A short, but intense, walk through the Holy City in the 16. and 17. centuries. Politics, economics, warfare, egos, success and failed stories show that history, as long as it is animated by humans, will only change settings, cast and means. Motives and vectors stay the same. Which makes for a very compelling reading. I also appreciated the author's awareness about their material being outdated where new details have emerged due to research. Proof of their passion for the domain, which they monitor with a healthy critical eye and a tongue-in-cheek irony.
