Prince Prisdang Chumsai (1852–1935) served as Siam's first diplomat to Europe during the most dramatic moment of Siam’s political history, when its independence was threatened by European imperialism. Despite serving with patriotic zeal, he suffered irreparable social and political ruin based on rumors about fiscal corruption, sexual immorality, and political treason. In Bones around My Neck, Tamara Loos pursues the truth behind these rumors, which chased Prisdang out of Siam. Her book recounts the personal and political adventures of an unwitting provocateur who caused a commotion in every country he inhabited.
Prisdang spent his first five years in exile from Siam living in disguise as a commoner and employee of the British Empire in colonial Southeast Asia. He then resurfaced in the 1890s in British Ceylon, where he was ordained as a Buddhist monk and became a widely respected abbot. Foreigners from around the world were drawn to this prince who had discarded wealth and royal status to lead the life of an ascetic. His fluency in English, royal blood, acute intellect, and charisma earned him importance in international diplomatic and Buddhist circles.

ประวัติที่เป็นมากกว่าประวัติของพระวรวงศ์เธอพระองค์เจ้าปฤษฎางค์ ผู้เคยรุ่งเรืองถึงขีดสุดและตกต่ำถึงขั้นถูกลบออกจากหน้าประวัติศาสตร์ไทย ช่วงรุ่งเรืองเป็นคนไทยคนแรกที่เข้ามหาวิทยาลัยอังกฤษ เรียนเก่งจนนายกรัฐมนตรีอังกฤษถึงกับบ่นว่าแจกรางวัลให้จนเมื่อย ร.5 โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้เป็นทูตไทยประจำยุโรปคนแรก ต่อมาคุม 12 ประเทศจากยุโรปไกลถึงอเมริกา ทำงานพิทักษ์ผลประโยชน์ของไทยอย่างแข็งขัน ได้รับความวางใจจาก ร.5 จนทรงล้อว่าเป็น “กระดูกสันหลัง” ของพระองค์ แต่หลังจากนั้นชีวิตกลับดิ่งถึงจุดต่ำสุด ต้องระหกระเหินลี้ภัยไปบวชที่ลังกา ขอให้รัฐบาลอังกฤษนำพระสารีริกธาตุซึ่งเจอที่อินเดียมาถวายให้ ร.5 (บางส่วนอยู่ในภูเขาทองในกรุงเทพฯ) แต่ก็ถูกห้ามไม่ให้กลับไทย เมื่อกลับได้ในสมัย ร.6 ก็ถูกบังคับให้สึก ชีวิตบั้นปลายกลายเป็นคนเร่ร่อนขัดสนเงินทองและญาติมิตร และวันนี้เราก็แทบไม่รู้เรื่องอะไรเลยเกี่ยวกับปฤษฎางค์ไม่ว่าจะในหรือนอกห้องเรียน

My heartstring quivered when I read this book. Despite being nonfiction, the life story of Prince Prisdang of Siam evokes all sorts of emotions and impressions. His rise and fall were so intriguing, full of mysteries, betrayals, and heartbreaks. At one point, one may find oneself pulled into the Rashomon-style enigma, in which we may never know the truth, let alone the whole truth, about the causes of his being ostracized by the Siamese royal elites. At another, one may be perplexed by the conflicting fact that the astute and bitter Prince Prisdang devoted his love and loyalty to King Chulalongkorn to the end although his love had been disdained and his loyalty may even have caused his downfall.
The tragic life story of the exiled prince, as carefully analyzed by the author, reflects the dilemma that befell the royalist Prince Prisdang who never ceased to criticize the outdated traditions and nepotism of the Siamese royal ruling. It is also a cautionary tale of a perspicacious outcast whose many talents and capabilities were left to rot because (among many other possible reasons) he did not conform to the status-based traditions and merits (at the time of colonialism when the Siamese elites held on to the inegalitarian social rules for dear life), and thus was (seemingly) subject to the devastating effects of backstabbing, slanderous rumors, and one-sided judgements.
The book was well-researched and the Thai translation was superb. It reads like a good fiction and, like all good fictions, it is unputdownable.

This is my second encounter with something in book form by Prof. Tamara Loos; the first being her Subject Siam: Family, Law, and Colonial Modernity in Thailand (Silkworm Books, 2006). Before that, I had read her introduction entitled 'Life Commitments: Ben Anderson's Scholarship on Thailand' in Exploration and Irony in Studies of Siam over Forty Years (Cornell University Press, 2014); therefore, I found her preamble informative with interesting details taken from reliable sources of references.
Indeed, I usually came across this book on display in some large bookstores in Bangkok, not ubiquitous, but I didn't pick it up because I misunderstood it from its front cover thinking that it's a scandalous story in the reign of King Rama V dealing with Phra Preecha, a Siamese nobleman in Prachinburi and his British wife named Fanny Knox. It precariously involved a consul named Mr Thomas George Knox (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_...), Fanny Knox's father who disagreed with their marriage, demanding Siamese solution in which it nearly caused a political conflict due to his ultimatum.
I think these two informative sites would help us better understand the story: (1) in English (https://www.nytimes.com/1880/04/12/ar...) and (2) in Thai (https://th.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B8%...).
From my casual reading years ago, I first knew one of his progressive deeds called "misanthropic" by Phraya Anuman Rachathon (1888-1969) who was his only Siamese pupil studying English with him, that is, a sign was posted on his house gate that read "Prohibited from Entry: Dogs and Humans" (p. 140) As far as I recall, I couldn't help being a bit amused then, taking it as his sense of humor; moreover, some people considered him demented [fanfuen (sic) ฝันเฟื่อง] with ultramodern [lamyut (sic) ล้ำยุค] views. (pp. 144-45)

The Siamese Collectors (James Leaver) features Prince Prisdang, but I shelved it for years fearing trouble being the only book about him available....Since Bones was published I felt relieved of the burden and let it run wild....Prisdang is a fascinating man and the era, the time he performed is key to understanding Thailand as it is now....
