Trained as an artist with a BFA in Illustration from the California College of Arts and Crafts, Susan Krinard became a writer in 1992 when a friend read a short story she'd written and suggested she try writing a romance novel. A long-time fan of science fiction and fantasy, Susan began reading romance -- and realized what she wanted to do was combine the two genres. Prince of Wolves, her first romance novel and one of the earliest to feature a werewolf hero, was the result. Within a year Susan had sold the manuscript to Bantam as part of a three-book contract, and the novel went on to make several bestseller lists.
Since then, she's written and published over fourteen paranormal and fantasy novels, and written stories for a number of anthologies, both fantasy and romance. Both the anthology Out of This World (which included Susan's "Kinsman") and the novel Lord of the Beasts appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List.
Susan makes her home in New Mexico, the "Land of Enchantment", with her husband Serge, their dogs Freya, Nahla and Cagney, and their cat Jefferson. In addition to writing, Susan's interests include music of almost every kind, old movies, reading, nature, baking, and collecting unique handmade jewelry and decorative crafts.
In Everything She Does is Magick by Maggie Shayne, Aurora is an excellent physician with a magical healing touch. From the time she is an infant, the three eccentric aunts who raised her determine that it's Aurora's destiny to marry Nathan, who must remain a virgin until then. Problem is that the two have never gotten along. The aunts go to great, and sometimes ridiculous lengths to prevent Nathan from giving himself to another woman before Aurora and he learn that emotions as strong as hate are really love in disguise, and that they wouldn't hurt and bother each other so much if they didn't truly care about the other.
Her story draws on paganism and Wicca (which she knows a lot about, nothing worse than reading a book & realizing the author really doesn't know what they are talking about) and makes for one hell of a story. The magical hijinks of the Aunts are too hilarious & kinda reminded me of Endora on Bewitched the tv show. Poor Nathan never knew what hit him, and Aurora is just so amazingly headstrong. The ritual scenes were amazing and still hold up to this day and man I personally wouldn't have taken that long to get Nathan but Hey I'm not Aurora, I loved the conflict and it really made me think, no matter how grown up we think we all are sometimes we are still reacting to our high school nicknames and drama.
I read Maggie Shayne’s short story “Everything She Does is Magick” first. This was really good! Very enjoyable read. If you don’t like stories where the hero and heroine start off by hating each other than this is not the short story for you. I also read Amy Elizabeth Saunders’ “A Spell of Mist and Roses.” That was very good! I had never read anything before by Ms. Saunders and just might have to look into what else she has read. It was a hilarious and sweet short novella. I give 5 stars to both of these stories. I have not read the other two short stories in this book as of yet because they did not peak my interest. Maybe one day I’ll go back and read them. This book is great to read during Halloween time that’s for sure!
Saving Sirena by Susan Krinard - Save cat, get witch: When a rescued black cat turns into a beautiful, ever-so-grateful witch, Jack Danner has his hands full trying to ward off her latest seductive spell.
Everything She Does Is Magick by Maggie Shayne - When a trio of matchmaking witches chooses unsuspecting little Nathan McBride as the perfect mate for their baby niece, the future looks rosy indeed---except for one little catch: They must keep him a virgin!
To Mend A Spell by Lisa Higdon - When a young would-be witch carelessly places a curse on a handsome sea captain, her attempt to reverse the spell only strengthens the magic...of love.
A Spell of Mist and Roses by Amy Elizabeth Saunders - Banished to a cursed castle, an arrogant nobleman seeks the help of a beautiful village witch---but first he must open his mind...and heart.
The problem with anthologies I have is the stories aren't long enough to become developed to entertain the reader. After the first two, I couldn't force myself to finish the remaining stories.
now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.
The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.
i would highly recommend this author and this book.
Saving Sirena by Susan Krinard - 3. Cute but insubstantial story. The heroine was a bit annoying but I liked the hero. And the heroine's familiar was entertaining. I would try Krinard again.
Everything She Does is Magick by Maggie Shayne - 5. I laughed, I sighed, I cried; this one brought all the feels. And I'm definitely going to seek out more of Shayne's work.
To Mend a Spell by Lisa Higdon - 2. IMO, the weakest of the bunch. It had an interesting setting and an intriguing hero that were unfortunately overshadowed by a TSTL heroine and a sometimes silly storyline.
A Spell of Mist and Roses by Amy Elizabeth Saunders - 5.5. I've never done this and I know that Goodreads doesn't have a 5.5 rating, but I'm breaking the rules because this story... Well, it was amazing. I'm going to seek out more by Saunders.
The verdict: Worth the read just for Everything She Does is Magick and A Spell of Mist and Roses. Especially for A Spell of Mist and Roses.
The story line was a fun idea but execution failed. The main character, being a witch, could have done more witchcraft than just float him around a few times. Both characters were dull. All the side characters were dull. The cliches almost killed me. It's not the worst book I've read in my life but I would not recommend it to anyone.

Four short stories by four unknown (to me writers) and they were great! Not the biggest fan of romance but I'm always in the mood for well-written stories and all four fit the bill.
I'm a big reader of supernatural romance but these stories just didn't do it for me. I bought the book for Maggie Shayne's story but the last one by Amy Saunders was the strongest.
