The Prophet's Gambit

Rate this book
Seventeen-year-old Aris has always been obsessed with dreams, even if she can't remember most of them. She's spent her life waiting for something to happen, chasing a memory always just eluding her grasp. That is, until she meets Alek—a boy with golden eyes and a knack for avoiding injury.

A tarot reading leads him and his friends to believe she's the key to finding Krysidia—the hidden realm from which their ancestors were banished—but only if Aris can learn to trust her newfound abilities does she stand a chance at fulfilling the deck's prophecy. To make matters worse, Lochlen, the only one capable of guiding her training, seems to have it out for her, and despite his efforts to keep his distance, Aris can't shake the sense of familiarity she gets when he's around.

Torn between a desire to prove herself and letting Alek continue to protect her, Aris must face the fact that her life will never be the same. Wherever magic goes, death seems to follow, and when Aris learns the car wreck that killed her parents was no accident, she realizes Krysidia is more than just a legend—it's their best hope of survival. That is, if it even exists . . .

From the moment I read the blurb I knew this would be right up my alley, and it really was, but it took it a hot minute to get there. That's really the only issue I have with this book.

It started off very vague, and I wasn't sure what exactly was going on for the first 20ish %. It was also kind of slow at the start, but eventually it picked up and the whole build up was worth it.

I am a hugeeeeee fan of stories that include dreams in such a way where two characters who haven't met, dream about each other and then eventually find one another in the real world. I will eat it up every single time, I'm telling you.

But here we have a little twist regarding that which I won't spoil. It wasn't explained how that twist "un-twisted" so I'm hoping we'll get some more on that in the sequel.

I loved Lochlen from the start, BUT I loved Alek from the blurb!! I am so sorryyy, he stole my heart first, but Lochlen is right behind him. His history with Aris is painful and makes for a perfect love triangle (another thing I'm a super-fan of).

I can't tell who she'll end up with, but I'll be happy either way, because both of them are wonderful.

Aris, as a main character, is fun to read about. Much like Alek, I too would follow her anywhere in less than a heartbeat. I can't wait to see her grow into her power.

Relating to that, the book happens in the span of around three weeks, so I'm glad that Aris didn't suddenly master her powers in such a short time frame. She still can't do much, and it feels realistic.

The plot was probably my favourite part, and the lore, and the characters...I MEAN EVERYTHING WAS MY FAVOURITE PART OK? No but, the plot was well-crafted, there were some mystery elements too, the lore had its own mythology and tied into existing ones as well, and the characters were of course a found family I'd love to be a part of. So it's hard to pick just one favourite thing.

We also got lgbt rep, Aris's adoptive dads, a non binary character (Jada, using they/them pronouns), and I believe Mirai might be sapphic, just based on the clues. There might be more I missed.

I had a really good time with this book, and I can't wait for the second. Ellie Evaris did such a good job with getting me invested and attached, I immediately went and signed up for newsletter updates because I WILL NOT BE MISSING WHATEVER COMES NEXT!!! I WILL BE SEATED.

As a side note, if you happen to like the Starcrossed series by Josephine Angelini, then you'll love this too. Similar vibes.

Thank you netgalley and hidden grove books for the ARC.

This book has such great potential. I love the characters, the storyline and the magic system. However, it is not without its flaws.

The first chapter could have been handled better as it is one of the most crucial parts in the story for its hook. But a lot has happened as if the author picked up on a scene from nowhere that I wondered if there was some missing pages that I didn't know. I understood it must have been done for the mystery but it just didn't work for me. And who was the dead woman at the beginning anyway? Why should she matter in the story? Not so much background was provided so it was hard to keep up with the subtle messages and hints of the past. I struggle with some vague details.

At first I thought her father is alive. This scene's from one of the earlier chapters. Chapter 2 or 3, maybe? He's supposed to give her a ride home from the barn. Until it was revealed later on that he died. I don't know if it was my fault for not understanding well or was it the way it was written? But oh, that moment of realization! David and Ashton are her "dads," her biological father's bestfriends. If only it was mentioned earlier.

The reason why the Anathemians were banished was revealed later on and I was surprised Aris did not question it as soon as she learned about them.

I so, so want to love this story a hundred percent. Everything about it. The plot. The dream concept. The chemistry and tension between the characters. But my mind's in a jumble just by reading this book. Most of the time I spent processing what I just read. Unclear motivations. Unnecessary subplots.

It must have been good if Evie and Aris' relationship was shown in a few scenes just so we can understand why Aris was reluctant to leave. I wanted to see their sibling connection, but unfortunately, there's nothing in the book. I didn't even remember they had a single scene where they talked.

And lastly, the biggest question of all: How are Lochlen and Aris' dreams connected? Is that a prophet thing?

One good thing in this book is the use of symbolism. Aris' dreams symbolizes something in her life, as evident in the story.

Wolf: Having a wolf dream where you are being attacked or chased by a wolf can be a way to bring attention to the ways you are being held back on your spiritual journey. This is often related to carrying the energetic burdens of others or feeling bullied, judged, or controlled by others.
Forest: betrayal and disappointment or care and caution
Lost shoe: people dream about losing shoes because they feel insecure, unprepared, stagnant, lack of support, and lost.

If you were to measure my obsession with this book on a scale of Love to I’m Tearing My Eyeballs Out, I would be on the manic end. I was immediately invested in the plot and the world building was so well done that I could grasp everything super quickly. I loved this book so much and knew, even while I was only half way through, that this would become one of my favourites. (I even accidentally dropped my phone over something Alek said to Aris during a storm). I’ll be forever mourning the romance that could have been between Lochlen and Aris, though (I’m their biggest fan) (I hope Lochlen gets the girl) (I’m a Lochlen girlie). All the characters were so well written and I loved reading about their journey to home, or, Krysidia, however, I will respectfully be needing a second book ASAP because that ending left me screaming and crying.

♡♡ I received an arc from netgalley ♡♡

*dramatic sigh* Oh where to begin! For starters, BEAUTIFUL COVER!

I really enjoyed the book. Literally the first chapter had me HOOKED. I thought it was very well written, though in the first four chapters I was confused on what was going on, but it quickly picked up from there. The descriptions felt so magical that even when I wasn't reading, my mind was still in that dream-like haze, I LOVED it!

Going on to the worldbuilding; I thought the world felt pretty vague but since it is the first book in a series (I'm assuming) there will probably be more to learn as the series goes along. I understood the basics of everyone's powers but somethings still just felt too convenient. By the end, I kinda hoped there was an actual threat that would make me panic waiting for the second book, but that was quickly resolved! The actual cliffhanger that we left off on is interesting, but it was already hinted earlier that something like that might happened so it just felt like mild tension for me.

For the characters, I thought there were too many and most of the relationships felt rushed. WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S BEEN 2 WEEKS?? By the end maybe 3, but it just feels so ??? that Aris would just be so willing to possibly risk everything for these people! I didn't understand why we got the teacher's POV, it seemed random (I get it but it still felt unnecessary). I feel like it would have been just as well explained through Aris's POV, maybe that way I'd care a little more about him.

Despite all that, I did love the main characters and their relationships with each other. They were all very unique and it was refreshing to read about their friendship. Also, I'm team Lochlen <3 and their relationship simply broke me. It was literally what hooked me in the beginning only to make me suffer in the end!!

Overall, would definitely recommend, I'm excited to see where the story goes next! [me realizing I probably have to wait a WHILE for book 2 since book 1 isn't even out yet :') ]

⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️

Anyway the review ends here. **SPOILER WARNING** if you care to read my random thoughts to quotes with absolutely zero context. This section is also obnoxiously long💀 I didn’t realize I have so many feelings and opinions but I like to keep memories. K byeeee.

“It could be fake.” Lochlen flicked his hood up and crouched to the ground, looking away as he spoke.

💀💀💀PLEASE

# 9. Chapter 9

> Aris hadn’t realized she was smiling, not until she noticed Lochlen staring at her.

💀💀

---

> “Sorry,” she said in the flattest voice she could muster. “Did you want some?” Aris traced the rim of her mug with a finger. “I would’ve made four, but then I thought I wouldn’t want to distract you.”

💀💀💀💀💀💀

---

Lochlen batted her hand away.

💀

---

> Mirai strode over to Lochlen and rung out her long hair over his head.

💀💀💀WHAT'S HER PROBLEM

# 10. Chapter 10

> Mirai looked at Aris differently this time. Her eyes were sort of glossed over, and when Aris met her gaze, Mirai looked away, her eyes darting over the water, the garden, the shrine, anything to avoid looking at the girl beside her—at Aris. At the first girl Mirai had met who wasn’t entirely human.

I KNEW I SMELLED SOMETHING FRUITY

---

> “It looks like we’ve got a new student joining us today,” the teacher said, and everyone took the opportunity to stare at Alek once again.

HECK! NO!

---

> “Aleksander Davenport.”

DAVENPORT💀

---

> “Have you ever watched a lightning storm from the top of a mountain?”

YOU ARE UNHINGED

# 16. Chapter 16

> Thunder cracked, and Aris lurched forward. At first, all she felt was warmth. She looked down to see her hand resting on top of Alek’s.

PICK ME ASS BITCH

---

> Aris touched her temple again. Her head felt as if it was being juiced, and all she could think about was whether a prophet’s brain fluids could be bottled and sold like potions at a magical lemonade stand.

WHY WOULDN'T LOCHLEN TELL HER ABOUT THIS?? WHY DOESNT ALEK KNOW ABOUT THIS??

---

> Lochlen had been right about one thing: she and Alek were perfect for each other.

DON'T PISS ME AWF

# 17. Chapter 17

> He needed Aris.

woah

---

> He needed Aris to choose him

---

> “The kettle popped,” Wyatt said cautiously.

# 18. Chapter 18

> “It’s fine, Carol, just leave.” He wielded her first name like a weapon. As if to remind her that despite his age, he was still a teacher.

SLAYYYY

> Harrison slowly raised his hands. “I just want to talk.”

HE'S SO WEIRD🤢

---

> skryer

whatever that means🥰

# 19. Chapter 19

> Lochlen weaved an arm around Aris and planted his hand on the counter.

what??

---

> “It worked, didn’t it?” Lochlen said. “You can’t just take a nap in the middle of the sidewalk, for fuck’s sake. We’re downtown.”

I told you Alek is unhinged

> “Lochlen’s brother had just started university,

# 31. Chapter 31

LEAVE JADA ALONE???💀💀💀💀

# 40. Chapter 40

> He was leaning against the mountain

LEANING AGAINST THE MOUNTAIN?

---

> She pressed her cheek against his chest, buried her fingers in his sweater. At first, Lochlen’s shoulders tensed, and she half expected him to push her away, but then his arms softened and molded to her shape. He held her gently at first, and then fiercely, like he never wanted to let her go.

i received an audio review copy from the publisher via netgalley in exchange for an honest review. this did not affect my rating.

aris has always been a dreamer, and now, she has a chance of adventure. alek believes that aris is the key to finding krysidia, from which his and his friends’ ancestors were banished. but first, aris needs trained. the downside to this is that lochlen, the only one able to train her, seems to have it out for her. still, aris feels an unexplainable familiarity toward him. now, aris must choose between safety and a desire to prove herself.

i think the main thing about this book that prevented it from being a full five stars for me is that i wanted it to go more in depth. while certain aspects were detailed, others were not. i think exploring the aspects that were a bit lacking would have better immersed me in the story.

with that said, there was so much about this book that i did enjoy. the plot was interesting, but even more than that, i just loved the characters and the dynamics between them. there was quite a prominent romance aspect in this book. i can’t wait to see where it, and the plot, goes in the next book!

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

If I had to sum this book up in one word, it would be vague. Everything was so, so vague.

The writing was promising. I find with a lot of first time authors, the writing and the dialogue can often times be clunky and awkward, but I did appreciate the writing in this story. Everything flowed well, the descriptions made sense and weren't bogged down or over-descriptive.

However, the story was incredibly hard to digest. It said so much for saying nothing at all. At the 20% mark, I had no idea why anything was happening. I had no hint at what the goal of the book was. I felt like I'd started the second book in a series without ever even glancing at the first book. It was a very frustrating process reading this book. I felt as though I had to keep going back to make sure I hadn't missed a part or accidentally skimmed over something at parts, because it felt like things kept cropping up out of nowhere without any foundation or even the subtlest of hints earlier in the book.

The magic system in this book is not explored or explained. A big thing is that Aris - the female main character - can't remember most of what she dreams. This is important, but we don't know why. We're never told, and to not be told something that is supposed to mean so much to the story was completely non-sensical.

The characters were done with too little depth for me, and I feel that has a lot to do with the number of characters. There wasn't enough time to flesh them out, and yes, this can be done in later books, which there definitely will be for this series since it ended on a cliffhanger, but not enough was given in book one to really get me invested in any of them.

I can kind of see what Evaris was going for with this, but the execution just fell short.

If you want a mysterious teen urban fantasy that doesn't deliver much in the way of information and you don't mind waiting until book two or even book three for that coveted information, then you'll probably enjoy this. It reminded me a little of the Crave series. It gave the same vibes.

I can’t explain how I feel about this book because I have no idea what the heck is going on. I’m completely lost in a dark maze with no sense of direction. It is weird how the writing is descriptive and yet vague. There is a lot of contemporary teenage chit chat then something about dreams, a ring and magical powers. First chapter was intriguing and love the cover but that’s all I liked. Like what is the purpose of everything? I’m always asking why? What is the connection? I don’t want to spend time trying to figure it out.

4.5⭐️ rounded up.

Wow. I’m so pleasantly surprised and in love with these characters. The unique storyline & magic system, the multi POV, the burn so slow but so good. I can’t wait to see where this world leads. This book should be on your radar if you enjoy:

YA Fantasy Romance
Academia Settings,
Found Family,
Slow Burn,
Hidden Worlds,
Ancient Magic & Lore,
Magical Realism but also High Fantasy Touches
Discovery of Power.

This one will be sticking with me and I can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy for my forever shelf. Ellie Evaris is officially on my list of authors I’d insta-read.

This book was on my most anticipated list so being able to get it early was the highlight of my month! I was super pumped to get into it and while I did really enjoy it for what it was, I will say this book was really vague. Every time I wanted more from the plot, setting, story, characters, I felt like I kept getting shorted in information. I think this book has a great potential and the story is fairly unique which made it super fun to listen to, but the vagueness of it made it difficult at some points to enjoy.

It was a fantastic contemporary fantasy that had everything I hoped it would, especially when it came to the characters! This is a great YA fantasy for all those who are looking for something new and more contemporary than the typical YA books!

Definitely worth a read!

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publishing team for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I’m not sure what to make of this book, I was so excited to read it, and somehow ended up dnfing it.

I stated this from the beginning four times, four. And every time I felt more lost than before, the writing is so incredibly vague. I kept reading the synopsis to see if I could make sense of it, but I just couldn’t. I’m so sad I didn’t like this, but not every book is for everyone, and I need to understand that.

This book is about Aris, a girl that’s been obsessed with dreams all her life. She mets Alek, who believes her to be the key to finding their lost city, and that’s how it goes from there on.

Again, I was extremely exited to read this, but the way the story is told doesn’t make any sense to me. I wanted to know more about Alek, but at the end, it wasn’t enough to keep me hooked.

THIS BOOK!!!

That is, if it even exists . . .

The Prophet's Gambit is the first volume of a new fantasy series by Ellie Evaris, an emerging author with incredible talent.

I didn't know what to expect from this book. The plot intrigued me right away, as well as the cover is the title, but I didn't know if it would fully match my tastes or not. Well, I loved it. From the first to the last page. It was really, really hard to put it away even for 5 min.

The author's writing is very smooth, involving so romantic.

It often happens that, when you are a beginner, you go to create dialogues that are not very dynamic and clumsy but this is not the case. The dialogues created by the author are extremely dynamic and well studied. And the characters😫😫😫

MAMMA MIAA

Although the characters are numerous, they are all well characterized and interesting. Unique!
It was impossible for me not to empathize with some of them.
Worldbuilding is not overly difficult to understand. I probably would have preferred to explain it in more depth, but it doesn't matter. However, I really appreciated it.

I got to ternare the reading of the ARC copy in e-book with listening to the audiobook and .... What can I say... An experience not to be missed! Read very well and very clearly. The narrator managed to captivate me and keep my attention high during playback. Good job!

The only negative note is the time frame. Sometimes it seemed to me that some events were very hasty or that too much time had passed between one event and another. 😰

It was, all in all, a compelling and super appreciated read. I can't wait for you to read it too!

I sincerely thank Netgalley, Hidden Grove Books, and Ellie Evaris for sending me the ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion. All the considerations are mine.

It's been ages since I found a good YA contemporary fantasy series and THIS was exactly what I needed to get back into the genre! I want to be a prophet now (and I think I might steal Lochlen's deck of tarot cards)

Albeit struggling with relatively long chapters at first (maybe it was the Kindle), the characters and the world-building had me on my tippiest tippity toes. The first chapter and the whole dream sequence, I was already a goner. I really wanted to read more of the dreams. And the mythology parts surprisingly had me more intrigued to dive deeper into the realm (I mean, how cool does 'Krysidian' and 'anathemian' sound)

But the best part for me, that ultimately made me love this book as much as I did, is the dynamic between the six main characters and their powers. AND I did not expect the minor twist drops towards the end (also love how there's a pronounciation guide at the end).

Also, I'm stuck in another love triangle 🫠 Although I have a feeling she'll end up with Alek, there's just something about Aris and Lochlen that has me chanting 'be still my heart'. I literally bookmarked every interaction between them and I almost cried when she finally said, "found you" 🥹

Gah - I'm too invested, I need the second book to drop in my lap STAT!

𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁: Stunning debut! Keep an eye out for this one 🪄

Very promising and intriguing storyline, a compelling magic system and a diversity of characters.

Right from the very first page, I was drawn in by the story. It is somewhat mysterious at the beginning, but that only makes you thirst for more. Everything also sounds very promising, from the storyline to the magic system and all the new characters being introduced. I absolutely adore how the real world is being combined with a magical one. Although in the beginning, it can all be a little confusing due to a lot of new names and characters being introduced in a very short time. Nevertheless you’ll soon get used to them and fall in love with the whole lot before you even realise it. The chapter headings are also beautifully designed. The writing style is also highly enjoyable and reads very smoothly. I combined reading the e-book and listening to the audiobook. The narrator also succeeds greatly in bringing the story to life.

However, the story could have used some more depth and details in both the magic system and the character relations. The thirst you develop at the beginning is not completely satiated throughout the story. I think this is also because the pacing is a bit unnatural/rushed. This results in some things staying really vague and other things happening completely out of the blue (all in about 2 weeks’ time), not making that much sense. Hence the 3,5/5 instead of 4/5 ⭐. I’d really hoped to learn more about the dreams and the magic in this book. On the other hand, this book is the author’s debut, so I’m absolutely confident that the next books will become even better and we’ll get to know everything we want to know in the next books of this series.

I think this is a really promising debut, with lots of positive aspects. I am very excited to find out what will happen next. I’d definitely recommend this book if you like an original magic system with roots in ancient stories, amazing characters, found family, a search for a lost land, villains lurking around the corner, self-discovery, budding romance, and so much more.

Thank you NetGalley and Hidden Grove Books for sending this audiobook for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
The Prophet's Gambit was my first ever audiobook and it didn't disappoint at all! The Prophet's Gambit is a contemporary fantasy YA book. There is a lot going on in the book and it switches between multiple POVs as there are so many characters in the book The beginning is a bit confusing but it starts with some mystery and action which I loved. As the book progressed it got easier to understand. Aris is the FMC who meets a mysterious guy Alec who saves her. After some revelations she gets to know she descends from Krysidia a magical, hidden realm and gets to meet Alec's friends who all are also descendants . She is a good character for the most part and she really wanted to learn how to protect herself and learn to yield her powers. I loved all the different powers that everyone and the magic system. and especially the dream world concept which is very a different and unique concept I feel like there should have been a little more world building and explanation regarding some events but hopefully we'll get to know more in the next book. I also think that Aris's relationship with her family, especially her sister could have been fleshed out more.
I was hoping there wouldn't be á love triangle but fantasy books tend to have that. I love both Lochlen and Alec and I honestly don't know whom to root for! I loved that Aris found true and good friends and I love t hat we get a found family trope. Overall it was very good debut book nd the narrator was great too! I think with the sequel it could be a great series.

Thank you NetGalley for letting me preview this book in exchange for an honest review!!! I LOVED this book. It had fourth wing level world and magic building that I adored. I also loved that it had a unique goal of trying to find a world where they were accepted instead of just being born into the fantasy realm. The magic system depends on rings even though more people have magic than there are rings. This creates a interesting dynamic where people would kill for these rings.

My only qualms is I wish alis and lochlan’s dream connection was emphasized and fleshed out more cause this was one of my very favorite parts. I also found it weird people didn’t hide the rings on their person like via necklace or something or wear a bunch of fake rings to hide them? Especially if it’s so dangerous? That bugged me. But overall I adored this book. Alis and Lochlan’s tension melted my heart. I want them to be happy so bad!! I’m also dying to read the next one even though this hasn’t come out yet!!!! THAT CLIFFHANGER !!

I received an advanced listener copy of this and the narration by Heather Masters was absolutely fantastic. She really nailed the various voices, making it easy to differentiate who was who. I couldn't stop listening. The story itself was engaging and I was invested in the characters stories. I loved the concept of a lost world and the hunt to find it, but I wish the we had a little more in the way of world building and better insight into how the magic system works. I didn't feel this was explored enough, especially in regards to Aris' dreams or more specifically the connection to Lochlen. However, this is a first in a series and I hope that the world and magic system are explored further in those books, but overall this was a really strong debut and set up for future books! It definitely left me wanting more.

Thank you to Netgalley and Hidden Grove Books for providing me with an ALC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book so much!! As Ellie Evaris’s debut novel, I can’t wait to see what will come next! The Prohpet’s Gambit is unique and a breath of fresh air in the book world. Ellie introduced unique and loveable characters, fascinating storylines with plot twists and suspense, and did so with her whole imagination and evident passion for storytelling. I loved all the descriptive details that Ellie included, which made me feel like I was right there with the characters!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who just can’t seem to find the perfect new book/series. For future readers, my favourite scene was definitely in Chapter 12! Happy reading!

When Aris meets a boy at a party, she didn't expect her life to change. At least not in this way. Alek protects her from unwanted advances, but soon she finds out he didn't do so naturally. He did it with magic. Alek and his friends are part of a group trying to find Krysidia, a place long lost, where they and their families can finally live in peace. Turns out, Aris has powers too. And not everyone trying to find Krysidia is playing nice.
I'm a bit on the fence about this book. I enjoyed the general story (love me some ley lines and tarot), didn't enjoy a ton of the characters. Some felt a bit on-the-nose-villain, like Aris' best friend, about whom I continuously asked myself why they're even friends, or Alek's grandfather. I did really like Lochlen (and his particular relationship to Aris) and Jada though. I listened to the audiobook, which might not have been best for this story - I think I would have been able to follow the story easier had I had it in writing in front of me. The audio production and the narrator did a good job though!

Teenage Mindy would have given this five stars. Adult Mindy isn't nearly in love with it.

This book had some wonderful things going for it. I love the concept of the 13 moons with the different powers. I really do want to know more about the world that all of these people are yearning to return. Unfortunately, I find myself wanting.

Wanting more depth to Aris's storyline. Wanting the dreams to be fully connected to the story at large. Wanting Evie to have more of a role throughout the book, instead of being more important at the end. Wanting to understand how abilities are passed on (because one of the characters confuses me and I feel like there's a plothole because of it).

There is a lot of potential in this book. I really do wonder if Book 2 will be better, since this one does a lot of background info-dumping. I just felt like this book was trying to achieve a lot, but only managed to have a great beginning and a good end. That middle area could have been managed better.

I mean, I assumed that she would have a training/learning journey, and we definitely got that. I was expecting some sort of love interest, and we got a love triangle so that's good. The bad guy was well-executed in that I could understand where he was coming from, and we got some insight into the potentially true bad guy (the Reaper).

Aside from the "wanting" thoughts I mentioned earlier, I think what got me is that Aris is kind of meandering for most of the book. She goes from place to place to learn more about her abilities or to get to know the new crowd, but she doesn't really have something pushing her and driving her to be better/do better. It's only the dreams/visions that egg her on. But, as I mentioned earlier, those dreams don't have a strong connection. I wanted to know how the dreams from the beginning of the book connected Alec and Lochlyn to Aris. (I apologize about the spelling as I listened to the audiobook).

What's with their ability to see her and remember her? But she can't remember them? Why is this such a huge deal in the beginning of the book, but then it's only casually brought up later on by Lochlyn? How come we don't go in depth into this? I feel like this should have been an All-or-Nothing situation. Either answer all of these questions or find a different way for the beginning of the book to happen (the prelude). And the author did explain it, then do note that I simply have no recollection of it.

With that said: Please note that I'm still left intrigued. I feel like the answers to all of my questions are coming - that this entire book one is really more like a prelude. There's a lot of people and concepts to get to know, so I can understand an author wanting to spread it out. I look forward to the second book and I hope she doesn't make us wait too long before it comes out!

If you made it this far, do note there is gender neutral representation! They are one of the characters of the main group. The book also has amazing dream symbolism and does incorporate tarot cards, both of which I greatly enjoyed.

Thank you, NetGalley, for a chance to read this book!

The Prophet’s Gambit - Ellie Evaris (audio book)

I was given an advanced copy of this audio book through Net Galley in order to provide an honest review.

Ellie Evaris is a Canadian author, who grew up in the middle of nowhere and used pen and paper as her escape. This is her debut novel.

Aris has almost finished high school, but she feels like she hasn’t found her place or her people. Has never felt quite like she truly belonged or fitted in anywhere. Her parents died in a car crash when she was much younger – her and her sister were taken in by their parent’s best friends – David and Ashton.

One night her life is changed irrevocably when she is dragged along to another party by her friend Hayley. There she meets a golden eyed boy – Alek, and his friends. She is immediately captivated by Alek and how he always seems to get out of any situation without so much as a scratch. But Alek’s friends Lochlen is very much captivated by Aris – the girl who has featured in his dreams for as long as he can remember.

But there is much more to Alek, Lochlen and their friends than Aris can imagine – and as it turns out more to Aris and her past than even, she knows. Alek and Lochlen have magical abilities – due mainly to the crystals that were passed down to them from their parents – much like the crystal ring that Aris was given. The crystal that had been her mother's.

Alek and Lochlen called themselves Anathemians – searching for their way home to a place called Krysidia. They didn’t know where the door to Krysidia was, but they knew it was somewhere nearby and they needed all the help they could get. So, Aris had to try and figure out who she really was and how to wield her powers.

Yet the only person that was able to help her with her powers was the dark and moody boy Lochlen. She swore he hated her but if she was to find out what really happened to her parents and her new friends find this place Krysidia – she had to try. The closer Aris got to the truth the more danger she and her new friends were in – but it also closer to finding Krysidia – which was looking more and more like their best chance of surviving.

“The Prophet's Gambit” is a young adult fantasy story that despite a slow start is spell binding and captivating. I did enjoy the book but that wasn’t until I was about a third of the way through it. It was such a slow build up to the action and a decent story telling pace. I do appreciate the author really set up and built the world and gave the reader a lot of background information – I just wished things moved at a faster pace. I could see where the story and what direction the plot was going to take at times, but it took a while for it to actually get there which was a little frustrating. The characters were very relatable - I enjoyed reading any scenes with Lochlen in them and I do hope as the series progresses, we see some good character growth for him. Overall, this book would really appeal to a YA audience and lovers of fantasy, and it did have a cliff hanger of an ending!!

Thank you yo NetGalley, Hidden Grove Books, Ellie Evaris, and Heather Masters (audio narrator) for the opportunity to read and listen to the audiobook of The Prophet's Gambit in exchange for an honest review.

For some reason, it was herd for me to get into this book. It was interesting. It was intriguing. But I believe there was a lot going on and I had this perception of what the novel would be versus what it was. There was a lot of school/contemporary aspects I wasn't expecting, though once the fantasy elements kick in, it really takes over. On a side note, Heather Masters did a wonderful job as the audio narrator.

Aris, a dream-obsessed seventeen-year-old, embarks on a journey that unravels the mysteries of her past and the hidden realms of magic. Meeting Alek, a boy with golden eyes and a curious knack for avoiding harm, thrusts her into a world where tarot readings and prophecies guide their quest to find the elusive Krysidia, a hidden fantastical world where their ancestors were banished.

As Aris grapples with newfound abilities and the weight of her destiny, she must learn to trust herself and those around her. The tension builds as Lochlen, her magic-using guide, stirs mixed emotions within her. Between Alek and Lochlen, there is a fun-filled potential love triangle, for fans of that trope. Secrets about her parents' tragic car accident emerge, revealing the perilous nature of their journey. When facts from the past twist to form a different image of the present, the future looks bleak, but Aris knows what she must do.

While I wanted to like the characters, there were so many more than the main three that it was hard to keep track at times (especially listening to the audiobook). While I enjoyed the relationships, the speed of which acting upon emotions occurred was rather fast. For some that is fun, but for others, it may take away from potential epic tension for romance readers when this is only the first novel of a series.

Really, a great novel for lovers of young adult fantasy, it just didn't resonate with me enough to pursue further in this series.

Thank you to Hidden Grove Books for an early digital copy of The Prophet's Gambit.
This is, by far, one of my new favourite books of the year and cannot wait for it to come out in October (will definitely need a physical copy of this). This books takes place in the modern day world but shifts between the reality and what I like to say is dream world.
The characters are very realistic and I enjoyed their portrayal throughout the book as well as their change as the story progresses. Aris, to me, is a very relatable character and enjoyed reading from her view as I saw myself in her. I really enjoyed the representation of panic attacks and not having a main character who is invincible. The group dynamic was written very well and actually found myself wanting to be there with them. The story itself, took a while to fully understand but the world building and magic element, to me, was very unique and immersive.
I thought the writing was beautiful, with it being atmospheric and descriptive. So much so I wished I could be in those ruins or in the cavern at the end of the book. The characters were written as real people not just fantasy characters with special powers.
I loved the romance as it was subtle and didnt take over the whole book. I have to say Lochlen was my favourite as he wasnt your typical moody love interest but had a more vulnerable side to him that only the reader really got to see. I
I cannot praise this books enough so thank you to Ellie Evaris for providing me with a new favourite!!!

I really wanted to like this one, the blurb sounds interesting and the cover looks gorgeous as well which makes me want to pick this one up. Unfortunately, I have a difficult time getting hooked into the story.

The world building is actually pretty interesting with a bunch of teenagers trying to find a way to secret world but the I was confused most of the time. It felt like I was thrown in the middle of a series which I know nothing about.

The story is told in multiple POVs, the characters are all different so it’s easier to differentiate them however it took a while for me to realize which POV is it. It would have been better if there’s a name of the character on the chapter heading.

I keep pushing through in hope there’ll be an explanation soon after. The explanation and the reveal comes near the ending by that time I wasn’t really interested in this story again.
This book has the potential to be a great one with all the elements it has but sadly this one fell flat. Moreover, the pacing and the writing style is not to my liking.

I received an advanced review copy for free through Netgalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Huge thank you to the author and publisher!

I was given an Advance Listener Copy from Hidden Grove Books.

Ellie Evaris has done an amazing job with this book. Congratulations to her.😘😘

I am reeling having just finished this YA read

Originally I was a little confused with all the characters and who was who, in the beginning. After maybe 4 chapters I could understand everything that was happening and it all clicked into place.
The idea of this book is like nothing I’ve ever read.
You made me cry with your characters, lust and laugh after them.
There was so many layers that I’m still getting my head around.
It’s been a long time since a YA made me feel like my life was nothing without this book.

It kinda does end on a cliffhanger though😩

I love the character- Lochlen/Aris/Alek triangle?
Forbidden love maybe? Idk 🤷‍♀️
Star crossed lovers
Fate?
Lost memories
Moon/crystal magic
Slow burn romance

If you loved the Shadow Hunter series, or maybe The Inheritance Games? - I think you’d love this

What a fun story! So let's start at the top. I love the cover. You know I'm a cover lover and that's what drew me in. I am not a pink person but I just absolutely adore it. I love the pink flowy dress very nice.

Now on to the rest, we have a debut author here in the young adult fantasy genre. That can be so hard to break into as it is such a popular genre and there is just so much out there. What you really need is something different that will catch the readers attention. I think this story did a great job at doing that. Was the story confusing in parts? Yes. I think there were bits that were a little much in the descriptions but not in the plot drivers.

We have a lot of characters to get to know in a short amount of time I feel like the author did a good job in making us understand fairly well the 6 main characters. Our story mostly revolves around Aris who has discovered she is part of this world of people with powers. These people are hunted by people who want to steal....their rings of power....they only have this power while wearing the rings or jewelry with the crystals from their world. These crystals are passed down through generations. BUT Aris' parents both died and didn't tell her or her sister squat so now she's got to figure it out.

In cases like this I wonder what the dads think? Aris starts changing from her normal routines, comes home at all hours and is hanging with a whole different group of friends. Do they think she is on drugs or something? Food for thought. Now, here is where things get interesting, we the reader, find out about the whole world of Anathemians as Aris is finding out. Which is choppy at best. The whole first act of the book is very confusing. There is a lot of information but not a lot of information and a lot of characters.

By the time we hit the last act everything falls into place, the world seems to make sense and all the puzzle pieces click together. This is not going to be the book that feeds you the story bite by bite, you're going to have to use some imagination and context clues to understand the world building.

We have a love triangle, that I only think Aris is fully aware of . We of course have Aris in the middle of these two polar opposite boys, Alek whom she meets first and Lochlen who is his seemingly darker opposite. Alek can't be hurt, though his power reminds me of a genies wish, there is darkness in the good things. So instead of him getting hurt, say if you punched him, you would some how be the one that got injured. His anger or emotions also tend to be a force, which I don't fully get, but when he has strong anger emotions they effect the world around him. Angry Alek in a bar = barfights. Lochlen on the other hand is the dark and broody one. He has heterochromia (2 different color eyes) and his power is similar to Aris. He also keeps everything close to the vest. He's my favorite one because love the dark and broody kid that swears all the time.

At the end of the day I absolutely love the unique aspects of the world and the concepts involved. There is so much that I don't know or don't understand but would love to know more about. I did feel like the ending was weird, the whole last act, but I think part of what happened was completely hidden from the reader so we'd be surprised. There is so much potential left in the story and the last act of the book drew me in that I almost forgot about the confusion of the beginning. I can't wait to read the next one.

I mean for one look at this cover! Beautiful!

This book suprised me in all the good ways.
Are you in the mood for a good fantasy that will transport you to a different world look no further.

Seventeen-year-old Aris has always been obsessed with dreams, even if she can't remember most of them.
But everything changes when she meets alek.
After a rather fortunate tarot reading the fate of the two is combined.. could aris be the key to saving the realm of Krysidia?
And who is Lochlen and why does it feel like she knows him?

Thanks netgalley for a earc.

Firstly, let’s talk about this cover! Love it, it is absolutely gorgeous! Secondly, the plot - I loved every second of this story! It is so unique and immersive. I loved all of the characters! I had to keep myself from listening to it during work! I am so excited to read the rest of this series because that cliffhanger… woah! I have a lot of questions on how some things played out but I feel like those will be answered in the book or books to come! All around amazing job! This was so good.
