I really liked this book (the one)! Definitely structured so you can’t put down once you pick it up and become equally invested in each storyline (while I obviously was most fascinated by Nicks). It does a good job exploring the extremes of the types of matches you’d encounter if the service existed and takes it up a notch with the endings of each of the stories — definitely more drama / spooky vibe to the second half of the book which keeps you in suspense.
Would you want to know who your perfect match is? Would you want to know if your current partner/spouse is your perfect DNA match? What if your perfect match is outside your sexuality, or decades older or younger? Or lives on the other side of the world? This novel explores the idea that every person out there has a biological perfect match and follows the lives of 5 people who submitted their DNA for matching. The results are surprising for our protagonists, and raises many questions of choice vs fate. My main complaint is that people who are matched in this book act like they’re ‘bonded’ a la werewolf romantasy. Like they really don’t have a choice in whether they stay with their existing relationship or family, or go with their match? I found something interesting in all five couples/storylines, and truly couldn’t put this book down.
A decent read! Good character development and plenty of twists to keep me entertained - I was expecting more following some reviews I saw on TikTok. Someone mentioned that there were twists and turns with every new chapter and although it was building through each character chapter then I didn’t feel the level of anxiety that I had expected - but this is not to say that it wasn’t a good read - I just didn’t feel that I always liked all of the characters - the serial killer seemed to cliche - and Mandy annoyed me initially…..the biggest twist for me was when we learned more about Ellie - overall though, a decent read and worth adding to any TBR list
Only read The One This book was very good! Parts of it were a little darker and twisted, which is why I didn't give it higher than 4 stars, but that's a me thing. The book reminded me of The Measure in that it follows 5 separate characters and it poses a question of would you find out if you could? In this case, a DNA gene has been discovered that can match you with your soulmate. So if you had the chance to find your genetic soulmate, would you, even if it meant it may not be the person you are with now?
I enjoyed this one. It’s a different read from the typical writing style, jumping stories on top of excitement and you jump into another story left off. Can’t skip to the next section because you want to see what’s going on with the next story too. As for the story, it was very interesting, well-thought. It fit well with today’s times and technology. The stories, although they were exciting, some were far-fetched for my taste, but overall, I would recommend this book, especially if you’re looking for something different from the usual. I would give it 4.5 stars if allowed (The One).
The One by John Marrs is a thriller that explores the dark side of DNA-based matchmaking. Similar to The Family Experiment, it follows five individuals who have found their perfect genetic match, only to discover that love isn’t as simple as science makes it seem. The intertwining stories are compelling, and the premise is eerily believable—making it feel like a not-so-distant reality. However, some parts were a bit too graphic for my taste. Still, the twists kept me hooked, and the concept was fascinating. 4/5 stars.
I listened to the audio for The One. I went in blind, meaning I’ve had the book on my tbr for forever and forgot what it was about and just jumped in. I was not prepared. I wasn’t sure I was going to like it in the beginning, but I think it was the narrators not the book itself. They had strong British accents and some parts were hard to understand and I felt like it jumped around a lot. With that being said; it was a good listen. The book itself was good and a crazy story. The ending was NOT what I was expecting at all!
i read a bunch of books this summer but have apparently forgotten to leave reviews on any of them. just finished The One and enjoyed the structure a lot. i thought i’d get lost with the five different POVs but they’re clearly and cleverly written and stay mostly separated until the end. of course, it’s an infuriating concept to leave it up to a DNA test to determine your soulmate - but i’m glad this book explored so many outcomes
Only read “the one”. Love actually meets gone girl. Lots of psychiatric/ personality disorders. Not a bad book, but gave two stars because it was too messed up for my taste. If you’re looking for a twisted book then I recommend it. If you are looking for a happy ending or light hearted then I would recommend skip.
Started slow - but then I couldn’t put it down. Actually unique concept made the story feel - fresh. Some of the story lines were a bit predictable, and at the beginning, it felt like there were too many characters, but as the stories developed, each one was interesting in its own way. I will recommend to all my friends.
I read the book The One, oddly enough it’s not on this site. It only comes as a package. Anyways … this is a romantic thriller mystery. A dna test will tell you who your one true love is. This books follows the matches of 5 people. Their stories are twisted, drama filled and keeps you turning the pages!
This book is one you can’t just read a bit here and there. In order to really understand and appreciate it you need to dive right in. Lots of characters and points of views and at the end all that you thought was happening changes. The end was incredible.
The One— I loved the storyline. Very Black Mirror-esque but once I started I couldn’t stop. I could see how this made it to a tv series easily. I am definitely going to watch it now! Highly recommend for an easy read! 4.5/5
Loved the multiple views and all the twists. I feel like a lot of time/thought/research went into writing this. It was a little dark at times and made me feel uncomfy but some might love that! Overall happy with the ending!
This book had wanting more and more. Just when you think it can’t get anymore twisted it did. The ending was a little bit of a let down but probably because every chapter was so interesting and intense. Such an easy read to short chapters felt like you are flying through the book
Read “The one”. I am not sure why I you can’t review them separately. Interesting book with some turns I didn’t expect. It really makes me question how powerful the brain is. How much of what we tell ourselves determines our reality.
A little slow to start but once you’re in it you can’t put it down. And right about the time you think you’ve figured it out new twists come along. Moving on to the second book in the series, The Marriage Act, because I liked the first one so much.
The story of a family left to wonder what happened to their husband and father. The father i believe was mentally disturbed by his life with bad parents. He went on to ruin his own life for 25 years. The truth finally came out and all involved were hurt from all the craziness.
I read The One not the other book but this book was probably the craziest book I’ve ever read kept me on my toes and I needed to know what happened! Not my usual type of book I go for but very intriguing and made a great book club discussion!
really fun, interesting read! I enjoyed 90% of the book and then was quite disappointed at the end. I was expecting a big final ending to the story that just never quite happened.
Was not a big fan of this one. Far too many characters and separate storylines to really keep me interested the entire time. I found myself not indulging in it and almost DNF.
I have only read The One, but I loved the story and the characters and the whole idea of there being a "perfect" one out there for us all. Or is there?
