Another great book from Steiner. This seemed slightly less of a unified offering than Psychic Retreats - it felt like a collection of issues reflecting common themes that were (or are) occupying his thoughts. I certainly enjoying reading the book and there were some great insights and no doubt lots of things I did not fully understand or pick up on! One thing that certainly impressed me was his humility and his willingness to recognise that the analyst does not always do or say exactly the right thing. It is easy to admit this possibility in theory, but Steiner is prepared to present and discuss clinical material where he feels he got caught up in the interaction with the patient. This is perhaps appropriate in a book that is largely about narcissism and shame, but I still think it is rather impressive.
