When I was in junior high, my friends and I read the Sweet Valley High series, about 16-year-old identical twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield and friends in Sweet Valley, California. It wasn’t educational or thought-provoking, but that fluff did reinforce the values of honesty and loyalty among friends. Even Jessica, the more superficial twin with a new boyfriend every week, was essentially a good person who stuck up for her friends and had empathy for others.

Times have changed, and now we have The Clique, a series set in wealthy Westchester County, just north of New York City, and featuring a group of shallow 12-year-olds who spend their time using their parents’ credit cards to buy outfits from the latest issue of Vogue. This collection features the first three books: The Clique, Best Friends for Never, Revenge of the Wannabes. Massie Block is the leader of the clique, which also includes Kristen (the athletic one), Dylan (the slightly overweight redhead), and Alicia (who secretly wants to take Massie’s place as the group’s leader). Enter Claire, whose family has moved to the area from Florida. Claire’s father is an old friend of Massie’s dad, so Claire’s family (her parents and 10-year-old brother Todd) will be staying in the guesthouse of the Block family’s estate.

Massie is a spoiled diva with virtually no redeeming qualities. We grow to like her a bit as she is won over by Claire in the course of the first three books in this series (which currently numbers fourteen), but if she hadn’t been so superficial, she wouldn’t have spurned Claire in the first place simply because she isn’t rich or trendy enough for Massie. The fact that Massie is inexperienced and nervous around boys is the most successful method of gaining readers’ sympathy.

The reader immediately feels empathy for Claire. Who can’t relate to being the new girl (or guy), moving into an established group worrying about making friends? Claire’s brother Todd provides much-needed comic relief with his crush on Massie, as well as the sibling squabbling with Claire. Most of the characters, however, are stereotypes.

The stupidity of the adults is also staggering. Both Claire’s and Massie’s parents are oblivious to the hostility between the two girls. And when Massie makes barbed comments to Claire in front of them, they say nothing.

The most revolting aspect of the books is the way the characters accept Massie’s social domination as the natural order of things. After a failed attempt to lead a clique of her own, Alicia reflects that Massie is the natural alpha and is content to return to the beta position in her group. Even Claire, to whom Massie has been repeatedly, inexcusably rude, notes that Massie’s friendship has to be earned by those who deserve it.

I have friends with pre-teen girls and have worked with kids this age; they were nothing like the vapid, scheming, appearance-obsessed girls in The Clique Collection. Even accounting for differences in lifestyle, income bracket, and geography, the protagonists of these novels are completely unbelievable.

I loved this series! This is the first 3 books in the Clique series and I have to say that I am hooked! I am a twenty something year old mom and I want to buy all of the rest of the series! It really transports you to the world of the clique and back to middle-school and high-school.
Lisi Harrison does a great job on the story and does it in a very funny way that everyone can relate to from either side of a clique. I love the environment of the books and the Fashion slang that Lisi adds to the book. Very fun, easy read. A typical teenage drama book but I must say is written very well. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! :)

This book is a event filled book. It tells you that when you get everything you want you just keep wanting more. Alicia shows this by going behind her best friends back and cheating to win a school best dressed modeling competition. Now that Massie found out about Alicia she is really mad and they aren't friends any more. Since Massie and Alicia are no longer friends Massie is starting to be a lot more nice to Claire who she was never nice to. Cliare moved in to Massie's guest house because her family didn't have enough money to buy their own house yet.

I thought that this book was really good. I learned that you should just be yourself when you get involved with a clique.

Addicting series for young, YOUNG adolescents. I read this couple years ago, but now it just seems... banal and unrealistic. However, I do remember it being very exciting.
