What could possibly drive a pastor's wife to run away from home?
After years of frustration from life in a church fishbowl, Annie McGregor walks away from it all and boards a plane for Colorado. She has no way of knowing her college sweetheart is headed to the same cabin in the Rockies, terrified and gravely wounded. Their unexpected reunion couldn't have come at a worse time. Or could it? Bewildered that God would allow Michael Dean to walk back into her life, Annie pleads with Him to keep her heart true to her husband and her family. God answers her prayer, but in a way she would never expect.
Written by a former pastor's wife, Annie's story provides a rare look inside the family life of those in the ministry, particularly the unique pressures on those who marry men of God.
Born in Texas and raised in Oklahoma, Diane Hale Moody is a graduate of Oklahoma State University. She lives with her husband Ken in the rolling hills just outside of Nashville. They are the proud parents of two grown and extraordinary children, Hannah and Ben.
Just after moving to Tennessee in 1999, Diane felt the tug of a long-neglected passion to write again. Since then, she's written a column for her local newspaper, feature articles for various magazines and curriculum, and several novels with a dozen more stories eagerly vying for her attention.
When she's not reading or writing, Diane enjoys an eclectic taste in music and movies, great coffee, the company of good friends, and the adoration of a peculiar little pooch named Darby.
I really did not know what to expect with this book. I do enjoy Christian literature, but I tend to go with inspirational romances. This is not a romance although it does have strong romantic elements and a beautiful and incredibly strong love between Annie and David.
While Annie is deeply in love with her husband David, she is worn down by the hypocrisy of his parishioners. They ridicule her husband's decisions, they give her children a hard time and demand all of his time. She just has to get away to think.
She leaves without telling her family and flies to Colorado to stay at her college friend's cabin in the woods. There she tries to get in touch with her feelings. She finds she is actually angry at God for allowing the problems in her life to happen.
Snowed in with a badly sprained ankle, she is surprised when an injured man shows up at her door. She's even more surprised when she discovers it's her college boyfriend, Michael Dean, a man who broke her heart.
What could God have planned for her? As she nurses Michael, she will she find the answers she is seeking and end up even more confused?
At first, I was not sure about this book. It seemed to jump around a bit, bringing in quite a few characters with many points of view, but I was intrigued and continued to read. As the story unfolds the many characters mesh together and the story pulled me further into the book.
Annie faces questions that I believe many Christians have asked. I know I have. I found her search for answers compelling. She only wants to find her closeness with God. A closeness she feels she has lost. I enjoyed her journey toward the truth. I wept a few tears along the way.
Michael is a very confused man and has allowed his life to go in a direction where he has been so driven to succeed, he has forgotten what is truly important in life. I enjoyed his realization that he had made a great many mistakes in his life and needs to change his ways.
David has allowed his church to so totally control him, he has neglected the very people he loves most. When Annie leaves it’s a huge wake-up call for him. He is determined to change his ways and prove he is the same man Annie fell in love with and the same husband and father. He goes to great lengths to prove this to her and his children.
I thoroughly enjoyed this spiritual journey for not only Annie but David and Michael. If you like Christian-based fiction, then you will love this book. It touched my heart and enriched my faith as well. Ms. Moody is a gifted story teller and I will definitely look for other books by her. Happy reading!
Firstly, this novel should have been titled "The Pastor's Runaway Wife" - the pastor didn't run away leaving his wife behind! A mere trifle, but I couldn't resist pointing it out.
I have often wondered - and admired - how pastors/vicar's wives cope with the constant demands on their time and how they feel about having their husband's attention only partially focused on the family.
This well written book shows just how someone who is driven to desperation copes with the fact that her marriage is going down the tube owing to the demands of the parish and her own spiritual and emotional exhaustion.
Annie, driven to desperation, sheds the parish trouble-makers and heads for a cabin owned by a long-standing friend which is in the mountains of Colorado - at the same time that her teenage sweetheart is on the run for his life from his father-in-law. They meet there and this causes considerable complications! The main character's problems are finely drawn and easy for any woman (I don't rule out men here though) to understand.
The plots are cleverly woven and the tension in the story keeps the reader with, in this case, her eyes firmly planted on the page. I was appreciative of the way the author interchanged the chapters to keep the reader constantly informed of what was happening at all stages of the novel so that the focus on each character's part in the story is not obscured.
Thrillers/mysteries/crime novels by their very genre need to be fast-paced - usually of a few days or a couple of weeks plot duration and the tension needs to rise inexorably. This novel gives all of these aspects, including a surprise twist involving Annie's eldest son, which I certainly didn't see coming!
The story ends satisfactorily and traditionally, but this in no way detracts from an overall excellent read!
I am a pastor's wife. This book hit home in so many ways. It made me very grateful that, when my husband and I were hitting burnout after 20 years of ministry, we took it seriously and took steps to address it. This book showed me what could have happened to us if we hadn't dealt with the issues at hand. At times I had to stop reading, take a deep breath, and cry through the agony Annie was experiencing. On another level, I enjoyed the mystery, intrigue and suspense that was woven into the story with Michael's life. The book definitely became a page turner as the story progressed. When I finished the book I was definitely glad I had taken the time to read it.
This book deserves more attention than it will gain from its cover. Christian suspense but with deeper issues. So many pastor's and their wives feel like the characters in this story. Too many Chet's in this world or people used by them. Will definitely read more from this author. Two parts jarred on me. Her sharing with Michael towards the end felt too abrupt and the heroine's response to the 'rescue' at the end.
What could have been a 4 or 5-star for much of the book, quickly nosedives into a 2-star.
Annie's taking a break from everyday life. Being a pastor's wife is choking the life out of her. She sees right through the gossip that's not-so-cleverly placed under the guise of "prayer concerns" from church members. She's had enough of the bickering, back-biting, and criticism. Her husband is never home as he's out doing God's work, ministering to the church instead of his own family.
Michael is running away - well, I don't know why he has to run. It's not like it was he who did something wrong. Someone else did so why is he the one running from authorities? From goons, I understand but from authority?
David makes a self-discovery. Max' teacher is out to cause trouble for Max, and Max is starting to think he could have been somewhat to blame for his mom leaving.
The Runaway Pastor's Wife held this reader's interest through about 50%. At about halfway, it becomes dramatic and predictable. "Ya Right"-things start happening such as someone knowing someone else who can provide just what is needed at the precise moment it's needed, or someone agreeing to something that wouldn't be agreed to in "real" life.
This reads as though it could be a Dukes of Hazard episode? Remember The Dukes of Hazard? In this episode, Elliot plays Boss Hogg and his deputies are the ones on the chase.
I liked the idea of this story but wasn't crazy about the way it was written. I wished the characters were more likeable and easy to identify with, but they didn't stir much in me. I liked the Polish donut store owner the best and he's a minor character, but he made me laugh. The story had a few highlights, but overall I was disappointed and just wanted to get to the end so I could be done with it.
The story kept my attention and the fight at the church was very intriguing (of course, if this actually happened I would be appalled). I would have given it five stars but too much happened that made God look like a fairy god-mother, who makes things happen very conveniently. God is amazing but we need to remember that it's His Will and not our own.
The title grabbed my attention as I was collecting books for the week. I am glad this book was purchased.
It is a heart wrenching book that shows that all of us have flaws. In detail GOD works in ways we may never comprehend such as was Annie's dilemma when she was faced with a challenge she thought she could not handle along with the problems she was trying to solve on her own.
Runaway does show how some Christians can get so off track away from GOD and disrupt others lives even though they feel they are justified in how they deal with ALL people. There were times of despair, pain, hurt, and eventually togetherness.
For many Pastor's wives or anyone who feels as if they are powerless The Runaway Pastor's Wife will give them insight that all is not lost. A good read that had me hooked from the start.
I would like to see more from Diane Moody perhaps Christine's story in relation to the ending.
This book had potential but went on a shallow crowd-pleasing route that really didn’t solve anything that was the problem in the beginning. It was disjointed and the ending especially was poorly done. I’m sorry but if you’re the type that believes God uses an avalanche to kill off the bad guys and call it a miracle, then this book is for you. For me, that just turned my stomach. There is no real redemption or hope here, just typical hollywood-style drama with the name of God thrown in here and there.
This book was a pretty good book, it kept my interest, but the preliminary chapters where all the characters were introduced were a bit slow for my taste. From about 50 percent on it was hard to put down.
At first, the story seemed to jump around as everything was being set up and the flashbacks didn't fully make sense in the beginning but as everything started to come together I understood why the storylines seemed to jump around, it was all about setting the stage for everything to come together. Annie is experiencing what some may call a mid-life crisis because she has been worn down by the hypocrisy and at times down right pharisee type attitude of some or the parishioners of the church her husband is pastor of. Annie leaves to find answers to her questions and rediscover her closeness to God, which is a wake-up call to David (Annie's husband) that he has been unintentionally neglecting those he loves most on this earth, his family. In the midst of everything, Annie's ex-boyfriend, Michael, is in the middle of an incredibly dangerous and precarious situation that leaves him searching for help and leads him to the same remote cabin that Annie is spending time in while trying to find her closeness with God once again. The remote cabin is owned by a mutual friend of Annie and Michael, and everything peaks when the danger follows Michael to the remote cabin. Throughout their journey Annie not only helps an unjured Michael but she is also able to start reconciling her past to the present and share God's love with Michael, who has had his own realization that he has messed up in his past. More than a few whimsical characters play their own roles along the way, but perhaps the one I found the most surprising was Grady, who at first appears to be a good friend Michael and also knew Annie, from when she dated Michael, but in the end Gradys treachery is revealed when the trouble following Michael is all revealed.

This is a great story. I love the fact it was a Christian book so no bad language. The story line kept you engrossed in Annie's story. She's overwhelmed, a mother with 3 kids, all she has to do for them, being a wife to a pastor that's never home b/c his "flock" keeps him so busy and she's a pastor's wife and expected to help with things at church also. It has mystery, romance, love for people that sometimes are hard to love like Annie's own mother and unexpected twist and turns! I encourage you to read Annie's story. If your a mom you'll relate and I think as a single mom raising a son on my own I really related to being spread entirely too thin! It really makes you think about your own pastor and wife. Maybe I should make a cassrole for them and take it one night b/c Annie's story makes you want to make their life a little easier even though it's fiction.
This book is good! But I kept thinking, "Boy, this couple really need to read the book about boundaries by Henry Cloud and John Townsend!" My own husband was a pastor's kid who complained that his father was never at home.
Every pastor needs to set a fair and balanced schedule of days and evenings when he is available for the church's needs and days and evenings when he is available for his own and/or his family's needs. If he doesn't take care of himself and his family he won't be able to take care of his church.
I do like the way the book shows what is missing in Michael's life and how he had come to the end of the rope and needed to give his life to God. Once he did, God took care of the bad guys...ha!

A thought-provoking insight into the life of a pastor's family. Do we as a congregation expect too much of our pastors so they have little or no time to devote to their own families? This runaway pastor's wife really made me think about the pastor's at my own church.
In this book, two lives that were damaged in their college days are brought face-to-face with the consequences of their actions in their youth. As their lives collide in this political thriller or whatever you choose to call it, God's love and redemption work all things together for good for His children in "The Pastor's Runaway Wife".

I picked this book from one of Amazon Prime’s monthly First Reads. I did NOT know it was Christian fiction and it was not so bad until about 75% into it and they made entire chapters about Annie’s mission to get Michael to pray for forgiveness. I literally couldn’t read anymore after that. It changed the whole vibe of the book. She leaves her husband for awhile just to be there to get Michael to pray? Nope nope nope. This could’ve been a good read without all that... and Amazon should’ve made it clear this was a Christian book during their First Read previews so I could’ve opted out.
Having several Pastor's wives in my family is why I chose this book. The first half ran true to many of their experiences. The whole last half of the book however seem forced and rushed. I get her needing a bit of a respite, my sister used to come to my house for a few days. The whole ending regarding Michael and his problems seemed forced. Also not sure about the son coming cross country either. Up to that I enjoyed the book and finished it, hoping somehow it would redeem itself, but it didn't.
This was definitely one of the best books I have read in a while. Because of rumors that I have heard about a "not so clean" film based on a similar story, I was a bit sceptical. However, I did my homework, and because I had already read, "Blue Christmas", by the same author, I trusted that this book would be in keeping with her inspirational theme. I was not disappointed! In fact, I loved this book so much, I am sure I'll be revisiting it again, and in a few years, sharing it with my daughters!
Having grown up in a minister's home, I can attest to and relate to the McGregor family's story. Even as an adult, this background influences my perception and experience with church. Pray for your Pastor's family and understand that being a "Pastor's Wife" never goes away, even after retirement. Being a PK (preacher's kid) is also a life long syndrome!
I absolutely loved this book! In fact it was so good that I think it should be a movie! I will be looking forward to reading more of Diane Moody's books. If you are a Christian and like to learn about the way the Lord works in our lives and like a good suspense story then this book is for you. The storyline was exceptional as well as the characters. If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would!!!
I wasn't expecting such a captivating novel when I picked this book. A Pastor's wife, overwhelmed by her life, and a man, betrayed by family and friends , become accidentally marooned in a place in Colorado. Neither was expecting the other to be present. Moving frequently between present and past, with twists and turns, spiritual and soul searching, this becomes a page turner.
Consider this; you are in a room, that is the plot of the book. There are many doors, which are the sub-plots. As you open a door and learn what is happening, you look forward to going around the room and continue to open more doors. Each entry spurs you on to another and another. That is what you will discover with author Diane Moody's book The Runaway Pastor's Wife. Start reading and opening one door at a time. Expect an adventure.
This is a tough review for me. It was ok - but some of the stories in the book were choppy and some were never resolved. I think the characters could have been more likable , instead of whiney.
The concept I thought was good - and the mystery surrounding some of the story kept my attention.
I listened on audible and perhaps it was the reader.
I’m glad I took the time to finish the book, just not one of my favorites
It was not what I expected it to be. The first part really intrigued me and made me think about all the pressures put on a pastor's wife. I really thought the author would send someone her way to help her work through them or give her some perspective, instead there was a twist to the story line. Not a bad read, just didn't go the way I thought it would.
The beginning grabbed my attention, however the book began to drag. I skimmed about 100 pages and read the ending. The ending was a surprise and not at all what I expected. I give the book 3.5 to 4 stars for the truly unexpected ending. I am on the fence if I will read more from this author or not.
I loved this book so much. But I feel like 3 characters didn't have a rightful ending. Which is Chet, the Mother & Michael's wife. We were just left hanging on what was to become of them. Their stories were yet to be fully told. Maybe there will be a follow up book? ~ Over all the book gave a really good message.
WOW! I was astounded at how good this book was! I don't think I have ever read such a complicated, mind bending, suspenseful book, that starred God in such a realistic manner! I loved it. Ms. Moody is to be congratulated! I am definitely going to see what else she has written!
This was different than I was expecting in a few ways, and I didn't see the ending coming (although I don't know how it didn't dawn on me 🤣) but I thoroughly enjoyed this!! I loved being in her head and I'm not a pastor's wife, but she expressed a lot of struggles that many of us can relate to. It was refreshing in my opinion.
