February 19, 2024this is not the kind of book that you rate on any meaningful scale, but i will say i had a rollicking time answering questions such as: what the hell is an amish romance like? will it be weird about women? how poorly written will it be? will it be weird about christianity? will the characters behave at all like real actual people? will i want to write an essay about cultural values as revealed in mass market romance novels? answer key: something so silly, yes, yes, yes, no, yes.

Oh my stars, y’all, it’s been too long since we left off with the Schroder sisters of Burr Oak, Texas, and I am SO glad we are back! In Bonding Over the Amish Baby, author Pamela Desmond Wright reintroduces us to Rebecca Schroder, a kind and pretty young Amish woman who battles the Lord over her self worth since her fiancé dumped her awhile back.
Dr. Caleb Sutter finds himself stuck in town after crashing his car into Rebecca’s family’s fencing. But is he really stuck? Or could this be the time he needs to pay attention to the Lord’s love and grace?
Invited to stay at the Wyse/Schroder home while his car is repaired, Rebecca and Caleb find themselves as temporary guardians to an abandoned baby boy after Caleb assists the town doc in the little “boppli’s” birth.
What neither expected was their attraction to one another, but it is impossible when Rebecca is Amish and Caleb is an Englisher, right? Well, Luke 1:37 says, “For with God, nothing will be impossible.”
Readers, there are some errors in this book. Wonky margins and a few grammatical errors. THIS IS NOT the author’s fault! The publisher sent the wrong file to press. Believe me, I can promise you won’t even notice the errors because you will be utterly engrossed in this sweet and tender story. I read it in one day. Get the book and read it…stat!

NOTE ➡️ Any formatting (margin errors) or grammatical errors were beyond the control of the author. Due to a miscommunication, this went to print before final editing was completed. These do not, in any way, affect the story or its progression. I barely noticed anything as I’ve seen other books with “wonky margins” (less centered) and even a few typos (wrong punctuation, misspelled words). I’ve read books where a character’s name changed mid-story, only to change it back to what it was in the beginning.
Minor errors, to me, are just that – minor. They can happen to any author and book.
With that out of the way …
There are mentions and depictions of baby abandonment (the reason Rebecca and Caleb are together), domestic violence (Florene and Zane), reference to dementia, as well as adoption. These might be bothersome for some readers. There is also a mention of opioids and a slight lead-in to potential abuse and addiction. These are more or less hinted at, but not about or towards a main character.
Now …
To quote most reviewers, it’s been too long since we visited Oak Burr, Texas and the Shroder ladies; roughly two years (2021). The first book was the author’s debut – The Cowboy’s Amish Haven. While it isn’t listed as a series, that is book #1 in Texas Amish Brides. I highly, and quite strongly suggest reading that one prior to this one. It introduces Gail, Levi, and Sammy. Some of the events in that book are referred to in this one.
It can be found on it’s own, or as a 2-in-1 – Their Amish Second Chance. The cover is the same as Desmond’s first book, but the image is reversed.

Readers who enjoyed the first book will be happy to know Desmond brought back everyone for another round. And, despite this being Rebecca and Caleb’s story, most of the characters enjoy equal time.
As far as why it took a long time to return, this was due to “timing” between the author’s debut and second book. Information was included with the “Dear Reader” letter at the back of the books. In short, Finding her Amish Home (Humble Blessings #1) was the first book the author wrote, but had to put it aside due to editing issues. The first book in this series was sold before the author’s actual second book (the first book in a different series), and from there … we’re here. A bit confusing, but it sorts out.
Since we’re here now …
This story begins with Rebecca heading to town and an SUV speeds past her. She happens upon a wreck down the road – it is the SUV, thankfully the driver is okay – in more ways than one. He’s not hurt, and he is attractive.
Dr. Caleb Sutter immediately apologizes, especially for tearing up the fencing on her family’s property. He admits that he has a lot on his mind. He’s heading to California to take up practice, also hoping to have more time in his life. As an ER doctor – he doesn’t get much downtime, and he’s hoping that will change.
He offers to replace the fence, and also asks for a ride to town. Rebecca drives him into town to not only talk to a mechanic, but get a rental. The only thing available – a cargo van. But, the clerk there goes into labor. However, she wants nothing to do with the baby, and the Sheriff can’t get ahold of social services. Given the infant’s condition, Caleb agrees to watch the little guy, while Rebecca offers up the Schroder/Wyse home.
Despite Florene’s rather “anti-Amish” attitude and attire, Caleb is drawn to the family’s hospitality and simple life. And, they readily accept him as a guest in their home.
It is the infant’s plight that gets him to thinking about his own background and childhood. Caleb feels compelled to help the infant. He also likes Rebecca, but he isn’t Amish. There’s nothing against them being friends, which is what they agree to be ... for now.
When the doctor who delivered the baby falls ill, Caleb steps in temporarily. But, he soon learns there may be more to the doctor’s exhaustion than meets the eye.
While Caleb is trying to find some purpose, and Rebecca is caring for the baby they’ve temporarily named Matthew – Florene is really sowing her oats for her rumpsringa (Pennsylvania Dutch: “running around”) [Link to info below ⬇️].
Around 62% in, Florene’s Englisch boyfriend is showing his true colors – which will segue into the third book coming in August/September 2024. Florene’s story will be #4 – date and title TBD, which the author is currently working on. A fifth book is also in the planning, but I have no information past that 🤫
The more time Caleb spends in Burr Oak, the more he sees a need for his services. He also becomes quite fond of Rebecca, especially seeing her with Matthew. He also learns a secret she’s been hiding, one that would affect her “value” in the community and is the reason Noel “dumped” her. To Caleb – she’s perfect. And, Rebecca adores him, especially his way with the baby and even Florene.
Caleb thinks he’s being given a chance there, but, perhaps he isn’t. Then again, what he wants most he can’t have, and Rebecca won’t give up what she values most. It’s not going to be an easy road, then again, nothing truly is.
This is a sweet, inspiring read that really brings out all the emotions – from laughing to being frustrated, to crying – Desmond really kept my attention right up until the end with all the surprises, one was a plot line that didn’t go the way I thought it would. I didn’t see that coming. Though, I do hope readers get an update.
The author has such a descriptive way of writing that I was literally starving while reading about the food being served. I could almost smell it, and really wanted some pork chops and apple pie 🥧Make sure you’ve eaten before reading this 😋🤣
I had to smile when Rebecca talked about reading and books being like gifts. I feel the same way – though my bank account and likely town home wish I didn’t 🫣 While she referenced Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and talked about Mr. Darcy, I had to disagree with that. I am more of a Sense and Sensibility girl, especially after seeing the 1995 movie. Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon? Swoon! I even bought two copies of the book – one was a cutesy pink version, another was a 2-in-1 hardcover Waldenbooks edition that is 40+ years old. Yes, that has Pride and Prejudice.
Getting back to my review of this wonderful book …
While I enjoyed it, some discontent was with some of the ideas that presented real challenges for me. But, the author had a gentle way of addressing modern-day issues, even in the Englisch life. She doesn’t take a stance, but has a balance.
Because of her courtship and engagement to Noel, Rebecca quit her job as a teacher. This is because the frau oversees the household, but in doing so, it didn’t make her less important. She offered that women worked as hard as men, if not harder.
On the other side, Caleb’s adoptive mother was a career woman, but relied on housekeepers and nannies to run the house and take care of her son. That really bugged me. And, it might be a source of contention for readers depending on their views of “career working moms”.
His mother wanted a baby (since she adopted him) and worked, as a result she needed housekeepers to take care of the home since she was working, and was also paying for childcare. That never made sense to me to choose to do that – especially when it isn’t needed. There are, in real life, couples who choose to do one-income as opposed to two since childcare would wipeout one of the incomes (doesn’t make much sense).
While he enjoyed his SUV and phone, Caleb saw that except for the modern conveniences – electricity, internet, and cars – the Amish lived a full life and didn’t want for anything. They had a tight and supportive community.
The author realistically portrays medical students’ finances. My mother worked at a county hospital for 25 years, and yes – she heard the residents talk about their rather dismal housing, and also eating Top Ramen and noodle cups to get by. Some even ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to get through medical school and their internships.
Earlier this year, one of the ER doctors that treated my mother, admitted to still living with her parents and had student loans she was paying on. This was NOT an intern or a student – this was an actual ER doctor, much like Caleb (only she wasn’t the lead doctor).
It is little wonder a younger doctor would want to take a position with low pay despite the greater good? Medical school loans are harsh, and then add in interest? Extremely brutal. There is also quality of life issues with small towns and access to certain services, which is also highlighted in this book.
With regard to the child services angle, in reality, there are so little resources for the youngest people. Rebecca noticed a need for mothers like Mary that have no place to go for support if they don’t have a family. Yet, Desmond also points out what happens in a stricter Amish community with girls who are similar to Mary. The reality and balance doesn’t overwhelm, but highlights in a compassionate and entertaining way.
Given what’s coming in Amity’s book, as well as Florene’s – I am DEFINITELY going to keep reading these books!
I also saw something towards the end of this book that has me “hoping” it MIGHT be leading to another romance (perhaps this is where book #5 is coming from); especially with the way the story ended. Either that, or the author really knows how to keep a reader on their toes.
Those who’ve enjoyed the author’s books so far will definitely enjoy this read. I know I was drawn right in and read it inside of a day. Then again, books of this size usually are a day read for me, about 8-12 hours. It does have “shorter” chapters for the line, and the writing is not a slow-pace, nor does it feel rushed either.
As far as her return to the HUMBLE BEGINNINGS books that were in the middle of this series – there is no information as of this review. I am hoping she will return to that after this series. I look forward to returning to Wisconsin.
Since this is from Love Inspired and features Amish characters, there will be some references to God and the church. These are not overt tones, but more subtle. The faith tends to lead more towards the characters and not story-driven, though most Christian fiction is inherently that way.
A small note about the cover art – while absolutely adorable, is a bit “misleading”. The baby featured is not even close to being a newborn, so that might throw some readers off. For the most part, the publishers do great work with the art, but sometimes it can be a bit of a fail. This is not the author’s fault in anyway as many do not have a final say in it.

A very good book. If you love Amish fiction as much as I do, you will want to grab a copy before they are gone.

Bonding Over the Amish Baby is my first time reading a book by Pamela Desmond Wright but it won’t be my last. I found the characters to be warm and engaging, and the plot took some turns I wasn’t expecting. I always love it when a book keeps me on my toes by not quite going the way I thought it would. And in this case, what I thought I wanted for these characters turned out not to be where the author chose to take them. But what she did instead was so much better. There’s a spiritual application there – so often what I think is best for my life is not how God chooses to write my story but His way is always – ultimately – infinitely better than anything I dreamed up, even if (like is true for Rebecca and Caleb) it doesn’t feel better at the time.
Rebecca and Caleb’s paths providentially cross when he takes a curve too fast and ends up in her fence. Their meeting goes from cute to urgent when a young woman goes into labor, and Dr. Caleb must assist with the delivery. And his and Rebecca’s newfound friendship cements even further when they are called on to take care of the baby when the mother is unable to do so. I must say, darling little Matthew wriggled his way firmly into my heart just like he did Caleb, Rebecca, and her family. I loved watching Rebecca come alive as she cared for him (and let me say that her former fiance needs a good purse whomping. Oh my goodness he was horrible), and I especially enjoyed watching Caleb find not only a feeling of home and a future but redemption & a Savior as well. Rebecca’s sisters are compelling and I look forward to hopefully getting their stories too – and maybe even the sheriff’s and/or Mary Reese’s at some point because I don’t think theirs are done being told either.
Bottom Line: Bonding Over the Amish Baby by Pamela Desmond Wright is sweet and sincere with unexpected plot twists and a beautiful message of home and redemption. The romance and other obstacles seem insurmountable in this story, and readers will enjoy watching it all come together in the perfect way. The Texas ranch setting and those obstacles I mentioned mean this is not a ‘same old, same old’ Amish fiction plot, something I found quite refreshing and unique. I hope to return to Burr Oak on the pages of another Pamela Desmond Wright novel soon!

This endearing story touches the heart. I enjoyed reading an Amish tale with a bit of a different circumstance. A doctor ends up staying and helping in an Amish community, which brings life changes for both him and the woman he connects with there. The development of their love story seemed realistic and the authentic characters quite believable as they face hardships and deal with life’s challenges and joys. I recommend this sweet novel. I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.

This story brings both joy and sadness for all the characters. The main characters each had their own hurts and trying to deal with them but keep them from each other. With a turn of events things change for both.

Another amazing book by Pamela Desmond Wright. She writes such sweet, heartwarming stories that you can’t help but fall in love with the characters. Any errors you see in the book are not her fault. The publisher sent the wrong file to be printed, but it does not take away from the storyline. I know you will enjoy it just as I did.

This was an amazing read! This is the first time I've read a book by this particular author, and she did not disappoint.
The story was so heartwarming,yet was heartbreaking in parts too. The trust, faith, love, generousity, hope, strength, & togetherness brought the emotions out in the story.

Another wonderful 5-star read by Pamela! If you’re a fan of Amish fiction like I am and haven't yet read her books, you absolutely should, immediately! This story is incredibly sweet, and I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting because I just had to see what happened next!
In this novel, Caleb, an Englischer, is on his way to California to begin a new job as a physician when he crashes his car. That's when Rebecca, an Amish woman, comes to his rescue and offers him a ride into town. There, they encounter a woman in labor who tragically abandons her baby. With no one else able to care for the baby, Caleb agrees to stay temporarily in town to help. What he doesn’t expect is how quickly he feels at home in this Amish community. Caleb has been feeling lost for a while, and now, for the first time, he realizes what he’s been missing: God, a sense of belonging, and a family. But his stay is only temporary, and the growing feelings between him and Rebecca are forbidden. He discovers so much about himself and what he believes God is calling him to do, but leaving it all behind seems impossible. Rebecca, now baptized in the faith, also feels a connection to Caleb, but they know they have no future together. For now, they focus on caring for the baby.... reminding themselves that it can never be more than that. But can God make a way when they do not see one!?!
I absolutely loved this story! There’s something about Amish communities and their close-knit families that is so captivating. Whenever I read Amish fiction, I’m always inspired to slow down, savor the moment, and cook and bake with love for my own family. These books truly pull you in, making you feel as though you’re right there with the characters. Needless to say, this is a must-read!

Bonding over the Amish Baby by Pamela Desmond Wright has us once again back in the lovely small town Burr Oaks, Texas. Dr Caleb Sutter wrecks his car and finds himself stranded in this small Amish community. He also finds himself a temporary co-guardian of a little baby with Amish teacher Rebecca Schroder. As he finds himself drawn to Rebecca and the baby, he starts wondering about his own past. At a crossroad, Caleb needs to decide what his future will be and who he will share it with.
OMS! Another beautifully written book by Pamela Desmond Wright. She knows how to draw you into her sweet heartwarming Amish romances. I loved the first Burr Oaks book and I loved this second one. Rebecca and Caleb both are struggling with their pasts. I loved how they came to terms with what happened previously and what the future holds for them. It was a beautiful story of trusting the Lord in all circumstances and accepting what He his will is for them. I love this small community where English and Amish can co-exist right next to each other. I also love the family dynamics of the Schroder sisters. I'm looking forward to the the next books in the series. It also had the most amazing epilogue. I was having all the feels and crying by the end. There are some errors in the book, but the author had nothing to do with that. The publisher sent the wrong file to press. I didn't really notice any errors at all. I was so engrossed in the story. I love a good, sweet Amish romance and I am a big fan of Pamela Desmond Wright, so I couldn’t wait to pick up Bonding Over the Amish Baby.
This story really touched my heart and reminded me that just because life doesn’t go out as planned doesn’t mean that God doesn’t have something even better in store for me. The characters are so warm and instantly drew me in. I love that the author took their story in a direction that I was not expecting, as I love a good surprise in my reads.
I felt an instant kinship with Rebecca. Life hasn’t went the way I’ve expected in some major ways but I too have learned to roll with the punches and, like Rebecca, I have been blessed.
There are some topics that are tackled or alluded to that could be triggering including infant abandonment and adoption, not-graphic domestic violence, and addiction. I personally didn’t find them triggering, as they are all mostly hinted at, and handled with the utmost care.
Since I am a true blue Texan I appreciated the Texas ranch setting and could easily see this story occurring near my in-laws property, which also happens to be one of my favorite places on earth. I loved this sweet escape and hope the wait for the next novel in the series isn’t as long as the wait was for this one, even though the wait was totally worth it.

This was another 5 star visit to Burr Oak Texas at the hand of the wonderful Pamela Desmond Wright.
An absolutely wonderful story that hooked me in from the first word and kept me enthralled to the very last. Wow! so many issues were covered in such a short book. The characters were absolutely wonderful and the chemistry between Caleb and Rebecca positively sizzles throughout the book. We find ourselves dealing with sealed adoptions, unwed mothers, and much much more. The narrative is just enough to tell us the story and the conversations are written so well it's hard to believe that we are not with real people hearing them talk to each other.
There are a couple of little errors in this book which are not the fault of the other but they do nothing to distract from the book because of the amazing storyline. This was nobody's fault as it was an error in which copy of the file was sent to press
If you have previous read books by Pamela then you know exactly how truly amazing they are and if you haven't you won't notice a boob or two you will get so involved in the story and that is all you will be aware of. Truly the books in this series just get better and better. I am already excited for the next one.

BONDING OVER THE AMISH BABY is part of Pamela Desmond Wright’s Texas Amish Brides series and was a touching story about love, family and healing. Caleb is an English doctor passing through when an accident leaves him stranded in an Amish community. Rebecca following the cannons of her faith, stops to help him. This gesture will then intertwine their lives and be the start of a beautiful friendship.
I was touched by both main characters and their personal struggles. Caleb was a lost soul searching for answers to questions even he did not understand while Rebecca was strong in her faith. She remained positive despite her problems and this positivity and strength of character would also help anchor Caleb and would bring the two together despite their differences. Watching them work their way towards a life together made this the touching love story that it is.
I read this in one sitting and truly enjoyed it. I’m giving BONDING OVER THE AMISH BABY the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy.

This is book two in the town of Burr Oak TX with the Schroder sisters. Rebecca comes upon Caleb Sutter after he wreck his car going to fast. She offers him a ride to town to get help and rent another vehicle. They wind of walking in to a girl in labor and Caleb being a doctor quickly begins helping her, the girl keeps saying she doesn't want the baby, things quickly happen and Rebecca finds herself agreeing to giving the baby and and Caleb a place to stay and being co-guardians. Rebecca and Caleb are brought together alot taking care of the baby which bring them to crossroads of things in both of their lives they have to come to terms with and figure out what the future will be for not only themselves but the baby in their care.
I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book of the other two sisters.

I noticed Bonding Over The Amish Baby on our library's large print 'new books' shelf. I have been obsessed with the Amish people for several decades. I have a personal library of over 150 non-fiction books about the Amish. In years past, I have read very few fiction books of the Amish as I had found that rather than tell a story, some authors of Amish fiction belabor the points of what Amish life is about...why they do this, or why they do that. When I came across Bonding, I noticed it was by an author I had not previously read. I was also tired of reading books that were 400, 500 or more pages long....I needed a shorter book...so I checked it out. Surprisingly to me...I really enjoyed this one.

This book has a few errors in it, but the story had me turning the pages and reading far into the night! This story will make you feel all the feeling. Compassion for a young woman having a baby far too young and making the decision to do what is best for the baby. Empthy for another young woman who is heart broken that she may never have a child of her own. This book will make you smile, cry and feel all the feelings. Plus, turning the pages far into the night. Looking for a story that will make you feel, look no further...you found it.

This is a sweet, heartwarming story full of love, hope, faith, second chances, small towns, and romance. Sometimes things don't turn out like we plan because God has better plans for us. I absolutely love this story. I definitely recommend Bonding over the Amish Baby.
