This is a follow up book for My life in China and America by Yung Wing. You may already know that Yung Wing was the first Chinese citizen who got an American college degree (Yale). His biggest contribution was that he initiated the Chinese Educational Mission Program: let a group of 120 Chinese boys (average age 12) be educated in the United States. Lee was one of the first group of Chinese boys who participated in this program.

This book is the first English book (published in 1887) to have been published in the US by an Asian author. Lee pioneered the introduction of the real China to the world, challenging some stereotyped opinions about China held by the Western world at that time.

This book has 2 parts. The first part (chapter I - IX) introduced the basic life of Chinese people around 150 years ago, including Chinese house, eating, girls' life, school, religion, etc. It should be interesting to not only Americans but also modern Chinese people to read, as the Chinese life described in the book was during the last Chinese imperial dynasty, the Qing Dynasty. This was a time before China was influenced by Western civilization, and also before the Chinese 1911 Revolution, which marked the end of China's last imperial dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China.

In the second part (chapter X - XII), Lee left his hometown Guangdong, and went to Shanghai to attend the preparatory school for studying abroad. And then he finally started his brand new life in the US.

In Lee’s career, he gave fabulous speeches and lectures about Chinese culture to Americans. He fought very hard for the rights of Chinese people. He improved understanding between Americans and Chinese. He was a remarkable and influential person.
