On a rainy day, a man pines for the love of Rani Shyamala, who he reckons he has lost forever. The story begins with him describing their first meeting in a hotel in New Delhi. Their lives get entangled for the next two years with whiffs of love in between, but the man is never able to call her his own, for her past chases her like a demon and eats away her capacity for love. In the end, Shyamala gives up the desire for happiness by submerging herself in a pretension of gaiety. She becomes a prostitute, and leaves.

One of the most beautiful portrayal of pain, helplessness, grief, and dynamic human emotion.

आर्थिक न भी सही, भावनात्मक व्यापार, यद्यपि यह अर्थ हमारे अस्तित्व से ऐसी बुरी तरह चिपक गया है कि हम इससे भावना को मुक्त रख ही नहीं पाते। इस व्यापार में माल नहीं बेचा जाता या ख़रीदा जाता, बल्कि भावना का क्रय-विक्रय होता है।
हमारा समस्त जीवन ही लेन-देन का है, और इसलिए झूठ की इस परंपरा को तोड़ सकने की सामर्थ्य मुझमें नहीं है।

भगवतीचरण वर्मा हिंदी साहित्य का विख्यात नाम है।
उनका ये छोटा सा उपन्यास बहुत कुछ कह जाता है। जीवन के मानी, ममता और क्रूरता के बीच घटता जीवन साफ़ साफ़ लिखा है। हमारा समाज भले कितनी ही मुक्ति की बातें करले, आर्थिक विषमता तले क्रूरता घट रही होती है। किताब १९६० में लिखी गई परंतु आज भी उतनी ही प्रासंगिक है।
पुरानी हिंदी और नई विचारधाराओं से प्रेम करने वाले जरूर पढ़ें।

एक सीधी कहानी है। ज्ञानचंद एक धनी व्यापरी है जिसका रानी श्यामला के साथ प्रेम संबध है। लेकिन फिर श्यामला उसे छोड़कर चली जाती है। वो क्यों जाती है इसी कि कहानी ज्ञानचंद पाठक को सुनाता है।
उपन्यास मुझे औसत से थोडा ठीक लगा। यह पठनीय है और एक बार पढ़ा जा सकता है।
मेरे पूरे विचार इधर पढ़ सकते हैं:

A simple book with rather very basic story wherein the lady is dragged into prostitution so as to satisfy her basic needs of bread and that also by her husband who dies during the story line up. Gyan Chand is kept wondering about her. But in the end he gets a lesson that life is all about loosing people. We keep on loosing people through out life.

A small novella about a women uprooted by partition and thrown into prostitution. It is essentially a love story that makes you hate money.
