World Football Club Crests – What is in the badge?

Leonard Jägerskiöld Nilsson has written the ultimate football nerd’s book, I do not think anything will top World Football Club Crests, for quite a while. All I can say about Nilsson, other than being a sports journalist and from reading this book a total anorak where the history of football is concerned.

This book covers over 200 clubs from different leagues around the world, and explores the club crest, its evolving design, its meaning (if there is one) to the symbolism and passion a club crest creates with its fans.

While highlighting the major countries of European football in their own chapters, you can see how some of the biggest clubs in the world crest evolved and is continuing to develop into the future. While I would point out that to be factually correct Manchester United were created in 1902, and there is no historical evidence that United were created in 1878. There is historical evidence (what we historians use) that Newton Heath played their first game in 1880, two weeks after St, Marks West Gorton (became Manchester City). But United have always been fantasists and always disregard facts for fiction.

Other than that, this is a fantastic book for the football lover, and there is something to learn on every page. Great explanations to each era of crest and the periods of its usage. I am sure this will make a fantastic present for every football lover.

There's only a few things I like more than design; soccer is one of them. I can't rate this book any higher only because they don't profile every team in the world's top leagues, and the provided summary of the team histories is mostly unnecessary in a book about the design and evolution of team badges.

If I’d been looking for a short history on popular football teams when I purchased this book, I’d have given this an extra star. Seeing some of the more interesting crests at the back in Notables was disappointing. A coffee table book for a quick flick through at best.

Nilsson's book takes a very inspired idea and does a pretty decent job of it, digging through the history of world football clubs via the conduit of their crests, badges and logos. A somewhat selective text with a focus on some of the more famous clubs from Europe, the Americas and Australia, one could pick this book up and dip into it without reading it from cover to cover. It might not be an all encompasing bible on the subject, but it is entertaining and informative.

Where Nilsson does best is bringing out to the fore some of the history of what one might call the mid-range clubs, such as a Zenit St Petersburg or a FC St Pauli. The stories behind these clubs and their crests are often more interesting and 'new' than the accounts of the big clubs like Barcelona, Liverpool, AC Milan etc. The four major European leagues get most of Nilsson's attention (England's EPL, Spain's La Liga, Italy's Serie A and Germany's Bubdesliga) but the author gives a good amount of space to non-European soccer.

That this space is unevenly balanced towards US football clubs from the MLS is perhaps the most unsatisfactory aspect of the book, particularly considering that African and Asian clubs are virtually ignored except for a bit of an addendum towards the end of the book. That the Japanese J-League and Korean K-League are left virtually ignored is a big miss in my opinion. It's gratifying to see that three A-League clubs are referred to, however I am not certain as to why Melbourne City, Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory get a run when other clubs deserve a reference.

The illustrations are good, as they would need to be in such a book that relies on discussing and depicting club crests. That the publishers have assisted in the visual information presented in the book by adding player photos wearing the relevant crests is a positive aspect of the book's look. There are times that the layout and format seems a little ad hoc however that is a purely personal opinion. Others may like the look of this book more than I.

In summary Nilsson has done a more than acceptable job of a task that deserves more exploration. I hope someone someday decides to do the same for Australia's myriad of football clubs past and present.

Completely random selection of featured clubs and crests. Instead of choosing truly interesting crests and providing us with backstories on them, the author simply compiled what he obviously thinks are "important" clubs, with a heavy bias towards the "big 5 leagues" and of course with English clubs leading the way. The reader would expect that at least all of the crests from the literal front page of the books will be featured, but no, it's more important that there are clubs from the USA and even Australia? But there are only 5 South American clubs, no African or God forbid Asian clubs, but don't worry, that's why we have 50+ crests from English-speaking countries, although some of them are similar or just flat out boring, which doesn't matter too much anyway, because they are not even in the main focus of the texts.

However, all these sins fade in comparison to the fact that red star Belgrade, who undoubtedly have one of the ugliest crests in world football, got a feature page, while its more famous city rival, Partizan Belgrade, with its state-of-the-art crest, got only an honorable mention. Disgusting.

Avoid this book if you truly care about football.

Το World Football Club Crests του Leonard Nilsson,

I read this book to improve my knowledge of football crests from a marketing point of view. Their potential and evolution is helpful in better understanding how well and how effectively a football team can comunicate to its fan bases.

A well-crafted overview of crests from all over the world. The author covers club history, the meaning and symbolism of each crest, how crests have evolved over time, and how the changes have been received. Really good fun if you're interested in football, design, and history.

This book was awesome. Helped me a lot in understanding the history of crests and why the teams decided to modernize the crests and the meaning behind the symbolisms.

I feel that the book needed more pages about the history of the club, and some crests were left out, like the Bayern crest of the 1939-1945 period and so on. But in general, the book is very good and very interesting and full of great images of the crests of a lot of teams (famous and not so famous)
