About the author

Robert Ervin Howard was an American pulp writer of fantasy, horror, historical adventure, boxing, western, and detective fiction. Howard wrote "over three-hundred stories and seven-hundred poems of raw power and unbridled emotion" and is especially noted for his memorable depictions of "a sombre universe of swashbuckling adventure and darkling horror."

He is well known for having created—in the pages of the legendary Depression-era pulp magazine Weird Tales—the character Conan the Cimmerian, a.k.a. Conan the Barbarian, a literary icon whose pop-culture imprint can only be compared to such icons as Tarzan of the Apes, Count Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and James Bond.

Qui andrebbero giudicati i racconti a gruppi, in base ai protagonisti.
Kull merita 5 stelle. Un grande personaggio, ed alcuni racconti favolosi (By This Axe I Rule! su tutti) per un personaggio che è Conan prima di diventare Conan, ovvero prima di essere sminuito nel carattere e nel temperamento.

Almuric merita 2 stelle, perché la lunga storia in sé è ben poca cosa.

James Allison è molto variabile. "La Valle del Verme" è molto buono, gli altri meno. Direi 3 stelle.

I racconti di Cthulhu di REH sono decisamente ottimi. Si tratta di un approccio differente rispetto a quello di HPL, molto personale, ma lo spirito è colto pienamente. Gli darei 4 stelle.

Considero Kull il prototipo del personaggio di Conan il Cimmero. Anche se Howard è uno dei capostipiti dell'heroic fantasy e Kull non è affatto un brutto personaggio (non così americanamente spaccone come ci si potrebbe immaginare e con tratti scuri e inaspettati soprattutto nella psicologia) , non sono impazzito per lo stile di Howard, a tratti ingenuo e immaturo, quale forse lui era ai tempi della scrittura.

Kull: molto bello, fantasy allo stato brado.
James Allison: niente di che, i racconti sono scontati e banali.
Cthulhu: belli, si leggono d'un fiato.
Almuric: un pò "Il pianeta delle scimmie", un pò "John Carter". Narrazione decompressa, trama lineare e banalotta, regola dello "show, don't tell" mandata alle ortiche: evitabile.
