A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

My Ultimate Year Three

The first batch of team ups weren’t really my thing (other than Peter dressing for school like a Logan wanna be) but I really enjoyed this second set.

Read
MTU #9 for a Saturday morning marvel parody
MTU #10 for an emotional lizard reboot with incredible art
MTU #11 for marvel kids at the mall
MTU #12 & 13 for a “Strange” twist
MTU #14 for an ok black widow tale/ad for the Ultimates
MTU #15&16 for a fun Shang Chi/Spidey story with a little folklore for good measure

The only reason this got three stars instead of two is because of Dr. Strange's story. It did a pretty good job explaining where he came from and who he is. I didn't know that story. Otherwise, this was just ok. Spider-man is pretty amusing, but the different art styles didn't do it for me.

For no discernible reason, I've decided to do a re-read of the whole Marvel Ultimate universe. These very early Ultimate Marvel Team-Up books are somehow worse than I remember. Each issue (or short two-issue story) is just an excuse for Bendis to team his new Ultimate Spider-Man up with a character or team from the Marvel Universe. The problem is that they essentially gave Bendis unilateral authority to define the Ultimate version of a bunch of characters in a way that doesn't make sense.

Never fear, dear reader, because almost everything that occurs in these pages is retconned almost immediately afterwards! The versions of the Fantastic Four and Doctor Strange (and Iron Man, Punisher, etc.. from Volume 1) bear little resemblance to the versions of the same characters that will be later re-introduced in the pages of different books in the Ultimate line. I can only assume that they gave Bendis the keys thinking the Ultimate universe would remain a small line and let him introduce nearly every important character in whatever way he wanted over the course of this short series. Then they decided that was a terrible idea!

The stories here aren't interesting, either. The Fantastic Four team up is the absolute weirdest meta story I've ever read. It's full of 2001 Marvel office inside jokes that I just care nothing about and really appeal to almost no-one in the audience. There's some talented artists but they aren't given a lot to do.

This stuff just really isn't a part of the Ultimate Universe and it's not good either.

In my younger days, I used to love Marvel Team-Up and Marvel Two-In-One ... a chance to see Spiderman & the Thing, respectively, meet up with the varied heroes of the Marvel Universe. Sometimes, they had the flavor of filler, but others they touched something and made the effort worthwhile.

When I stumbled upon this collection at a "remainders" book shop, I grabbed it - especially since I've always been a fan of both the Man-Thing & the Lizard (who are featured in the 2nd story). What I didn't realize is that "Ultimate" was not simply another adjective to distinguish the book, BUT indicated a whole other Marvel Universe.

I really enjoyed the first story with the Fantastic Four. It was irreverent, and in my opinion reflected the Marvel Universe had it been created by the great Underground Comix talents of the '60s instead of Lee & Kirby. (OK, admittedly, without the sex and drugs ... but the attitude IS there!) It was fun; I LOVE saying that about stuff I read!!

Then came the Man-Thing story ... OK, so how DID Dr. Sallis' modified self end up in the sewers of nyc?? And the updated Lizard?? I'm sorry, y'all - I was disappointed. (At least the Man Thing still looks like the walking bog I remember!)

The rest of the stories - X-Men, & 2 parter w/Dr. Strange, were OK reads. nothing to turn the world on its head or really give me a good feeling or a good shock or ... but they were't wastes of my time, either.

Another scatter-shot run with mixed results. My enjoyment of each issue largely hinges on whether or not I like who Spider-Man is teaming-up with. Which tells me the stories aren't really that strong.

I really loved the take on Dr. Strange, but I could care less about Punisher. Similarly, the whims of the authors/illustrators makes this a craps-shoot as to whether the work will be intriguing or completely offensive to my tastes.

Not really a fan of the varying art styles. The story lines seem relatively cheap or re-used. Self-referential humor is over used in first story.

More Spiderman meets... this time its the Fantastic four, Doctor Croc, Manthing and Doctor Strange. It seems to be a way to introduce Ultmate versions of old characters rather than concentrating on story. The Fantastic Four story was good but very short.
