Fenrir Wolves #1

Not My Wolf

Rate this book
As Alpha of his Rocky Mountains fenrir wolf pack, Corey has a lot on his plate. He thinks things are only getting better when his erotic dreams indicate he’s about to meet his mate. His Beta and best friend invites him on a double date, and Corey agrees, hoping this woman will be his one. To his shock and disbelief, he’s attracted to her brother instead—the big, muscular, overbearing man with a southern drawl. Corey refuses to believe that this cowboy is the one meant to be his mate, but the way his body reacts to one touch is making it hard for him to deny. Devin is aggressive, combative, and he won’t listen to any of Corey’s commands. They butt heads constantly, that is when Corey’s not trying to resist Devin’s hard body. But when Devin gets into trouble with a rival pack, Corey will move heaven and earth to get him back and claim him for his own.

My instalove/UR my mate 4 life nemesis rears its ugly head. I love that this was a free read but I didn't like the set up enough that I would go for the others in the series. While the chemistry was hot and the sex scenes were as well there was one thing I was curious about...

Still, if you're looking for a paranormal/shifter MM with a lot of jockeying for dominance in and out of the bedroom this one is okay and it's free!

On my kindle, this book was 81 pages, with the cover and pages where they're 75% blank at the end of chapters. If I had bought this book, I would have been seriously pissed off about that. As it is, it's a short story about a not gay male werewolf whose werewolf hormones force him to be gay, and like it, and he struggles against it for about three days, then realizes he's 'in love' with his mate.

I have a problem with the werewolf plot contrivance of, 'I wasn't gay until my mating instincts took over and bonded me to this guy and now I love him'. I don't think you can truly trust that you 'love' someone if you have no other choice, it seems too mercenary an idea to call love. And, in this story, it happens lightening fast.
'I'm your mate'
'No you're not, you're a guy, I'm not gay'
'Yes I am, and look how turned on you get when I touch your willy'
'Ah! I am turned on, I hate you!'
'Let's have sex!'
'That doesn't seem like something I wanna do but...okay. Omg! Anal penetration is awesome! (even though it's my first time and I've never even been interested in men before and the author has spent the whole book talking up how big your penis is) But now I hate you again, go away'
'Boo, I'll prove my love-oh no! I'm in danger'
'Nooooo! My mate! My one true love! I'll do anything, kill anyone (seriously, eleven people) to get you back I do love you so'
'Yay! I'm back'
'Yay! Let's have sex in front of my genetically mandated bff!'
'Totally!'
'I love you'
'And I you'
The end... I feel like I've captured the story accurately.

I just feel like, clearly the story is about a person who is being forced to do something they have no desire to do, or had no desire to do, maybe they should have more than a half a seconds resistance. Or, maybe you should just write about two guys, who are already both gay, who fall in love. When did that become taboo? It might be just me but, these types of stories give me the brainwash/rape-y vibe and it squicks me.

2.5 - 3 stars!

Likable enough, nothing offensive here in terms of plot, characterisation and writing; and nothing here to get me excited either.

Fine for some quick reading, probably one of the better free reads out there.

Not My Wolf
By Eden Cole

Devin and his sister, Corinne, were banished from their pack. Since then they've been traveling in the hopes that Devin would find his mate.

When Alpha Corey and Devin meet Corey is shocked to realize his mate is a man and wants nothing to do with him.

Some of Devin's words to Corey while trying to get him to admit they're mates were actually offensive. (Including threatening to rape his mate.) Believe me it takes a lot to get me to get offended. Also some of Corey's behaviors were definitely not worthy of an Alpha and he came off kind of whiney at times.

This book (like others by this author) has received mixed reviews (let us leave the clearly fake ones aside) therefore I waited until I could get it as a freebie on Am.

Ms Cole can write. There are some grammar mistakes but her writing is fluid and well paced.

Unfortunately all of her contents are simplistic to say the least.
"You're their Alpha," ... "But we both know who's the lead in this relationship." - These nice words are uttered in earnest by one of the leads to the other. I may be Italian and fiery but should anyone dare to speak them to me, even someone I loved, I would down him with a broken nose.
Real relationships -healthy ones I mean, other sorts I am not interested in, especially not in a romance- always see a balance of strengths and weaknesses between the partners but the key-word is exactly that: "partners". Two people on an equal footing.
Ms Cole's relationships are all about "mating". The lovers involved have no say in it: as soon as they are mated they become blubbering fools with no control whatsoever on their trousers. Are they straight and find themselves with a male mate? Their loss, as their mate could theoretically force them to submit.

Life in the pack is all about hierarchy, by the way. Obnoxiously so. Which might be realistic but if realism is the point, why are the female shifters in this story that tame? In nature she-wolves have no problem in baring their fangs to annoying males.

The end result is that this short story, the first episode in a series, is short on plot, even shorter and more disappointing in characterization and very rich in banter between two leads engaged not in exploring their feelings but in establishing who is submitting to whom.

Am I going to read the next instalments? Perhaps, but only as freebies.

Normally, I would have given this 2 stars because it wasn't all that bad. I don't hate it or anything. However, I don't have the patience for it, so it goes in the rubbish pile.

50 pages of complete nonsense. We have the big Alpha male, Corey who is looking for his mate and discovers his soul mate is a male, not female.

Says a lot about the story that hours after I finished it, I struggle to remember what it was about. So, at the end of these meager 50 pages, I was left with only thing: What did I jut read? And why?

This was about a 2.5 for me because I could barely stand the alpha Corey and his unapologetic, cruel and rude attitude towards Devin. The declaration of love at the end was flat and not believable especially when he made a stink the moment before about having to claim Devin. I think that if it had been longer with more room to work out Corey's issues it would have been a better read for me. Or groveling would have worked for me too. He was horrible to Devin.

I hadn’t read a story with wolf shifters for a long time, and the lovely cover of this free novella intrigued me.

Two alpha wolves, one who hadn't previously felt any attraction to other males, discover they are mates.

This story had some interesting elements, and I’d recommended it to anyone in the mood for a short wolf shifter read. Well-written, well-edited and an enjoyable read. 3.5 stars

There are better wolf stories out there

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 4/10

PROS:
- Devin’s protectiveness toward his sister is sweet. There’s one point when he makes a comment about sizing up a potential mate for her that I thought was quite touching.
- There’s a decent amount of sex that’s decently hot.
- I liked the little farming community of wolves in which the men live.

CONS:
- There’s a pretty healthy dose of melodrama in the story. I’m a big fan of the (supposedly)-straight-man-falls-for-a-guy storyline, but when the writing comes right out and says things as blatant as “He had never, nor would he ever, take a man to his bed,” it just makes me roll my eyes.
- The writing is simplistic. The author will give voice to a concept--for example, “Fenrir shifters were different from regular wolf shape-shifters”--and then either go on to explain HOW they’re different (in which case, the statement that they ARE different is unnecessary) or not explain the specifics at all. There’s a sentence early on that says, “Anyway, he would be thrilled when he could meet his mate” to which my reaction was, “Um…you think?”
- There are a lot of times when “he” is used and it’s unclear which character is being referred to. “He touched Corey’s cheek, and he pulled away.” Is it Corey who’s pulling away, or is it Devin?

Overall comments: I didn’t like this one much, mostly because I wasn’t convinced of the men’s feelings by the end. I’m okay with instalust; I want the feelings of love to take a while to develop, though. That’s not what happens here. It’s also uniformly over-the-top. Here’s a good example: we know from the start that Corey and Devin are both big, studly men (6’5” and solid muscle), but just to PROVE how studly Corey is, there’s a part where he picks up his mate, who must weigh at least 200 pounds, and begins a “two mile walk to where someone would pick them up and take them home.”

It was free, so I'm rounding up.
There was just too much melodrama, MC running hot and cold and doing a 180 for me in this story.
I don't mind the insta lust so much, they are shifters with fated mates..I get it, but for an alpha, Corey was whiney and I really didn't like Devlin, threatening to rape his mate, because it's a 'right' and he was so overbearing and rude to his sister...
Oh well, it wasn't horrible, I just didn't really like anyone in this story and the plot was weak IMO.

“What if I just raped you right now?” he suggested.

Corey swore. “Impossible!” Devin leaned down and kissed Corey’s neck. The other man shivered and tried jerking away. Devin increased his hold. “Yeah, because if I fucked you right here, right now, it wouldn’t be rape. You’d beg me not to stop.”

---
Corey’s eyes fluttered closed, and then he widened them comically. “S-Stop.”

“No.”

Yeah, no.

Read on 10-12-13

In one word. NO!

In more than one word: threatening rape? NO! not stopping when he asked you to? NO! Corey? NO!

That's all. I finished it, because it was only 50 pages, but I won't read the others in this series. I read reviews and apparently there's cheating, so, that just solidified my decision on not to continue on.

This is silly in parts, and both guys are assholes a lot of the time (Corey was downright mean and Devin got a bit rapey). But I love me a quick, sexy, shifter story, So this did the trick. And it was FREE on Amazon!

I was going to give it 3 stars but I decided to give it 1 extra because this author did something different.

I cannot believe how many m/m shifter books I have read that all have a similar cliche. Normally the alpha is straight, then finds out his mate is a man. He says some really mean and nasty stuff and totally denies the connection by stating firmly IM STRAIGHT dammit. Then he instantly regrets his nasty words and goes begging to his mate to forgive him. The book goes from fight to fuck in 2 pages.

well this book is different (thank GAWD) and for not being a total cliche this book earns a 4th star.

After the two Main Characters (MCs) find out they are mates they promptly deny, fight, and argue for 1/2 the book....but not in an annoying way. It was amusing and fun.

I recommend it to anyone in the mood for a light hearted story that gives a different spin on an old plot/story.

One warning though - dont expect alot of emotional development or more sensitive plot. There is a potential for a longer more emotional story but the author just kept it short and sweet.

Basic and pretty much harsh, in a bare-bones kind of way. Although Eden Cole tried to build three-dimensional characters, I felt it just didn't quite make it there. I liked the idea of the Fenrir wolves, but Devin's concerns about his mixed-heritage didn't have any proof to back it up; they seemed baseless. To be petty, the names got on my nerves [not sure why], but on the more serious side, Cory's way of treating Devin just kind of pissed me off. He was so mean the whole time and then suddenly switched his tune and professed his love.

Then again, I guess I shouldn't judge too harshly: the story was only 54 pages long. It might have been a whole lot better had there been another 200 pages of development, both with plot and characters.

Actually the dumbest thing I have read in forever. I just have no words.

...this is a terrible book. Someone did NOT think things through before writing this. It has no story, it's just kinky semi non-con sex, idiotic insta-love, creepy rapist-stalker-"gonna watch and assault you while you sleep because you're mine even if you resist and fight me and tell me NO," senseless writing that pisses me off like you can't even imagine. Seriously. What the hell even, man? What. the actual. hell.

From the blurb I did not expect the story I got.
Corey is the Alpha of his pack and is looking for his female mate. It's quite the shock when his mate turns out to be a male and an Alpha.
It's hard to like a book when you don't like the main characters. Devin was an ass. He basically forced himself on Corey. Corey, we are told is the Alpha but you don't really see it.
No love or romance in this book.

This story covers a lot of tropes. We have werewolves, we have mates, we have gay-for-you, we have a growly alpha male. It’s got it all. I’ll admit that lately I’ve been on a bit of a shifter kick, so I may be more forgiving of certain aspects of a shifter story than those who find them a bit tedius. Just a warning. :-)

Corey is an excellent alpha but has been eagerly looking for his mate. He is also a special kind of werewolf called a Fenrir, which is based on Norse mythology. (For those wondering why that word seems familiar, the evil werewolf in Harry Potter was named Fenrir Greyback) Corey dreams of his mate, which is usually a sign they are close. When his beta, who is gay, invites him on a double date, he’s hopeful the sister of the date is his mate. Unfortunately he’s freaked right out when he’s attracted to the man, not his sister, however when they request asylum with his pack he can’t very well deny it.

Devin is thrilled he found his mate, however Corey’s having nothing to do with it, and to top it off he fighting off attempts to take their land by some lost lost relatives, but Devin is determined and well, we all know how mates go, you can’t resist. When Devin is captured by the bad guys, Corey is forced to admit his feelings.

I liked that Corey did at least try to resist Devin. He didn’t just fall into bed and he had issues with suddenly being gay. As in most werewolf stories, breeding and expanding the pack is important, especialy as they are more rare Fenrir wolves and Corey wants to do the right thing, but nature calls. I would have liked more detail about the attacks by the rival pack as that aspect is definitely underplayed, except as a method for Corey to accept his feelings for Devin. Devin is also a bit of a stereotypical alpha, attack first ask questions later, whereas I found Corey to come off as the more well-roudned character.

This is the first story by this author or from this press that I’ve read, but I would definitely read another. I enjoyed the voice and tone of the stories, however those who don’t care for GFY or shifters/mates will likely not find this as enjoyable as I did.

What happens when a straight Alpha male shifter's mate turns out to be another male? Read NOT MY WOLF* and find out!

NOT MY WOLF was a recent TGIF surprise from my Secret Book Claus (although I suspect she may have only paid attention to the enticing cover). My first time reading anything by Eden Cole, it was a fun, satisfying read and I recommend it for those in the mood for a quick, sexy story about M/M shifters.

Overall, it was well-written (and edited, thank you!) and had a fairly developed storyline given its short length (est. 50pgs). The interesting and sympathetic secondary characters added to its appeal (of course, generating curiosity as to subsequent stories). I did have a lingering question while reading this but it wasn't directly related to this story and certainly didn't detract from it in any way.

NOT MY WOLF may contain some standard tropes (e.g., instant recognition of the other's mate, one's resistance to such fated mating, outside events bringing things to a head). But it also had the unusual twist (for me, at least) of a shifter whose mate turns out to be quite different from what he had been envisioning. *lol* Even better, the Alpha gets out-Alpha'd by his mate! I also liked that Corey didn't just shrug and with a "well, he's my mate", immediately turn GFY. Instead, he struggled to reconcile his preconceived notions with the reality (but not for too long; it's a novelette, after all).

Lastly, NOT MY WOLF deviated from most wolf shifter stories by introducing a flavor of mythology. Corey's Rocky Mountains pack is composed (mostly) of fenrir shifters, distinguishable from other "regular" wolf shifters because they are descendents of Fenrir, a Norse god. Although this difference is addressed only superficially in this book, I couldn't help but wonder if later books in the series would explore it further.

* Amazon lists this as Book 1 of "My Wolf"

2.5 Stars.

I finished the book, Ok, time for a review:

This book had a promise, i really was excited when I began reading it, Two very alpha males one of them straight who suddenly discover they are mates, the battle of wills for dominance seemed deliciously appealing, sadly the execution didn't live to my expectations.

Corey & Devin start amazingly good, but soon Corey turns into a Harlequin Gal, until Devin robs him of his virtue, and Coryn turns into a b*tch in heat begging for more, i was like really?, and then the cold shoulder the next morning, Coryn really didn't recover in my eyes after that, he could be an alpha by name, but that's the extent of it.

Later Devin turns into the damsel in distress and Coryn goes killing the bad guys to save him, (one thing I really appreciate is the fact that Devin wasn't raped), but in the dynamics of his relationship, after he finally admitted to be with Devin, i wanted him to be more aggressive, to show Devin that if he wanted to lead him in the relationship, he wouldn't have it easy, but it didn't yet live to my expectations.

The think i disliked more of this book is how they acted like teenagers, Corey was a little more mature but not by a long shot, they didn't compromise, they just fuck the acceptance out of each other, and Corey didn't really dwell to much in his struggles about accepting his mate was a male, he just shoved the whole "i am/was straight" to the back of his mind & never thought of it again.

Wow, so this is the story of a straight man who has a magical connection to a gay man, and so the gay man decides to harass, stalk, break into the house of, and then rape the straight man despite his saying over, and over, and over again, that he doesn't want anything sexual between them at all.

I mean, there's this... actual LOVELY quotes from this book:

“What if I just raped you right now?” he suggested. Corey swore. “Impossible!” Devin leaned down and kissed Corey’s neck. The other man shivered and tried jerking away. Devin increased his hold. “Yeah, because if I fucked you right here, right now, it wouldn’t be rape. You’d beg me not to stop.”

and

"You know according to the old ways, I am within my right to force my mate to submit to me."
"That was for the man to do to the woman when she was scared of the sexual act, and it was only with the Alpha's approval and under supervision."

Ha. Haha. Wow. We're not even going to sugar coat what's happening here. Not even going to have ~mixed messages~ or "dubious" consent. No. This is legit rape portrayed as romance. In fact, after all that, the first sex scene starts with the straight guy literally saying "stop" and the gay guy literally saying "no" then proceeding to do what he wants.

So that's GREAT.

I picked this up because Amazon recommended it to me, since I've been reading a ton of m/m werwolf books recently, and it was free. WOW, Amazon, you are so off.

2.5 but I'm rounding down. Although it's a free book I want to judge the book for itself not based on money spent. I liked Devin the most as a character but felt the aggressiveness to his sister seemed slightly out of character for him. Corey seemed too whiny as an Alpha. The plot was decent and although the book was short it was pretty good. My main complaint revolves around Corey but it's a spoiler so...read the book. It's free and decent.

Spoiler alert****
Biggest hate of all time for this book: COREY!
An alpha who spends most of the book complaining that he isn't gay is fine. I understand that. I also understand that he's hiding his sexual arousal to Devin and is fighting for all his worth to believe that his mate could never be a guy but to suddenly do a 180 like that! NO!! I get that when something you love is taken feelings override brain but afterwards it's much like any other romance. The two are sweet and cute and caring and suddenly Corey has come to terms with his sexuality? Are you kidding me?! The whole book, entire book, complaining that he's straight to give up and admit he's gay just like that?! That is why I docked three stars. Horrible ending!

I thought this was a good start to the series. It's a quick read, though, and doesn't really get into things but I rather enjoyed it for the simplisticness (is that even a word?) of it and the hardship Corey put himself through all because he had a male mate instead of a female one.

Corey may seem like an asshole but he really wasn't. He was just under so much stress from his pack demanding retribution on a rivaling pack and then finding out his mate is a male made him harsher then he really is. Devin is pretty laid back although he is more of an alpha than Corey is but they complete each other because where Corey is nice, and somewhat soft, verbally handling conflicts, Devin is more aggressive, using physical force instead, so they compliment each other on what qualities an alpha should have. I really liked them.

I just wished fenrirs and the other wolf cultures and traditions were more explained. And getting to know Corey and Devin better would have made this one more enjoyable for me. Either way, I still recommend it if you are looking for a quick shifter fix. :-)

This was a great quick read Corey didn't see Devin coming. Corey who is alpha of his Rocky Mountains fenrir wolf pack has been having dream of meeting his mate, but he can't see her face. His best friend and Beta Blaine who is gay invites him on a double date, and Corey agrees, hoping this woman will be his one. To his shock and disbelief, he’s attracted to her brother instead and he tries to deny that Devin is his mate. Devin and his twin sister Corrin left their pack in Texas when he began having dreams about meeting his mate in Colorado. Devin knew his mate would be a man he just didn't realize that his mate would resist him. Corey who still had a hard time accepting Devin even after they had sex final realized that he had feelings for Devin when Devin gets into trouble with a rival pack and gets kidnapped Corey will do anything to get him back. This is my first time reading this author and I really liked this story. This was a good first book of a series I wish it was longer and I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

The premise of this werewolf clan, that they are descendants of Fenrir the Norse God, caught my interest. Alas, that is all that is interesting in this gay-for-you, mate-bonding story. There is no emotional development between the two protags. Devin (the gay werewolf) insists he will claim his mate despite Corey's initial, vehement resistance. IMO that is rape and not to be treated lightly in any kind of M/M romance. I grew tired of Corey, the Alpha of a strong pack, waffling between denying he is gay then wanting the other man, sometimes in the same paragraph. The plot fell apart about three-quarters of the way when Cory has to rescue Devin, which cements Corey’s acceptance of Devin as his mate. The sex scenes are dull. The book, written in a sophomoric style, just seems to be an amalgam of all the tropes and clichés found in many other M/M werewolf novels. Its saving grace is that it is short.

Still not sure about this one. I did like the premise and the characters were ok, I just didn't get attached to them, at least not as much as I usually do or as much as I wanted. I think the problem was that it was too short for what it was trying to accomplish. Since one of the characters in the M/M romance had no clue that he was gay until he found out who his true mate was, it would have been nice to have a little bit more story to go with the denial and ultimate conclusion. I love novellas as a rule, and the story with this one was good, I just think it needed a little bit more set up.

I read this book as part of my 'Why Buy the Cow 2013 Reading Challenge' and received it as a free download from Amazon on February 6, 2013.

Well .. was a bit shocked.. lol I love paranormal .. especially wolf reads so ofcourse didn't even read the intro's before getting the book .. went by title. and cover. So this story is about a pack.. lead by a Fenrir Shifter named Corey. He's in search of his mate.. and after many visions in his dreams he knows he is close in finding her. His Beta Blaine is a gay wolf and proud of it... he decides to help Corey and offer to take him on a double date. As the guy he's interested in has a sister who matches the description that Corey gave him in his vision. Let's just say.. it wasn't.. if you like the male on male books then this will be fore you. In all it was well written except for an issue I had with the whole rape concept comment. Even in books.. its still hair rising for me.

The author has potential. The writing wasn't bad, but I think everything about it was poorly executed. I probably wouldn't have read it had it actually cost money. The entire book just felt rushed. I wish she took more time for development.
I know it's human to be indecisive, but I feel like Corey just changed his mind too fast. Then there was the fact that Devin just gave me the creeps. I know it's a common trope in romance novels for the man to be persistent, but... Devin actually threatened to rape Corey. I'm sorry but that is never okay.
It's been a couple of months since I read it so I'm sure there's more I could say and my memory might be a bit foggy, but I don't think I would recommend this book.
