A fictionalized account of the events of the day in 1656 that the Spanish princess Margarita first saw the painting of herself by Diego Velasquez entitled "Las Meninas".
I'm coming across quite a few picture books about art history. This one recounts the day when Las Meninas was revealed to the Infanta Margarita. Conceptually I like it, especially since I was lucky enough to see that particular painting when I visited Madrid last summer. But the text isn't particularly captivating, and it doesn't have much kid-appeal. Sadly, it goes.
We enjoy reading books that bring history and real people to life and this book was no exception. Johnson wrote an easily accessible story that introduces young children to a painting and a painter. My children responded to this story and the beautiful illustrations.
