The A Life of Millie Keith novels follow the exciting life and times of Millie Keith, a girl of strong Christian faith growing up on the Indiana frontier in the mid-1800s. Adapted from Martha Finley's 1876 sequel to the popular Elsie Dinsmore novels, these revised and updated, modern-language books introduce readers to yet another delightful Christian heroine.
Martha Finley was a teacher and author of numerous works, the most well known being the 28 volume Elsie Dinsmore series which was published over a span of 38 years. Finley wrote many of her books under the pseudonym Martha Farquharson.
Millie’s faith is so inspirational! I am thoroughly enjoying this series, I just ordered another set of books too. I wish they were easier to find. I love how wholesome and sweet they are, I love Millie’s familial relationships, how functional they are and that the parents actually act like parents and the children listened! Millie is a sweet friend and loves the Lord with all her heart, in this book she learned about loving and praying for her enemies . I aspire to be such a faith filled person! (Physical Book)
So wow. This book was amazing. Rhoda Jane....Gordon.....Claudine....Millie....Baby Rose!!! This book! 👀👏👌👌 WAS AMAZING. But yet, I don’t think they should have had the kids going in the house by themselves... I found that rather strange, although it was an AMAZING chapter of the book!! Rhoda Jane and Gordon....WHY DID GORDON HAVE TO HAVE A GUN ACCIDENT- AND CLAUDINE?! YOU BROKE HIS HEART *sob*!! It was a beautiful, amazing, great book! I have been LOVING the Millie Kieth books!! And all her characteristics. It was great 💜

Five Things About Millie Keith: Millie's Courageous Days
1) as I said for the first book, this is not my usual genera. I am a high fantasy lover. Yet I really enjoyed this book! It gives me similar feelings that the Septimus Heap series does. I could just snuggle up with a warm cup of coffee and a warm blanket on a rainy day and that would be paradise.
2) THE KEITH FAMILY. AHHHHHHHHH. I just love all of them so so much. I love her mother, and Don and Cyril. Maybe it's because I'm part of a big family myself, but I just love all of them soooo much. It's very real and I can relate on a lot of levels.
3) It handles lots of different aspects of Christianity that I really admire. Damaris, for example. Rarely have I read in a Christian book about a Christian who had it all wrong. I usually only see that in non Christian fiction, and it irks me. But this was handled soooooo well!
4) Millie is absolutely lovely. She captured my heart even more in this book. Her faith and courage (pun intended) is soooo inspiring! And her heart for a God makes me want to be like her in a lot of ways.
5) overall, I left this book with good feelings and a warm smile. It ended nicely and cleanly.
I adore this series, and I loved this book. Reading it for a third time was so nice! I love the characters, the plot, the faith... It's just really good. Highly recommended!
I adore this entire series, but "Millie's Courageous Days" will always have a special place in my heart. Trusting God even when bad things happen is so hard, but so incredibly amazing. I love how this book shows the realities of loneliness, the hardships of the frontier, and broken hearts. Millie knows where to go to deal with all of these things -- God and His Word. I love the humorous moments of this book, and the emphasis on Celestia Anne, Aunt Wealthy and Gordon (three of my favorite characters in the series)! The scene at the end with Damaris Drybread gave me the chills the first time I read it. God really does work all things together for our good and His glory.
This was an awesome sequel to the first book. I actually enjoyed it more, and I think that had to do with already knowing the characters, and places, there wasn't so much to get used to. I enjoyed seeing all the characters grow. My only complaints are that 1. A, B, and C (The girls) seemed to disappear entirely. We didn't hear a thing about them and Millie seems to have forgotten about them. 2. Overall this was a good book and I look forward to the next book.
wow......I just love these books! they are filled with wonder, excitement, laughter, sorrow, and joy. Martha Finley did a fantastic job in writing the Elsie Dinsmore and Millie Keith books! when I read this book, I was amazed at how I grew in my faith as Millie grew I hers. this was the first series in which I felt as if I was there, a part of the Keith family. I highly recommend this book for 10+......and when you're done with them, you can put them in your hope chest for your future daughters to enjoy :) this is 2 out of 8......so don't miss reading all the books!
This is still one of my favorite Christian series for young women and girls ever. I loved reading all of the Elsie Dinsmore, Millie Keith, and Violet Travilla books as a girl, and whenever I find them again, they are just as fresh and delightful as the last time. For fellow Lutherans, there is, admittedly, a lack of sacramental theology, but the Christian life of each of these young women, their pursuit of truth and love and honor, and the quandaries they each face in the midst of sin-troubled homes and families is always inspiring.
Maybe someday I will finally buy all of them and have them on my shelf forever to read and enjoy and share!
What an amazing read and a good read for young girls especially. I am quickly falling love with the character of Millie and even the rest of the characters within her family.
I'm currently re-reading this series after a few years, and oh my goodness, I love it just as much as I used to. 12 year old me was obsessed with this series, and I am now as well.
The Millie Keith series was one of my favorite series to read. It's written by Finley, the same woman who wrote the Elsie Dinsmore. However, I found that I was more discouraged reading the Elsie series than I was with the Millie series. The reason being that Elsie is SO perfect in the books, always in the right, etc, etc. I'm not like that, so I was discouraged reading the books. However, when I read the Millie Keith series, I was encouraged by who Millie was. She was just like me! She had her problems with wanting to pinch her brothers right away when they wouldn't listen to her, or being content with what her parents told her to do. But, throughout the series, you get to see her grow in the Lord, and eventually those problems began to go away. She no longer feels the urge to pinch her little brothers, no longer struggles as much to be content with her new life. So, it was more encouraging, to me. The Dinsmore books are good, too. But perhaps I just felt better when I thought I could 'grow with the characters', per se. :)
This series - all the Life of Faith Girls books - are treasures and make me laugh, even on the third or fourth read, as I think this is.
2024 Update
Poor Millie. There's a lot of loss in this book. A lot of pain and grief for her heart. The last time I read this series I did not yet know the pain of a sudden relationship loss, the ache of missing someone, nor the miracle of a reconciliation you thought would never occur. All of them I have now experienced/am experiencing. In some ways this series is like the Bible in that there is something different that stands out each time I read them!
So far this book is SO good!!! I am almost done with it and it has very exciting parts in it. Lots of things happen that make your heart speed up. It is about Millie who is settling into her new house (she finally moved from the warehouse where she first lived in-in Pleasant Plains) She has lots of responsibilities to do and she has to take care of her little siblings. On top of that she has to deal with her friends who are very difficult at times.
I love the Millie Keith series so so much. It helped form my faith and encouraged my young walk with Jesus when I was a pre-teen. As an adult, I am filled with the simple joy and reminder that Jesus works in beautiful ways, even during the hard times. That's what the second book of Millie Keith is all about--- hanging on to Jesus, even when things seem confusing, hard, and grim. Highly highly recommend for any pre teen girl, especially if they're interested in history.
I loved every single one of the Millie Books! I read them when I'm sick of reading or if I can't sleep or if I'm having a bad day. She grows up through the books so I'm always her age. :)
