Through her teaching she seeks to educate and empower women - and their birth partners - so that they can enjoy amazing and positive birth experiences, however they choose to bring their babies into the world. In this book, Siobhan debunks common myths about hypnobirthing and explains why she believes it can make every type of birth a better experience - from a water birth at home to an unplanned caesarean in theatre. The Mongan Embracing a natural birth through HypnoBirthing allows parents to take control of the most important event of their lives, and build a stronger connection with their pre-born baby as a conscious little person they can interact with, even before birth. Marie Mongan explodes the myth of pain as a natural accompaniment to birth. It is the fear of pain, a fear that keeps the body tense and closed during birth, which must be released to allow the experience of a gentle birth. My Pregnancy Journal with My 18 Beautiful Craft Projects Week by Week Pregnancy
I far preferred this to the original Mongan Method book. This book gives you good ideas and techniques for maintaining your peace and relaxation during labor, including partner-aided guided meditation, different atmospheric things to implement, and the power visualization and breathing can have. The author is also big on being informed and giving full consent to anything that happens to you during labor. I find this to be one of the most balanced “natural birth” books out there, with the author emphasizing that your calming techniques can be used with any type of labor. I appreciate this, but there still is an undercurrent of “avoid interventions as much as possible,” even though she states otherwise. Something to keep in mind!
This would be good for someone to read during their pregnancy especially if they haven’t joined any Facebook mom/birth groups or don’t feel super prepared. As someone in the US who plans on a standard hospital birth, some things were as useful as she mentions a lot about midwives and home births/birth pools but it is interesting to read about anyways. I knew most of the things she talked about like birth preferences and hospital bag type things from Facebook groups, but what was beneficial was the earlier chapters about the five senses, BRAIN, up/down breathing to work with your body and just the general knowledge about needing to produce the oxytocin instead of adrenaline. I may use some of the relaxation scripts at the end too. Overall, I hope to be able to use some of these tools to have a more positive birth experience but as a FTM I just don’t know how I will feel during the unknowns of labor/delivery.
As a doctor working in obstetrics and gynaecology, the majority of births I’m involved in require medical intervention—so I found it difficult to visualise what a "normal" or undisturbed birth might look like for myself. Hypnobirthing by Siobhan Miller was an excellent resource that helped shift that perspective.
The book is clear, empowering, and grounded in promoting informed, safe decision-making. It doesn’t dismiss medical input but rather equips women with tools to approach birth with calm and confidence. I personally used the breathing techniques during my own labour and found them incredibly helpful.
More than that, this book has positively influenced the way I practice and how I counsel women about birth. I highly recommend it—not just to expectant parents, but also to fellow healthcare professionals who want to support more holistic, informed birth experiences.
Great meditation scripts, solid primer on the concept of hypno birthing. Gave me exactly what I was looking for! But also a bunch of malarkey with no evidence base from the "natural birth" movement - I.e. the "fear-tension-pain" cycle and how home birth is your best option 🙄🙄🙄. So it's good for what it is and I got what I needed out of it!
If it works, it's amazing. I'm sceptical of some parts of hypnobirthing, but that's not to fault this book. This book is clearly sectioned and explained well, whether you decide to use the methods or not.
Paints the birthing experience in a positive light and gives a practical toolkit to prepare for the big day. Helped me maintain a happy, positive mindset through the pregnancy. Yet to see how much I can actually implement on the birthing day, fingers crossed!
I ran through this book! It’s been the most helpful book. I’ve read about My Pregnancy thus far. I’m 24 weeks today. I plan on rereading this book closer to my delivery date. I’m so grateful. I’m glad I found it!!
really enjoyed this and found it more comprehensive than other popular hypnobirthing books without being too dense. particularly liked the birthing preferences template, descriptions of the different types of birth and what your options are and the resources.
I also prefer this book over the classic HypnoBirthing book by Mongan. It’s much more precise, to the point, with clearer explanations and genuinely helpful exercises. Plus, it’s a great book to skim if you’d rather dive into a good novel than read yet another detailed birthing guide.
I really loved all of her techniques and verbiage. Her voice was also very calming. This will be my third time giving birth and I can honestly say I’m excited. I kept tearing up while listening bc I could envision would my birth would look like!
I liked that this book offered options for how to implement these techniques no matter what type of birth you experience (c section, with epidural/without, etc.)!
Amazing book! Has helped me feel far more prepared for birth. Really empowering book as woman to read, offered so many new perspectives and advocating for ourselves!
This should be a mandatory read for any expecting mother, no matter how you choose to give birth.
I listened to this on audible and it was a quick and enjoyable book to listen to. At a FTM this had a lot of good information on the whole birth process. It does push for home birth, but still gave positive tips and explanations on everything that may go down in a hospital as well. I was pleasantly surprised that when I went to a free childbirth class provided by my clinic, they talked about all the same pain management tips… in about a 30 second explanation (or what felt like it) whereas talking about an epidural took over 10 minutes. This book goes much further in depth about all the pain management tools (including epidural) you have at your disposal, and may not even know that you have those options until you hear about them. The main goal of the book is that you don’t have a traumatic birth experience.
Still confused on the term ‘hypno’ birthing. Sure, there is some guided meditation at the way end of the book, but other than that this book was just plain informative.
Update: The irony is that I still had a traumatic birth. Can’t prepare for the uncontrollable. Still happy I read this prior as I felt more educated on everything that went down.
