσι στη χώρα μας -αν και στο εξωτερικό είχε πρωτοκυκλοφορήσει το 2009, η Hayder φάνηκε να επιχειρεί μια στροφή στην συγγραφική της καριέρα, πράγμα που επιβεβαιώνεται με "Το Δέρμα" που κυκλοφόρησε πριν από λίγες ημέρες από τις εκδόσεις Διόπτρα. Κι αν θέλετε την άποψή μου, πολύ σοφή η επιλογή της αυτή, αφού ακόμα κι αν ξενίσει κάποιους αναγνώστες της, δεν επιτρέπει να την καθορίσει καμία ταμπέλα.
Αφετηρία της ιστορίας μας, και αυτή τη φορά, η ανακάλυψη του πτώματος μιας νέας γυναίκας, κοντά στις σιδηροδρομικές γραμμές έξω από το Μπρίστολ. Όλα τα στοιχεία μαρτυρούν πως πρόκε��ται για αυτοκτονία, αφού το πτώμα δεν φέρει σημάδια κακοποίησης, ενώ κοντά σε αυτό βρέθηκε και ο σουγιάς που φαίνεται να έκοψε τις φλέβες της. Όμως, ο επιθεωρητής Τζακ Κάφερι, σαν από ένστικτο, έχει τις αμφιβολίες του για το κατά πόσο τα πράγματα είναι όπως δείχνουν κι έτσι αρχίζει τις έρευνες προσπαθώντας ν' ανακαλύψει τι πραγματικά συνέβη, έχοντας βαθιά μέσα του την αίσθηση πως η υπόθεση αυτή σχετίζεται με την προηγούμενη που είχε αναλάβει. την ίδια ώρα που κάποιος βανδαλίζει τάφους. Παράλληλα, η δύτης της αστυνομίας Φλι Μάρλι, προσπαθεί ν' αφήσει πίσω της το πρόσφατο τρομακτικό παρελθόν της, ενώ αναρωτιέται αν μπορεί η σχέση της με τον Κάφερι να προχωρήσει με τον οποιονδήποτε τρόπο.
Όπως προανέφερα, η Hayder, από την "Τελετουργία" ακόμα, είχε αρχίσει κάποιες αλλαγές στον τρόπο προσέγγισης των ιστοριών της, αλλά και στο πως θα τις αφηγηθεί. Χωρίς να εγκαταλείπει πλήρως τον ωμό ρεαλισμό της, οι λεπτομέρειες που αφορούν τα εγκλήματα που έρχονται στο μικροσκόπιό της, είναι λιγότερο έντονες και άγριες, με την ίδια να δίνει την αίσθηση πως δεν θέλει να ταυτιστεί απόλυτα με το gore στοιχείο, αλλά πως μέσω αυτού θέλει να φτάσει στα βαθύτερα σημεία της ανθρώπινης συνείδησης και ενσυναίσθησης, είτε αυτή εκδηλώνεται με σωστό είτε με λάθος τρόπο. Ουσιαστικά, στο "Δέρμα", φαίνεται να εστιάζει περισσότερο στη ανθρώπινη πτυχή της ιστορίας και όχι στο έγκλημα αυτό καθ' αυτό, και παρά που η ιστορία της είναι για μία ακόμα φορά ψυχρή και σκληρή, διασπάται σε πολλές μικρότερες υποϊστορίες, το πάντρεμα των οποίων οδηγεί σε μια εσωτερική, ηθική πάλη που δεν αφορά μόνο τους εμπλεκόμενους σε αυτές, αλλά κι εμάς ως αναγνώστες.
Επί της ουσίας, "Το δέρμα" είναι μια άτυπη συνέχεια της "Τελετουργίας", όχι μόνο επειδή η Φλι συμμετέχει ξανά σ' αυτήν, αλλά γιατί οι δύο ιστορίες συνδέονται μ' έναν τρόπο που δεν μπορούμε να φανταστούμε όταν ξεκινάμε την ανάγνωσή της, παρά που εμπιστευόμαστε το ένστικτο του Κάφερι ο οποίος, από την αρχή κιόλας της αφήγησης, μοιράζεται μαζί μας τις σκέψεις του και στη συνέχεια, τους φόβους του. Ναι, είναι η πρώτη φορά που βλέπουμε τον Κάφερι να βιώνει το αίσθημα του φόβου, γεγονός που τον καθιστά πιο ανθρώπινο και οικείο στα μάτια μας, αποδεικνύοντάς μας πως έχει πολύ περισσότερες πλευρές απ' αυτές που αρχικά πιστεύαμε, πράγμα συναρπαστικό και εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρον από ψυχογραφικής προσέγγισης και ανάλυσης χαρακτήρα. Όμως, και η εξέλιξη της Φλι είναι εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσα, με την παρουσία του αδερφού της και της συντρόφου του να παίζουν καθοριστικό ρόλο, όχι μόνο στις εξελίξεις, αλλά και στην αποτύπωση της δικής της ψυχοσύνθεσης, καθώς και στην αλληλεπίδρασή της με τον Κάφερι, ένα από τα πλέον ενδιαφέροντα δίδυμα που έχουμε συναντήσει έως τώρα στην κατηγορία του αστυνομικού μυθιστορήματος.
Αυτό που πρέπει, όμως, ν' αναγνωρίσουμε στη Hayder, εκτός όλων των άλλων, είναι η μοναδική ικανότητά της να διασπά την προσοχή μας, να μας αποπροσανατολίζει και, τελικά, να μας προσφέρει την ανατροπή, το στοιχείο εκείνο της έκπληξης που πάντα προσθέτει πόντους σ' ένα ανάγνωσμα του είδους. Οι προοπτικές εξέλιξης της ιστορίας αυτής είναι τόσες πολλές και διασπασμένες με τέτοιο τρόπο, που τίποτα δεν αποκλείεται και όλα τα σενάρια είναι πιθανά. Όμως, αυτό που εγώ κρατάω, είναι ο τρόπος με τον οποίο η συγγραφέας προσεγγίζει έννοιες όπως η δικαιοσύνη και η ηθική, που μπορεί μεν να βασίζονται σε κάποιες γενικές, υποκειμενικές ιδέες, ωστόσο, στο πρακτικό τους σκέλος, υπάγονται σε καθαρά αντικειμενικές απόψεις, θεωρίες, αξίες. Κι εδώ είναι που αναρωτιέσαι, ποιος πραγματικά είναι ο κακός της ιστορίας αυτής; Πώς μπορείς ν' αποφασίσεις όταν οι ηθικές γραμμές, εκτός από εξαιρετικά λεπτές, είναι τόσο πολύ θολές που όλα είναι αποδεκτά; Αυτό είναι, όμως, είναι κάτι που θα πρέπει ν' απαντήσετε μόνοι σας.
Αφετηρία της ιστορίας μας, και αυτή τη φορά, η ανακάλυψη του πτώματος μιας νέας γυναίκας, κοντά στις σιδηροδρομικές γραμμές έξω από το Μπρίστολ. Όλα τα στοιχεία μαρτυρούν πως πρόκε��ται για αυτοκτονία, αφού το πτώμα δεν φέρει σημάδια κακοποίησης, ενώ κοντά σε αυτό βρέθηκε και ο σουγιάς που φαίνεται να έκοψε τις φλέβες της. Όμως, ο επιθεωρητής Τζακ Κάφερι, σαν από ένστικτο, έχει τις αμφιβολίες του για το κατά πόσο τα πράγματα είναι όπως δείχνουν κι έτσι αρχίζει τις έρευνες προσπαθώντας ν' ανακαλύψει τι πραγματικά συνέβη, έχοντας βαθιά μέσα του την αίσθηση πως η υπόθεση αυτή σχετίζεται με την προηγούμενη που είχε αναλάβει. την ίδια ώρα που κάποιος βανδαλίζει τάφους. Παράλληλα, η δύτης της αστυνομίας Φλι Μάρλι, προσπαθεί ν' αφήσει πίσω της το πρόσφατο τρομακτικό παρελθόν της, ενώ αναρωτιέται αν μπορεί η σχέση της με τον Κάφερι να προχωρήσει με τον οποιονδήποτε τρόπο.
Όπως προανέφερα, η Hayder, από την "Τελετουργία" ακόμα, είχε αρχίσει κάποιες αλλαγές στον τρόπο προσέγγισης των ιστοριών της, αλλά και στο πως θα τις αφηγηθεί. Χωρίς να εγκαταλείπει πλήρως τον ωμό ρεαλισμό της, οι λεπτομέρειες που αφορούν τα εγκλήματα που έρχονται στο μικροσκόπιό της, είναι λιγότερο έντονες και άγριες, με την ίδια να δίνει την αίσθηση πως δεν θέλει να ταυτιστεί απόλυτα με το gore στοιχείο, αλλά πως μέσω αυτού θέλει να φτάσει στα βαθύτερα σημεία της ανθρώπινης συνείδησης και ενσυναίσθησης, είτε αυτή εκδηλώνεται με σωστό είτε με λάθος τρόπο. Ουσιαστικά, στο "Δέρμα", φαίνεται να εστιάζει περισσότερο στη ανθρώπινη πτυχή της ιστορίας και όχι στο έγκλημα αυτό καθ' αυτό, και παρά που η ιστορία της είναι για μία ακόμα φορά ψυχρή και σκληρή, διασπάται σε πολλές μικρότερες υποϊστορίες, το πάντρεμα των οποίων οδηγεί σε μια εσωτερική, ηθική πάλη που δεν αφορά μόνο τους εμπλεκόμενους σε αυτές, αλλά κι εμάς ως αναγνώστες.
Επί της ουσίας, "Το δέρμα" είναι μια άτυπη συνέχεια της "Τελετουργίας", όχι μόνο επειδή η Φλι συμμετέχει ξανά σ' αυτήν, αλλά γιατί οι δύο ιστορίες συνδέονται μ' έναν τρόπο που δεν μπορούμε να φανταστούμε όταν ξεκινάμε την ανάγνωσή της, παρά που εμπιστευόμαστε το ένστικτο του Κάφερι ο οποίος, από την αρχή κιόλας της αφήγησης, μοιράζεται μαζί μας τις σκέψεις του και στη συνέχεια, τους φόβους του. Ναι, είναι η πρώτη φορά που βλέπουμε τον Κάφερι να βιώνει το αίσθημα του φόβου, γεγονός που τον καθιστά πιο ανθρώπινο και οικείο στα μάτια μας, αποδεικνύοντάς μας πως έχει πολύ περισσότερες πλευρές απ' αυτές που αρχικά πιστεύαμε, πράγμα συναρπαστικό και εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρον από ψυχογραφικής προσέγγισης και ανάλυσης χαρακτήρα. Όμως, και η εξέλιξη της Φλι είναι εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσα, με την παρουσία του αδερφού της και της συντρόφου του να παίζουν καθοριστικό ρόλο, όχι μόνο στις εξελίξεις, αλλά και στην αποτύπωση της δικής της ψυχοσύνθεσης, καθώς και στην αλληλεπίδρασή της με τον Κάφερι, ένα από τα πλέον ενδιαφέροντα δίδυμα που έχουμε συναντήσει έως τώρα στην κατηγορία του αστυνομικού μυθιστορήματος.
Αυτό που πρέπει, όμως, ν' αναγνωρίσουμε στη Hayder, εκτός όλων των άλλων, είναι η μοναδική ικανότητά της να διασπά την προσοχή μας, να μας αποπροσανατολίζει και, τελικά, να μας προσφέρει την ανατροπή, το στοιχείο εκείνο της έκπληξης που πάντα προσθέτει πόντους σ' ένα ανάγνωσμα του είδους. Οι προοπτικές εξέλιξης της ιστορίας αυτής είναι τόσες πολλές και διασπασμένες με τέτοιο τρόπο, που τίποτα δεν αποκλείεται και όλα τα σενάρια είναι πιθανά. Όμως, αυτό που εγώ κρατάω, είναι ο τρόπος με τον οποίο η συγγραφέας προσεγγίζει έννοιες όπως η δικαιοσύνη και η ηθική, που μπορεί μεν να βασίζονται σε κάποιες γενικές, υποκειμενικές ιδέες, ωστόσο, στο πρακτικό τους σκέλος, υπάγονται σε καθαρά αντικειμενικές απόψεις, θεωρίες, αξίες. Κι εδώ είναι που αναρωτιέσαι, ποιος πραγματικά είναι ο κακός της ιστορίας αυτής; Πώς μπορείς ν' αποφασίσεις όταν οι ηθικές γραμμές, εκτός από εξαιρετικά λεπτές, είναι τόσο πολύ θολές που όλα είναι αποδεκτά; Αυτό είναι, όμως, είναι κάτι που θα πρέπει ν' απαντήσετε μόνοι σας.

Another good book in this series. Not nearly as gory and twisted as the first two. Good suspense though, especially near the end. Getting used to two different protagonists now.

TO ΔΕΡΜΑ, της Mo Hayder
Στο νέο αυτό βιβλίο της Χέιντερ, διαπιστώνουμε ότι πρόκειται για μια, ούτε λίγο ούτε πολύ συνέχεια του προηγούμενου βιβλίου της με τίτλο “Η Τελετουργία”. Όπως και στην Τελετουργία, συναντάμε τον ντετέκτιβ επιθεωρητή Τζάκ Κάφερι αλλά και την αστυνομικό/δύτη Φλι Μάρλεϊ, παρέα με τις συγκλίνουσες γραμμές της ιστορίας του καθενός τους. Η πλοκή είναι διασπασμένη σε επιμέρους τομείς, που στο τέλος όμως της ημέρας, η δυνατή πένα της συγγραφέα τους πλέκει μαζί σε μια όμορφη και καλοδουλεμένη ιστορία.
Και σε αυτό το βιβλίο, όπως και στην Τελετουργία, βλέπουμε μια διαφορετική Hayder. Εξακολουθεί να περιγράφει τα εγκλήματα με το γνωστό οξύ και ωμό της τρόπο, μόνο που τώρα σαν κάτι να έχει αλλάξει. Έχει γίνει πιο ανθρώπινη, πιο προσιτή. Η ιστορία είναι αναμφισβήτητα ψυχρή και ειδεχθής, αλλά εστιάζει περισσότερο στην ανθρώπινη πτυχή του εγκλήματος και τα αποτελέσματα που βλέπουμε ακόμη και σε εμάς τους ίδιους. Οι ηθικές γραμμές είναι θολές και παρεισφρέουν η μια στην άλλη κι ο αναγνώστης είναι αυτός που καλείται για να αποφασίσει ποιος είναι ο κακός και ποιος όχι.
Πριν αγοράσω το βιβλίο είχα διαβάσει κάποιες κριτικές σε sites του εξωτερικού και είδα ότι κάποιοι το θεωρούν το χειρότερό της μέχρι τώρα. Προσωπικά έχω κάθετα αντίθετη άποψη. Μετά το Κελάηδισμα, το οποίο θεωρώ ανεπανάληπτο και θα είναι το αγαπημένο μου πάντα, Το Δέρμα είναι το αμέσως επόμενο στην προτίμησή μου. Μου αρέσει αυτή η αλλαγή της συγγραφέως και μου έχει ταιριάξει.

Unfortunately, there were too many 'I can't exactly believe this would really happen' moments in this book. I have enjoyed Hayder's books in the past and given them high ratings, but this one didn't deliver as well as her previous books in this series.

A decomposing body ticks like a clock in this unflinching mystery destined to catch even the sharpest reader off guard.
Plot line one of this brilliant forensic procedural finds DI Jack Caffery investigating apparent suicides with tufts of hair shaved off their heads. In plot two, police recovery diver Flea’s (short for Pheobe), tries to help her drunk brother and pretends to have been driving a car she wasn't. For plot three, cryptic chapters spotlight a man demonstrating his vast knowledge of removing human skin. Jack searches for a killer, Flea's cover-up becomes as stable as a clock in a Dali painting and a psychopath with no limits blows our minds as the story intersects in chilling fashion.
The opening of Skin overlaps with events from the previous book in this series, Ritual. Using a slick parallel narrative technique, Hayder includes many pieces of the past book into this one. Still, Skin makes for an incredibly powerful standalone. As our protagonists wade deeper into grave danger their human failings become more obvious. And we can't help but root for them harder with every flaw revealed.
This is brilliant stuff and highly recommended. Like all Hayder, not for the squeamish.

فكرة الرواية في البداية كانت مشوقة وبها ربط بمحتوى الروايات السابقة في السلسلة ولكن الأحداث في أجزاء في هذه الرواية ليست مترابطة والنهاية غير واضحة بالنسبة لي.

Jag hade turen att läsa Hud direkt efter att ha läst Ritual vilket gjorde att det kändes som om jag läste bara en bok, som vart uppdelad i två böcker då handlingen i Hud tar vid i stor sett direkt efter handlingen i Ritual slutar. Då jag tyckte att Ritual slutad med några lösa trådar så var jag väldigt nöjd över detta.
Jack Caffery är inte helt övertygad om att fallet från föregående bok är helt avklarat. Han har en känsla av ett någon slapp undan, någon som förföljer honom. Frågan är varför? Och först tror han att de besynnerliga självmordet som han undersöker har med morden från föregående fall att göra. Eller rättare sagt från personen som kom undan. Men det är bara han som är misstänksam och tror att det kan rör sig om ett mord och inte ett självmord. Under tiden har Flea Marley egna problem med en överraskning som hennes bror Thom har lämnat bak i hennes bil.
Som med föregående bok så är denna bok svår att sluta läsa. Handlingen är intensiv och fängslande och både Fleas personliga problem och Jacks undersökning är intressanta att följa. Jag var så inne i handlingen att jag nästan såg rött när Thom och hans flickvän Mandy började ställa till problem för Flea. Jag hoppas innerligt att de får vad de förtjänar i någon kommande bok. Maken till vedervärdiga personer är det svårt att finna.
Hud är en mycket bra bok och slutet var både perfekt och frustrerande. Frustrerande för att jag nu bara måste ha fortsättningen!

I was lucky to have read Ritual right before I read Skin because that made it feel like I was only reading one book that was split into two books since the story in Skin feels like a continuation from Ritual. And, since I felt that Ritual ended was some questions left to answer was this especially satisfying.
Jack Caffery is not convinced that the case from the previous book is completely over. He has a feeling that someone got away, and that person is stalking him. And, the question is why? He also thinks that the suicide that he is investigating has something to do with the murder cases from the previous case. Or rather the person that got away. But, he is the only one that is suspicious about it. Meanwhile, Flea Marley has to deal with her own personal problem, a surprise that her brother Thom left back in her car.
Like the previous book was this one hard to put down. The story is fascinating and intensive and both Flea's personal problem and Jack's investigation are interesting to follow. I was so caught up with the story that I almost exploded with anger when Thom and his girlfriend Mandy started to make trouble for Flea. I hope they get what they deserve in the future. I loathe them both!
Skin is a very good book, and the ending was both perfect and frustrating to read. Frustrating because I now must have the next book soon!

Reason for Reading: Next in the series and Mo Hayder is my favourite author in the world! (at the moment)
Summary: A suicide is found and everything points to case closed, though the ex-husband does show concern that things don't seem right. When another suicide with the same MO shows up Jack Caffery asks to be put on the case as he has found some connections between the two. At the same time celebrity rich girl, Misty Kitson, has simply vanished and police diver Flea Marley has been called in to search a few lakes and a quarry. Flea and Jack do not work together in this novel, they are off on their own this time. Jack's case takes him to a very strange human being and a sick prolific serial killer while Flea is hit out of the blue by a family problem that she must deal with and it is something that will change her life forever.
Comments: First off the mystery story was quite good, it did lack Hayder's trademark gruesomeness and weirdness which I've come to expect but still a strange enough case to be worthy of Hayder's talent. Flea's story, however, is the one that gets the reader's blood thumping. Not exactly a mystery as we learn the facts as quickly as Flea does but more pure thriller. What Hayder has done in this book is examine her main characters personalities and moral boundaries. From earlier books we know what Jack is capable of, but he has shown determinedly to prove himself the better man he knows he can be. Flea we've only seen from one side, this novel tests her boundaries and between them both Mo Hayder has created two very unique main character detectives for a police procedural series. Are they likable? "Can" they be likable? What does it say about the reader if he does like them? Personally, I did not like Jack the first time I met him in "Birdman" but I grew to like him quite quickly. At this time I do still like both Flea and Jack but with caveats and I must see what the next book brings before I make any final decisions. But whether I like them or not as persons, I love them as the unique, distinct detective team in Hayder's twisted thrillers with plots that no one else could write.

Skin by Mo Hayder is one of the Walking Man novels and, as such, it features old friends including Jack Caffery, a tough and very clever member of the Bath/Bristol Police Major Case Unit as well as Flea Marley, the Sergeant in charge of that police department's underwater recovery team. Both of these characters make interesting additions to the book as both have significant problems in their past as well as troubling current issues, so they are not one dimensional.
As is the case with most of Hayder's stories, the plot is labyrinthine and it takes a bit to figure out where it is going and, once you have that figured out, you should be prepared to be surprised again. I was kept engaged throughout the book but not to the extent that I have been with Hayder's previous works. I suspect that this is because I read too many of her books, including all of the Walking Man series, in too short a period.
Interestingly enough, the "villain" plays a fairly minor role in the book as it focuses on Caffery and Marley to a great degree. In a sense, there are two distinct stories going on simultaneously and, as you might suspect, it is not until the end of the book that they are tied together, if only in the most tangential manner.
I have rated this book four stars because I think I would have enjoyed it immensely had I not read so many of Hayder's books in such a short period. If you choose to read the Walking Man series, I would recommend that you read it in order: 1. Ritual 2. Skin 3. Gone. I read Gone first and felt that they detracted by the others.

Skin immediately proves Mo Hayder to be even more ambitious than I thought. Not so much the fourth book in the Jack Caffery series as an immediate sequel to the third book, Ritual, what we have here is a panoramic, widescreen mystery told on a huge tapestry. The book picks up a week after the end of Ritual and once again stars Caffery and diver "Flea" Marley, only this time it keeps them apart for much of the story as they wrestle with two very different kinds of fallout from the events that occurred in the previous book. There's all the usual stuff that makes Hayder's work so compelling – a twisted crime at the heart of the plot, pitch-black humor, morally ambiguous protagonists – but as I read this one it struck me that one thing Hayder does so well in these last two books is to move the action out of London and into the rural corners of Southwest England between Bath and Bristol. It's out here that she's able to plumb some increasingly creepy depths, playing with the darkness that lurks in the forests and quarries instead of the urban streets and alleys that are often the setting of contemporary mysteries. There's no good reason I can think of why Hayder's work isn't better known in this country.

Είναι άρρυθμο και παραπαίει ανάμεσα σε αρκετές διαφορετικές υποθέσεις εργασίας. Απ’ την άλλη δίνονται λεπτομέρειες για την ανθρώπινη υπόσταση των χαρακτήρων, ρεαλιστικές. Παρότι, τον ίδιο τον Κάφερι τον απλοποιεί και κατά κάποιο τρόπο τον ‘’κλισεδοποιεί’’. Η δε ύπαρξη του Πλανόβιου και οι συναντήσεις μαζί του φέρνουν κάτι απ’ το άρωμα του Κόνολυ. Αυτή η εντύπωση ενισχύεται και απ’ τη στιχομυθία, τον τρόπο ένταξης και την ατμόσφαιρα που αφορά το Τοκολόσε.
Στα πλην η χάρτινη απεικόνιση των συναισθημάτων, αλλά στα συν η διάσταση της σχέσης Μάντι – Τομ. Στα συν επίσης, οι πειστικοί κι αληθοφανείς διάλογοι κι ότι οι υποθέσεις εργασίας μεμονωμένα δεν είναι κακές κι έχουν μάλιστα ωραίο φινίρισμα.
Το βράδυ της Παρασκευής και το σούρουπο του Σαββάτου κύλησαν ευχάριστα κι ο ρυθμός ήταν γρήγορος. Του ταιριάζουν οι Opeth χαμηλά και ένα μπολάκι με κάσιους, αμύγδαλα και πίνατς, βγαλμένο απ’ ευθείας απ’ την κατάψυξη.
2.5 με πτωτική τάση. Ελπίζω το επόμενο να είναι ανώτερο, εφάμιλλο των Τόκυο και Κελάηδισμα.

Oh dear..... I don't seem to be doing very well with books at the moment 🙄. I know that I'm a fairly harsh critic and I rarely give five stars unless I LOVE a book..... But this is getting silly. Another 1* review.
Enjoyed the last book I read of Mo's but this wasn't a patch on that. Found the start quite gripping, but for me, it gradually went on a downward spiral.

Αν εξαιρέσεις πως θα πρέπει να έχεις διαβάσει πρώτα το προηγούμενο και καπάκι το επόμενο, και πως ο βασικός δολοφόνος είναι ασήμαντος σε σχέση με τα ζόρια που τραβάνε η Φλι και ο Καφερι είναι μια χαρά ψυχολογικό αστυνομικο

Το πτώμα μιας νεαρής γυναίκας εντοπίζεται κοντά στις σιδηροδρομικές ράγες. Όλα δείχνουν πως πρόκειται για αυτοκτονία, εφόσον δίπλα της βρίσκονται ένα κουτί χάπια, ένα σημείωμα αυτοκτονίας και ένας σουγιάς με τον οποίο θεωρητικά έκοψε τις φλέβες της. Μήπως όμως τα πράγματα δεν είναι όπως φαίνονται;
Ο επιθεωρητής Τζακ Κάφερι, που έχει αναλάβει την υπόθεση, έχει τις αμφιβολίες του. Όλα τα στοιχεία που συγκέντρωσε δείχνουν πως η συγκεκριμένη υπόθεση συνδέεται άρρηκτα με την προηγούμενη που ερευνούσε. Πλέον είναι 100% σίγουρος πως το «Τοκολόσε», το αλλόκοτο πλάσμα που δεν μπόρεσαν με την Φλι Μάρλι να συλλάβουν, τρυπώνει αθόρυβα σε σπίτια, ανοίγει τάφους και κόβει μαλλιά από τα πτώματα. Για ποιο λόγο το κάνει; Ο Τζακ για πρώτη φορά εδώ και καιρό φοβάται…
Την ίδια ώρα, η Φλι έρχεται αντιμέτωπη με μια φρικτή προσωπική κατάσταση, η οποία αν έρθει στο φως της δημοσιότητας θα της κοστίσει τόσο την καριέρα της όσο και της ελευθερία της. Δεν μπορεί να ζητήσει βοήθεια από κανέναν. Είναι μόνη της, στο χείλος του γκρεμού. Πρέπει να βρει τη λύση και μάλιστα πολύ γρήγορα. Ο χρόνος δεν είναι με το μέρος της και μετρά αντίστροφα.
«Το δέρμα» είναι το 4ο βιβλίο της σειράς με πρωταγωνιστή τον επιθεωρητή Τζακ Κάφερι. Η συγγραφέας με τα δυο πρώτα της βιβλία («Το φονικό κελάηδισμα» και «Η σιωπή των δέντρων») με κέρδισε σαν αναγνώστρια, ενώ αντίθετα με το 3οτης βιβλίο, «Η τελετουργία», με απογοήτευσε οικτρά. Κατακόρυφη πτώση, η οποία και συνεχίζεται και με αυτό το βιβλίο που αποτελεί συνέχεια της «Τελετουργίας». Σαφώς είναι πολύ καλύτερο, παρόλα αυτά δεν με κέρδισε. Ever since I discovered Mo Hayder last year, I became quite a fan of her writing, especially the books about inspector Caffery. They were exciting, nervewrecking and gross. The last Caffery I've read, Ritual, brought a really dark undertone to it all, dealing with the African Muti and Tokoloshe. I was thrilled to know that all of that would continue in Skin, as would Flea Marley return.
Alas, this turned out to be everything I hoped it wouldn't be. A not so great sequel.
The plot seems interesting at first, judging by the blurb. A serial killer who skins animals as well as humans. This would become another gross read like Birdman and The Treatment. The skinning, however, is kept to a bare minimum, and apart from a dog and a rabbit, you can take that quite literally.
The whole reason behind the skinning and killing that did happen, escaped me. I never got the satisfying explanation her other books had. Too bad, cause there is quite some potential here.
The search for the killer is also a turn-off. It's all dark until one connection between two victims is made and from there on, it's obvious whodunnit. Even then remains the question, why skin -take a lil' bit of skin- them? It's actually not until Caffery enters the house of the killer that we know he 'skinned' them.
Then there is Flea Marley. In Ritual, she was a pretty cool sidekick to Caffery, but they barely crossed paths whatsoever here. She was completely minding her own business here. That business made her become someone completely different. Not the likeable Flea from Ritual but rather an annoying character who happens to enter the main storyline way too much. Because of all the drama going on in her own personal life, she chooses to go against the law several times, which made her act out of character, ot so I think.
Everything in this book takes place about a week after the events in Ritual, so the Tokoloshe-stuff is all quite fresh. Where in Ritual everything about this creature was wrapped in mist, here things were revealed a bit more. Even though it was an interesting thing in Ritual, and fitted nicely in the bigger picture, I felt that he was kept around just to make things a bit easier for Caffery and Flea.
At the end, the story is clealy not finished, so I truly hope Hayder picks up her game and delivers again, cause I'd hate to see the storyline lead out in Ritual shrivel down to this and less.

This is a brilliant addition to the Jack Caffery series, if only for all the wrong reasons.
In terms of the grand storyline across the series this is a really important book. I adored where everything was heading. In fact, this book turned my view of Flea completely around – in Ritual I had hated her character yet in Skin I realised just how brilliant she actually is. So yeah, this is a wonderful book for where the rest of the series is heading and brings together so many different elements that you want to find out more about.
That being said, I felt as though the individual crime of this book took a backseat. I wanted more about that aspect of the story, as I felt as though we did not enter it at the depth we usually do. As always we’re given an interesting crime but due to the fact that so much is going on in preparation for the rest of the series, along with bringing in things from prior books, it is not executed as well as it could have been. I simply wish we’d headed deeper into that world and it hadn’t felt as though it was pushed completely aside.
As a whole I love where this book sends us but I felt as though some aspects were rather lacking.

Нов автор, когото ще следя с интерес! Умее да заплита сюжета подобно на Коуди Макфейдън и Майк Оумър. Героите са сложни образи, действието препуска бързо. На места губех нишката, но след това всичко ставаше ясно. Действията на главния герой в края на историята оставят някои въпроси без отговори, което ме кара да съм любопитна.
