Sneak Peak 'You have to put your tongue over the milk and catch some of it up in the curve of it, and flick it into your throat in the same movement. That's all there is!' 'And quite enough,' sighed lazy Freddy. 'Dogs do it differently,' mother continued. 'They put their tongue under the milk or water, or whatever it is they want to drink, but they toss it into their mouths in precisely the same way.' 'I shall never do it,' poor Zobeide complained. 'You will have to nurse me all my days, mother.' 'Oh, what a darling!' the woman exclaimed. 'May I just touch it?' She did touch me, but Auntie May held my hind paws firmly down in the basket. She needn't have bothered, I don't go to strangers. Synopsis The animal autobiography of a Persian cat named Loki is a classic children's book by British author Violet Hunt, first published in 1905. This amusing story will give you a delightful glimpse into the life of a cat and all of their mischievous antics.
A cat is the most difficult of all animals to understand; it is both intimate and remote; it is both reliant on humans for comfort and loftily indifferent to their desires. It takes someone who has lived with cats and witnessed their quirks, whims, and strong uniqueness to write about them, and in the present author, they have found a true spokesperson. In dealing with the matter, a sense of comedy is required - and there is enough of it. Loki is a real cat in more ways than one, and people who follow his narrative will learn more about their own cats than they ever have before.

Found this on Project Gutenberg, a free download, an out of copyright curiosity from a century ago. Very British, part of an "animal autobiography" series. It's strangely unsentimental for such a cutesy subject, an unblinking stoical look at the harsh realities of life from a kitty's perspective.

Yup. Written in a very different age.
