California hippies v. bad cops, circa the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. A well-written expose on the war against drugs, and the dirty deeds the government employed to protect its own. Eszterhas, famous for penning the scripts for Flashdance, Basic Instinct, and Showgirls, was once a crime reporter and editor for Rolling Stone magazine. His style here more clipped than Gonzo, he delivers a snappy trio of stories that paint a scary picture of corrupt bureaucracy run amok, and the mortal and psychological casualties that result.
