I'm getting dragged further into this story! I still love all the roses and this plot is getting more interesting as well. Also, nothing better happen to my cute blue rose!
The plot is moving at a really nice pace, the art is lovely, I feel this volume was a good improvement on volume 1! You get a lot more story and backstory in this one!!
So Volume 2 was more fleshed out in terms of the plot so I'm not as confused anymore. The artwork was once again, very very good and I just can't wait to get physical copies because they will look so adorable in my room. We learn the purpose of the blue rose, which really tore me up because he was actually one of my favourite characters in tis manga, his sweet innocence just made me instantly like him. UGH IT'S SO HEARTBREAKING. I hope his fate doesn't end as suggested in this volume. There is much more action in this one, compared to the first so don't give up if you didn't find the first volume to be good enough! CAN I JUST SAY AGAIN HOW PRETTY THIS MANGA IS. I wish I could draw like this, I might try and draw some of the characters actually when I have time ... perhaps make a bookmark. It's so beautiful, I will definitely be reading tha artist's other mangas and hopefully will have my own physical collection soon. Alhough I should probably get a bookshelf first because they would be too pretty to leave in a pile or box which is currently where the majority of my books reside. I'm liking the slight twist in the plot, it is definitely not where I was expecting this manga to go. ON TO VOLUME 3!!
Our star, Anise, is still searching for her choker with the help of the Rose Knights. A childhood friend appears and is one of the worst examples of type ever. In the midst of all this come some shocking revelations, some more shocking than others, and boy this volume makes a meal out of chocolate.
As before, this book is just going for it with wanton abandon and I think that energy carries it a long way in places where the story is a little thinner. I mean, they expand the premise out but it’s a reverse harem at the end of it all. Despite that, it all works pretty well.
Really the best thing about this book is Anise. She’s a great heroine - strong, stubborn, relentless in her pursuit of what’s right. When faced with harsh truths about things she doesn’t just accept her reality, she moves to change it and I love her agency. Her awkwardness in matters of the heart is a nice counterpoint to that.
Some of the story swerves work better than others. Anise’s old friend Haruta is an overly handsy jerk and when it’s revealed he’s a rogue knight (spoiler? Ish?) it’s about as surprising as the passage of time. Still, I like the addition of proper conflict to things. The knights aren’t exactly good at this and seeing them develop as a team is a smart obstacle to place in front of them.
There IS one genuine surprising twist towards the end, concerning one of our leads, but the problem I have with it is that there’s pretty much zero chance that the book is going to follow through with its implications. They get a bit of debate, but it doesn’t weigh things down like it should.
I do not approve of the renaming of St. Valentine’s to St. Chocolata (just... why...), though there are a lot of moments (some more insane than others) that result from it. Once the student council changes the rules so the guys have to give the girls chocolate (that’ll never work!) it becomes a cute twist on the premise that I was surprised I hadn’t seen before.
On the relationship front, it’s pretty obvious that the other goofs will get their moments, but Kaede is the love interest. Even though he’s a bit boring versus Anise, I like their bickering as an obvious defence mechanism over how much they like one another (the image of Anise angrily mawing down on his chocolate is one of my favourite moments in the book).
Anise’s dad is something else. I expect he’ll be gnawing some serious scenery come next volume. That’s all I have to say about him.
3 stars. This is a fun little read carried off by its heroine who makes it quite readable even with some parts are a little iffier. The art is better, the characters are fun. It’s not a classic, but I’m fine with what’s on offer here.
Even though Kiss of the Rose Princess Vol. 1 didn’t draw me in that much, I continued reading the series, because I had bought 3 volumes, they are quick reads, and I was on vacation. Mike and I were camping, and it rained almost every day. When it rains and you are camping, the best thing to do is to read manga in the tent. It’s just cozy and relaxing.
Volume 2 is better than Volume 1. There’s some actual plot this time. Anise is still worried about her missing choker and her father finding out about it, so she sends her Rose Knights to try to look for it. And during that time, we get to learn a little bit more about each of them, and what makes them unique as people. The tone is a little weird though. Kiss of the Rose Princess doesn’t really know what it wants to be, so we go from heartfelt and depressing moments to light-and-funny-and-not-at-all serious moments, but there’s very little transition between the two.
Anise learns that in order to stop a Demon Lord that is escaping his confinement, the Blue Knight will end up being sacrificed. That is, unless she steps up to the plate and becomes a true Rose Princess, fully embracing her new abilities and her control of the Rose Knights. And since Anise is a good person and doesn’t want any of her new friends to be sacrificed, she is willing to do whateve is necessary to save everyone.
The plot thickens in volume 2! We learn lots more, although the backstory about the demon lord and the sovereign and their origins are still very sketchy. Nevertheless, the story gets more interesting. I strongly dislike Haruto, by the way. Ick. Kaede and Matsuki are still my favorite knights. I feel bad for the blue rose. Anise is a good main character. I look forward to seeing her grow and change throughout the series. 4 stars!
The second volume provided a bit of the information I was looking in the first volume but I still felt like I ended this with a lot of questions. Also, this volume got a bit darker which I was a fan of. Despite that, there were still those silly and upbeat moments. This series has me intrigued and I want to know more.
I traded for physical copies of the first 2 volumes of this a few weeks ago. (This just reminds me how far I am on review eBooks! Having tablet troubles the last few months, so yeah.)
********************
I have read the first 2 Volumes, so I will be reviewing those 2 together here. I have been really enjoying this series thus far.
I do think the *White Rose* President Tenjou takes things too far - especially talking like he belongs in an erotica novel - but, I still feel like he has the best intentions at heart. I just really don't want Anise to end up with him.
I don't want Anise to end up with the *Yellow Rose* Haruto, either, though I can imagine the mangaka taking it there, since friends-into-lovers stories are popular. However, no matter how good of friends they were in the past, it does NOT excuse his actions now.
I really like the *Red Rose* Kaede. I know that he and Anise had a rough start. But, I get the feeling that he really likes her and has wanted to admit it to her a couple of times.
I feel bad for the *Blue Rose* Seiren, who has an allergy to roses, even though he is a Rose Knight. I also hate what he was designed to do and how they deceived Kaede by making him feel as though he really knew Seiren's past.
I also really like the *Black Rose* Mutsumi. (I am perhaps drawn to him, since Black Roses are my favorite flowers.) He seems a bit drawn into his shell at times. (Perhaps, he is a Cancerian? That would make sense.) But, he seems to really cherish Anise, anyways. He just isn't that trusting at first. He, however, seems to be opening up to her better, though, and protecting her well.
This series definitely keeps me interested and has me wanting to read more.
This time around, I appreciated how smooth the transition from comedy/slice of life antics to drama and high stakes was. Shouoto allows us to see more of the characters she's already introduced, and make Haruto a compelling one of his own (despite his place in the plot). I especially liked how Anise wanted to make a decision on her own vs. being dictated by the Society or her father. That already is impeccable growth for her.
Does the introduced information come off as an info dump? Yes, which is why I docked a star from my initial rating. The story is at least progressing at a great pace. Shouoto's art continues to remain consistent, and her characters are strong enough to keep me invested in continuing with this re-read. It's time for our leads to put their best feet forward if they need to accomplish what's to come.
First Read Review (August 11th, 2015):
Original Rating: 5 Stars
Plot starts to sprout up, and it was SO interesting. I was engaged in every page, and the comedy was pretty funny.
Same pretty art and same boring story. Things started to improve near the end, when Anise and her Rose Knights had something to battle but themselves, but I probably won't keep reading unless the library gets additional volumes in the series.
I'm definitely liking where this is going. The characters are growing and the plot thickens. I can't wait to get the next volume! Also, I really love Mutsuki!
We're still looking for the missing choker and suddenly there's a new transfer student, who knows Anise and also likes her and... Let's just say, it's kinda obvious from the reader's perspective that he's going to be a problem... even before the foreshadowing actually starts to get heavy.
3.5 - Strangely funny. This is such a clear introduction to the plot that it’s painful. It did surprise me with some events, but if you read this genre a lot, you might have guessed them already. The plot is pretty fast paced and maybe a little TOO fast for me.
*** slight spoiler *** Still kind of dorky that she’s looking for the choker. -_- I mean, I get it, but seriously. Just own up to it. Tell them what happened and deal with the punishment. *** end of slight spoiler ***
much better! Dunno why volume 1 of so many mangas is always bleh and then the series ends up being just fine, but I've seen it happen so many times that I just know now to give it two volumes before deciding.
I really like how there's serious and dramatic stuff without the story taking itself too seriously. Anise is really growing on me. I have hope that this series will continue to be an enjoyable read.
Volume 2 of Kiss of the Rose Princess was just as fun and unique as the first! Things are getting more intense, and I loved learning more about the Rose Knights and their bonds with Anise. The new character dynamics added a lot of drama and mystery, and I’m really curious about Anise’s past now. There’s a good balance of humor, romance, and magical action that keeps the story exciting. The worldbuilding keeps expanding in interesting ways, and I’m hooked on finding out what happens next!
I just have one thing I want to point out... blue rose gets kidnapped. You still have his card. Why not just kiss it so he's there with you........ like you don't need to go on a huge mission to save him when you have his card to summon him lol Maybe it'll be explained in the next volume I just wanted to know if anyone else thought of this lmao

Really good story building for a second volume. It moves along at a steady pace. The artwork is consistent and attractive. I actually like Anise because she's surrounded by all these beautiful boys and (for the most part) not the least bit distracted by it and tells most of them off.
This one got better as it went through. Still not amazing story telling, but it was more interesting. Though a part of this made no sense, which is why it still couldn't be 5, but that would be a spoiler.
I liked volume 1 but I don't think I'll be continuing the series past volume 2. I find the pages a bit too crowded with art and text to read comfortably, and I'm not a fan of a lot of the characters. The dad is so weird!
