Quantum Care: A Deep Dive into AI for Health Delivery and Research

Rate this book
"Can machines think?"

It has been a question that has been asked ever since Alan Turing came up with the first machines that would become known as "computers" in the early 1950s. In Quantum Care: A Deep Dive into AI for Health Delivery and Research, Rohit Mahajan not only answers the question of "can machines think ? " but he takes an incisive and engaging look into how they think. All with an eye turned toward how AI is leading to a revolution in the healthcare industry that is likely to prove as profound as the introduction of antibiotics or the discovery of x - rays.

We are already interacting with deep machine learning on a regular basis.

Have you heard yourself or your friends ever ask the question, "how does Facebook, Google, Amazon, etc., show me ads for things that I was only just thinking about buying?" These large tech companies do not have hidden cameras in your homes or secret drones following you around. What they do have is advanced deep learning algorithms, and this is how Amazon gets to intuitively "decide" what you want to buy next, or Netflix "knows" what you want to watch.

At its core AI is about learning by being able to interpret massive amounts of data and then, very quickly, being able to make extraordinarily accurate predictions based on the same. As you might imagine, that has some remarkable implications for the delivery of medicine and healthcare.

In Quantum Care: A Deep Dive into AI for Health Delivery and Research, Rohit takes us on his personal journey leveraging his real-world experiences and thoughtful insights to help us grasp how AI is becoming ubiquitous in our everyday lives and how AI and machine learning will in the very near future change the very nature of the healthcare industry.

The book also provides a roadmap for investors and startups looking to leverage the exponential growth opportunities being made available by AI healthcare solutions, particularly in the areas of drug discovery and medical research.

With an easy-to-read style, Rohit makes once science fiction concepts such as quantum computers and digital replicas of human organs understandable so that healthcare professionals and medical consumers alike can come not to fear AI, but embrace it and feel excited about this new world we are all soon to find ourselves in.

Quantum Care: A Deep Dive into AI for Health Delivery and Research reads a lot like a college paper or an AI manifesto with the author sort of geeking out on the possibilities. It isn't particularly well written but it is written well enough. It's fascinating! There are a number of books detailing the science of AI and the myriad of possibilities, but Mahajan focuses on the possible medical applications and as one might expect it's pretty mind blowing.

First, I think Mahajan largely succeeded in keeping the book accessible to readers who are not data scientists, programmers, doctors, or chemists. He doesn't dumb it down, but doesn't make it too complex to understand for the average science/technology enthusiast. It was very good, filled with history and insight. For example, I didn't realize that Moderna used AI to come up with the COVID vaccine. That's why they were able to develop it so rapidly. I also didn't know that Moderna views itself as a technology company rather than a pharmaceutical company. They were more equipped to leverage the new technology because of it.
"Moderna’s knowledge of how to leverage AI to process and make predictions very quickly on that volume of information allowed them to do in weeks what would have normally taken months or years."
Mahajan goes on to talk about the myriad of other applications of AI. It's a window to the near future and coming rapidly. He discusses that AI can eliminate the need for live animal and human testing. How medical science has access to so much data that AI can literally predict the outcomes based upon reams and reams of data. Data collected from everywhere, every day including wearable technology like Apple watches and athletic trackers. They can create what is called a cognitive digital twin of each of us to use testing based upon our health data. Folks there is literally no such thing as off the grid. That ship has sailed and the information is available to enable folks to determine the onset of a disease based upon a myriad of things and actions within the collected data. The only thing is that sifting through all of this data for millions of people requires a huge amount of computing power.
"According to an IBM white paper on quantum computing and healthcare, quantum computing will impact healthcare in three key areas: 1. Diagnostic assistance: Diagnose patients early, accurately, and efficiently 2. Precision medicine: Keep people healthy based on personalized interventions/treatments 3. Pricing: Optimize insurance premiums and pricing."
It requires quantum computers…today. Tomorrow, who knows.

I won this book in a goodreads giveaway. It looked interesting and it was. I see this as a kind of precursor to the more polished books to come on medical AI. It's a fascinating subject that has tremendous implications on the way we exist, health care costs, identifying serious health issues earlier will have a tremendous . AI is accelerating at breakneck speed. Right now AI start-ups are repopulating San Francisco, businesswise and there seems to be some ongoing talent wars right now. But the long term trajectory is staggering.
"Artificial intelligence will reach human levels by around 2029. Follow that out further to, say, 2045; we will have multiplied the intelligence, the human biological machine intelligence of our civilization a billion-fold. —RAY KURZWEIL"
Fascinating book!!

Quantum Care - A Deep Dive into AI for Health Delivery and Research by Rohit Mahajan

A short and readable introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing, and the implications for the USA health care industry, which includes pharmaceutical and insurance businesses. Entrepreneur Rohit Mahajan explains the basics of Artificial Intelligence and the concepts of Quantum Computing, and predicts how the entire health care industry will change positively and drastically in the next decade due to these technologies. He describes new efficiencies in pre-treatment, diagnosis and treatment, integrating relevant research and other information, continuous patient monitoring, and fast-tracking new drug development. An excellent primer for all health care professionals to raise awareness of fast-arriving technology changes that are coming, and that are changing the entire health care industry!

Most of the book (Chapters 1 to 7) is technically fascinating, and explains the concepts of AI and how it will benefit the stakeholders of healthcare. Part II (Chapters 8 and 9) is brief, and will appeal more to entrepreneurs studying or pursuing business start-ups in this field.

I particularly enjoyed the optimism, descriptions, explanations and implications of these technologies, and was less enamoured by the business-development aspects. I appreciated the logical structure of the book, and the way that each chapter helpfully ends with Takeways to summarise the main concepts presented.

I received a free copy of this book during NODE.Health's annual Digital Medicine Conference in New York, NY. On top of that I got to meet the author himself, who signed my copy. I was actually quite surprised by the simplicity of this book. I assumed with the name, "Quantum Care", this would require a deep inhale before difficult digestion (metaphor). Nothing of the such with this book. I believe the author's goal was to write an easily digestible book to the layman, not requiring any prior knowledge of computer science or medicine.

The book gives a comprehensive overview of what AI (Artificial Intelligence) is, where it's going, and how it's application will be crucial to progress in healthcare. Kudos to Mahajan for the simple layout of the content and research that when behind publishing this work. He is overwhelming optimistic about the potential that AI technologies will have for investors, inventors, and consumers. However, he is also realistic in admitting potential pitfalls if we (as a society) are not vigilant and do not conform to a sense of governance over these tools.

I recommend this book to healthcare professionals, computer programmers, investors, and basically anymore even remotely interested in these domains. This is tangible and immediately inevitable "future" talk stuff!

That didn’t age well.

This book looks at how AI can be utilized to make the world better, safer, healthier… Specifically, it examined the utilization of AI to make the Covid vaccine faster than any other vaccine in history. There was no mention of the deadly side effects that we are currently seeing. Since there was no mention, we don’t know if the AI “knew” that there could/would be side effects of this severity. Another topic that was not addressed was AI collecting our information and selling it without our knowledge or consent. I wish there would have been a section on the negatives, both existing and perceived, that discussed these issues.

Rohit Mahajan makes a robust case that artificial intelligence will utterly transform the healthcare landscape. By identifying patterns in noisy data, AI is poised to relieve doctors of the more burdensome aspects of the business that could be fully automated instead. Drugs will be discovered at an increasing pace. Trials will be far easier to complete by matching potential subjects with the correct study. And patients can be diagnosed faster without the need for lengthy appointments, which frequently overload the healthcare system. This is far from a comprehensive inquiry of the issue (experts will probably know most of the information already), but it's a good introduction for anyone with a passing interest in the future of healthcare.

The inclusion of a chapter focusing on the challenges of implementation is welcome as well, because costs, patient privacy, and institutional barriers are all important issues that need to be addressed before AI can transform the industry. The comparison to self-driving vehicles, which have yet to make a large material impact on the world, offers some lessons for AI. The initial introduction of vehicle automation came easily, but the last few steps have taken much longer than anticipated. Still, I think the main difference is that self-driving vehicles are an all-or-nothing proposition; they either work for everyone or they work for no one. AI in healthcare, on the other hand, can be fine-tuned to the situation. It can accelerate drug discovery, for example, even as it more slowly proliferates through the wider hospital system. I do wonder as well how the dawning of personalized medicine (more doctors' time spent on individual patients, for example) might change the financial realities of healthcare. Even as the industry becomes more productive, how will the burden and distribution of costs fall on patients? That might be a question for economists, however.

I received a free Kindle copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway.

Mahajan jumps through a variety of IT-based healthcare innovations that have affected human health, and some AI initiatives being pursued now, with the critical elements of big data and provider/patient acceptance obstructing their full potential. He covers a lot of ground and acknowledges some concepts (quantum computing) are difficult to grasp and beyond his scope to explain. The range of current and potential applications, from drug discovery through diagnostics and personalized therapies to patient monitoring, touch every aspect of the healthcare industry.

The book seems to be written for multiple audiences, ultimately not well suited to any of them. For Joe Public, it has too few relatable examples of the kinds of new AI innovations that are plausible and how we would interact with them. For potential entrepreneurs and investors, it doesn't go far enough beyond 'this area is hot' to stimulate business idea formation. For prospective clients of his company BigR.io, well, that's just shameless advertising.

There's a lot in here I'd like to know more about. As written, this is a superficial, redundant introduction that falls slightly short of pointing me to how to learn more. Unless I hire the author's consulting company.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a hot topic recently, with both positive and negative arguments and applications. I really enjoyed this short, easy read on AI, Quantum Computing and it’s applications for the healthcare industry. Rohit Mahajan does a wonderful job presenting the information and making it accessible to all readers, regardless if they’re super technical or data savvy. He does so in a way where he thoroughly explains it without dumbing it down, a real skill! His optimism was thoroughly felt throughout the read, sharing how use of AI currently is and will be a powerful tool in the healthcare industry to streamline delivery and improve processes. If you’re skeptical like me and also working in healthcare, I went into this read with an open mind and came out grateful that I took the time to read/listen to it (thank goodness for audiobooks on those long commutes!). The use of AI can completely erase the need for live subjects, optimize preventative medicine, implement continuous patient monitoring and also fast-tracking drug development among a whole list of other uses. It was an absolutely fascinating read and if you work in the industry or curious where healthcare technology might be in a decade, I would give this one a try.

While I find the proposed topic intriguing, I was disappointed by the surface and reiterative discussion of current AI uses in the medical field. As a healthcare provider, I was hoping for more science and current practice advancements, however the emphasis tended toward possible future entrepreneurial opportunities within the healthcare space utilizing AI. Not only was the content not what I was expecting given the title; also the book quickly moves from factual to highly speculative. This is fine as a thought experiment, but stating these ideas as facts that could be used to found solid, profitable businesses seems possibly misleading. Given those caveats, I acknowledge the book might be great for someone not in the medical field but interested in this burgeoning technology and the changes that might evolve; it wasn't for me.

Within the eye-opening pages of “Quantum Care” by expert author and entrepreneur Rohit Mahajan we are given an in-depth perspective on the artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum care which is rapidly improving and holds great promise for the future in terms of healthcare. According to the author, a huge amount of research and money is being invested in the worthwhile cause of how the AI and quantum computers can revolutionize the medical field. I found it very interesting to learn about the “digital twin”. Mahajan explains that this is “a highly sophisticated virtual model” that represents a physical thing. Ultimately, using the digital twin will enable the user to see how the physical thing is doing in real time. This will help in the advancement of healthcare. A book like this is greatly needed at this time. I highly recommend it.

In his book “Quantum Care,” Rohit Mahajan, an expert on information technology and the software industry, takes us on a fascinating exploration of what AI (artificial intelligence) really is and how we can benefit from it, especially in the field of healthcare. He makes many interesting points and writes in a very pleasant and easy-to-follow manner. I found the chapter on quantum computers very interesting as it explains that they are infinitely faster and more advanced than conventional computers. Interestingly, it is estimated that AI will reach human levels in around six years from now, so in 2029. The excellent author states that “if we are now in the Age of Mobile, we will very soon be in the Age of AI.” We are encouraged to embrace rather than to fear the AI in this new time in which we are living.

I really enjoyed this book. I am a cancer survivor of a stage 4 breast cancer. This made me very excited to see all the cutting edge things that AI and Quantum Computing can do for health related things and diseases in the future. The author did a great job of explaining things in layman's terms so everyone can understand. They did a good job also covering all aspects from what this could look like in the future, to what we are dealing with now and what we have just recently uncovered. I wish they would have included a chapter in how everyone who isn't part of the techie realm could help advance this. Such as advocacy work etc. This was a refreshing take on the subject. I'm not too familiar with AI but when I do hear something it usually isn't good, like it's going to kill us all or turn us into cyborgs etc. Really great and fascinating read!

Thank you to GoodReads Giveaway for a free copy of this book. I actually won one, y'all! #GoodReadsGiveaway

At under 200 pages, Quantum Care by Rohit Mahajan was a quick and concise overview of the potential of AI in the healthcare industry. It was fascinating to learn how AI is already implemented in our daily lives as well as in current healthcare practices since the Covid-19 pandemic. But for all the potential good that AI could create, Mahajan never touches on the negative aspects and possible dire consequences of relying so heavily on AI- especially in healthcare. I found this short volume disingenuous in its portrayal of the realities of artificial intelligence and its capabilities. I would recommend looking elsewhere for a genuine representation of the highs and lows of the future of AI.

Interesting but not Deep

I think we all know that AI is getting tons of angel investor funding these days- I literally saw today a story that a firm with no employees yet got a round of funding. That's not what I came to read about.

If you want to hear *that* AI is solving a bunch of problems in Healthcare, this book is for you. If you want to hear *how* AI is doing it, well, maybe you still want to read this book, but you will need to read a lot more books after this. This only goes over a few of the places AI is being used, with only the most cursory coverage of using lots of data and seeing up the machines to learn so even the programmers don't know what the computer is doing.

And Mahajan's writing style is very readable, but he used quotes from experts that sounded like they came straight from press releases. Nothing too hard hitting.

"Quantum Care: A Deep Dive into AI for Health Delivery and Research," by Rohit Mahajan explores the integration of AI into the world of healthcare. The book presents how AI’s smart algorithms can give us an accurate prediction based on reviewing a multitude of data. The book is well presented and researched and it gives you significant contributions or integrations of AI in our daily lives , and in turn makes it easy for us to transition to using it in healthcare. How I see it is that if used correctly AI can help with the menial tasks that healthcare workers are doing and concentrate their efforts in saving lives and improving the life of the healthcare workers themselves. Adding AI in the Healthcare system can also minimise health care worker’s burnout rates. The way that AI technology is advancing, I wouldn't be surprised if it would actually lengthen our species lifespan.

Quantum Care explores with detail the new AI technology that's revolutionizing the world. It's not the first book I read about it, and my conclusions are far from the author's. This technology is as clever as is dangerous, I'm not writing thinking of a possible Terminator in real life, I just think we shouldn´t rely on technology even more, I think it's a lot.

We are already so controlled by algorithms that we don´t even realize as Rohit Mahajan explains regarding Facebook, Instagram, or Amazon. Creating something that's ten times smarter than humans, and that can replace us in so many aspects, is dangerous.

Overall, I enjoyed this read even though I don´t agree with some parts, I can´t deny the logic behind it.

Quantum Care is a good topical introduction to the current business of AI in the Healthcare arena. Although light on some of the flashier uses and implications of the potential for real time AI in patient care, Mahajan does a commendable job of describing the projected arc of AI as the field develops. The more unique contribution is the introduction of the early state of capital and development impacting some of the financial considerations in an emerging market. Some parts of the narrative are repetitive, lack the sparkle of a storyteller and often sounds more like an excerpt from the Investor Relations tab of a startup web page. Despite these shortcomings, the book is a good introduction to tomorrow's leading medical headlines.
