I was born and brought up in the north of England, and worked for many years as the managing director of an interactive media company. I wrote every day - everything from creative proposals to user manuals - but most exciting of all was writing interactive dramas - including for the Cluedo (Clue in the US) interactive games. I was fortunate enough to sell my company in 2000 and we moved to Italy where we bought and restored an old country house.

I have published six full length novels and one novella, and my seventh Come a Little Closer is due for release in 2018. I now live on the beautiful island of Alderney in the Channel Islands, where I write full time.

This was an outstanding and disturbing story of obsession and abuse of power. Jo Palmer and her family - partner Ashraf (Ash) Rajavi and 7 year old daughter Millie are just enjoying a quiet family dinner when a knock at the door signals the complete unravelling of Jo’s life. Detectives are at the door to arrest Ash for suspected abuse of Millie. Ash is not Millie’s biological father but got together with Jo when Millie was a baby and loves the child dearly. Jo cannot believe Ash would do such a thing. But this is only the beginning.

Next comes another detective and a social worker to take Millie away for questioning. No, Jo is not allowed to accompany her. It will all be done very sensitively by professionals and Millie will be back within a couple of hours. Well, three hours pass and there is no word. Distraught, Jo rings the police only to learn the horrible truth - there was no arrest of Ash and no questioning of Millie. It seems this was a very sophisticated kidnapping. But why?

DCI Tom Douglas and DI Becky Robinson are immediately on the job. They run a very slick police operation. If someone in my family was kidnapped I’d certainly want them on the job. There was no damaged coppers here, just outstanding professionalism on display. It’s actually a pleasant change to read about such professional police work! Nevertheless they are a long way from unravelling this one. There was no ransom demand, no apparent reason for the kidnapping and no real suspects although some of Jo’s friends were acting a bit suspiciously.

I won’t say any more as I highly recommend you read this for yourselves. It is the ninth in the series but works very well as a stand alone. Although it is a nerve-shredding story there is no gore or gruesomeness or animal abuse, just a Machiavellian plot by an evil and obsessive person.

It’s always a highlight of my year when a new book by Rachel Abbott is published but even more of a thrill when it’s a new Tom Douglas book! This is the 8th books in the DCI Tom Douglas series and it’s just as brilliant as ever! I am probably a little bit in love with the Manchester detective but that doesn’t distract me from the twisty cases he has to solve, especially when they hit a little bit too close to home for Tom.

Jo Palmer lives an enviable lifestyle with Ash, her partner and her daughter Millie until one night the police come calling. They take away Ash, accusing him of a heinous crime and then social workers take Millie. But when Jo tries to find out more about when they will be home, her entire world falls apart.

Jo was a brilliant character who I took to immediately. Her increasing panic as she realised things weren’t quite as she had thought was perfectly delivered by the slow unraveling of the secrets that undermine her relationship with Ash and her confusion about why her best friend was so obviously lying to her. Jo felt realistic and her actions matched the personality that was portrayed throughout the narrative, even if I wanted to scream and shout at her not to do half the things she went ahead with! But a mothers determination can’t be shelved when her child is in danger and I knew she would do everything in her power to keep her child safe.

It was good to catch up with Tom (sigh!!!!!) and Louisa to find out how their relationship was developing and we get to find out a little more about another family member too. No spoilers here though!

I think you can read Right Behind You as a stand-alone as the main focus of the book is the case involving Jo and her family but you may want to catch up on previous books to get some of Toms backstory. And if you’ve not read the previous books then WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?! Rachel Abbott has the much envied talent of being able to write complex plots with engaging characters that grab you from the very first page. Right Behind You was no exception and I absolutely loved it from start to finish.

Highly recommended by me!

Just Okay...

I've read numerous books by Rachel Abbott and enjoyed them, but this is the second one that I've completed recently and find them lacking. Overall, I think that she is a good suspense writer, but the funny thing about fiction is even though we know it's not true, it still has to be believable on some level. Even when I factor in the latitude that a fiction writer has to create a bit of the unbelievable, there are parts of this story that is too much, particularly the end. It was silly and ridiculous and just served to make me cranky. A bad ending can ruin an otherwise good book. I bought it because of all the rave reviews and really, I don't quite get that. Maybe I'm beginning to out grow these types of books.

On my fish what a bore

Firstly you never identify with any of the characters in this book, writer does very poor job of giving anyone an identity,so you don't empathise at all.So many stupid red herrings,I kept checking to see how much was left and have up completely half way through, the mothers monologues stating the SAME emotions chapter after chapter with nothing added to the plot. Then some random underworld crime boss added just left me wanting to move on and find a proper thriller to read.

#40 Rachel Abbott Einu tau iš paskos
⭐⭐⭐⭐

Right Behind You sees the very welcome return of Tom Douglas - I do love a Tom Douglas novel. This is brilliant and tense novel full of mystery, misdirection and mistrust. I really enjoyed it.

Imagine the scene. You've just enjoyed a lovely dinner with family when you get a knock at the door. Two police officers, wanting to take your partner in for questioning. Two more people saying that they need to speak to your young daughter about alleged abuse. Traumatic enough right? Well imagine that this is the last you see of them and your partner and your daughter are now missing. This is exactly what happens to our protagonist Jo whose entire world is torn apart in one single night. So who do you turn to when you don't know what has happened or if you can even trust the police?

Well, that's where Tom Douglas and his DI Becky Robinson come in, and it's a most perplexing and complicated case for them to handle. I love the way in which Rachel Abbott structures these stories, making them primarily about the victim with the police investigation and the lives of the officers involved part of the story but only in a really secondary role. You get to know a lot more about the victims, the whys and wherefores of their lives in a bid to understand what is happening to them. Jo's does not, on the surface, seema . very complicated life but the more we get to know, the more you see the very many motives that could be in play in this case.

I do love the characters of Tom and Becky. Tom plays a kind of second fiddle in this case, his home life taking precedence to an extent as his partner is due to give birth, but Becky Robinson is such a strong character herself she is more than capable of carrying this case and providing the support that Jo needs. The author has created a diverse and very likeable team here, and you are with them all the way as they try to uncover the vital clues to solve what is happening and save Jo's family.

This is a very complex and layered case, and clues are carefully fed to you as a reader until have the full picture. We also see a familiar face from Tom's past return to provide some leads into what is happening, leads which have a surprising links back to previous novels. There is a constant sense of threat and tension and the scenes in which we see Jo's daughter Millie are packed with emotion. You can feel her fear emanate from the page. Told through the eyes of such a young child, the simplicity of this part of the book is quite impactful.

The pacing is spot on, the case and the underlying mystery intriguing. With so many people around Jo keeping secrets it is hard to know which one to trust and you can feel that growing isolation in her character build as the story progresses. With an conclusion that is as action packed as it is surprising, the ramifications of this case are quite stark and it seems no-one will walk away completely unscathed. Top stuff. Another absolutely cracking Tom Douglas thriller.

Do mrocznych historii kryminalnych pióra Rachel Abbott można powracać z prawdziwą przyjemnością.

Ta brytyjska autorka z prawdziwą wprawą prowadzi kolejne fabuły, burzy kolejne życia swoich bohaterów i wywraca wszystko do góry nogami. Z początku wydają się ofiarami niesprzyjających okoliczności, by z czasem nabrać rumieńców i dwuznacznych kolorów. Moralny konflikt to podstawa opowieści tej autorki i sposób, by utrzymać czujność czytelnika, postawić jego wyobraźnię na ostrzu noża i zadać te najważniejsze pytania. Nie oczekujmy oczywistych odpowiedzi!

Lektura kryminałów Rachel Abbott to prawdziwa czytelnicza radocha, a seria z Tomem Douglasem wciąż potrafi zaskoczyć. I warto czekać na kolejne tomy.

DCI Tom Douglas is back to solve a new mystery. This time there are two cases, and DCI Douglas will have to stretch to solve both of them.

Jo’s life is upended in a matter of minutes. Ash & Jo are a regular couple with their issues and, disagreements & their love for their daughter is immense. Ash is the perfect father to Millie. He also has a kid sister and a brother and, they both love Ash for an amazing brother he is! Jo is portrayed as a strong-minded woman and keeps her cool in the face of her worst nightmare.

Tom Douglas and Becky, along with their, team put in their best efforts to solve the case. At the same time, Douglas also has to deal with some of his issues.

This book has two storylines, one with the main story of Jo, and the other part relates to Tom’s history. The book gives enough background for the first-time readers to understand Tom’s backstory. The story revolves around family, love, obsession, and things we do in a moment of weakness.

The book fast-paced and has a mystery that will baffle you. The twists and turns are unpredictable. The characters and the misdirections will pull you into the book. The ending comes as an apt conclusion, along with some food for thought. Rachel Abbott's storytelling techniques are remarkable, and the mystery will keep you on your feet.

Right behind her is an apt title for a book that will keep you guessing until the last page!

I liked the main character Jo, and the detectives, Tom and Becky. But Jo’s partner Ash was a self-centered jerk. If he would have come clean earlier, they may have been able to find Millie sooner. He claimed he loved her so much. But I don’t think a dad would keep any information secret if it would help find his child. And, Ash complaining about his injuries, and how hard it was for him? How could he even think of himself at the time when they didn’t know where Millie was?
I liked the story but there were way too many details about things I didn’t care about. I just wanted to get to the point and find Millie.

And, I had not read the previous books in the series. I still was able to follow what was happening and did get a brief overview of what happened in the past with Tom and his brother. I wasn’t lost, but I didn’t feel I knew the whole story. It would have been better to read the other books in the series first. But I did like Tom and his family, especially his daughter Lucy. And, I liked Becky she seems very compassionate to Jo and her other co-workers.

Towards the end, the search for Millie, however, was quite unbelievable. Jo and he ex – Steve - find what the cops cannot? Seemed almost too easy for them. But the police had been investigating all that time. Didn’t seem plausible.

And the very end was terrible, a huge let-down. The scenario Ash asked Jo to do was totally ridiculous. I cannot see any wife agreeing to it. The story was not finished, you are totally left hanging. I know what I wanted Jo to do. But it’s left up to the reader to decide.

I would like to thank Black Dot Publishing for sending me an advance copy of this book.

Another fantastically engaging book by Rachel Abbott about Tom Douglas and his hard working team.

The characters are so beautifully developed and they feel like real, breathing people. My favourites are still Tom and Becky and how they have both progressed and grown as characters across the range of books. Their professional relationship has been a pleasure to watch growing and by this book, the strength, loyalty and mutual respect is really evident. It is pleasing to find out how their personal lives are bringing them happiness and contentment, and I find their friendship refreshing and solid.

Also within the first few pages, I empathised, understood and loved Jo, the main protagoniat. She is a character you can imagine being friends with and someone I truly admired because of her strength and bravery.

The elements of the story were so clever and as usual, the narrative led me through cleverly interwoven ideas that swept me along and made this another book of Rachel Abbott's that I just couldn't put down. I was enthralled from the first revelation of the police and social workers, and I still didn't realise the twist until it was revealed - a fact I love because I truly enjoy this genre of book and have become harder to surprise - this was certainly achieved!

I've been an avid reader of Abbott's books since her first and I am such a fan. If you haven't read her other works, put them to the top of your reading pile - you won't be disappointed!

Kažkas stebi Džo, laukdamas/a tinkamos progos.

Another great DCI Tom Douglas novel! Jo’s partner and daughter have been kidnapped & the police are at a loss at the MO in this case. Secrets and lies come to light in this fast paced suspense thriller! Proud of myself as I did see the two twists with Tessa and the “recruiter”!! 🤣 Always enjoy the intertwined storylines with Tom and his brother Jack — good to see the continued focus throughout each novel. 4.5*

Wow! Rachel Abbott has done it again! Right Behind You is pure perfection! Such a brilliant original idea for a story and Abbott executes it perfectly. The writing, the tense atmosphere, I was hooked from the very first page and just couldn't put the book down.
It was also great to catch up with Tom and Becky again. Their partnership is great, The dynamic of that duo is fantastic and it's great to see good coppers doing their job well.

Once again Rachel Abbott proves why she is one of the best crime fiction writers around and as always it’s a pleasure to sit down with DCI Tom Douglas and catch up on his life and try to solve a crime or two.

Right Behind You is the 9th book in the DCI Tom Douglas series and Rachel Abbott is amongst a small handful of authors that I would read without even glancing at the blurb!

All of these books work exceptionally well as standalones and if you haven’t read any yet, you really should – I always start a series at the beginning and thoroughly recommend all 9 books.

In Right Behind You we meet Jo Palmer, a part-time actress, full time mummy to daughter Millie and loving partner to Ash, a successful paediatric surgeon. On the surface Jo seems to have it all until one night there is a knock at the door and her world is turned upside down, inside out and ripped apart at the seams when the police arrive to accuse Ash of an unspeakable crime against her daughter and social services take Millie away for questioning.

As a mother and wife, my heart was literally beating out of my chest, it was heart-breaking to see Jo’s life fall apart and then the realisation that not everything is what it seems, especially when she rings the police station a few hours later to find out where her family are and there is no record of any arrest.

Another page turning, knicker-gripping thriller from Rachel Abbott and I can’t wait to read book 10.

Firstly I want to thank Black Dot Publishing for sending me an advance review copy, as I believe that this book is Ms Abbott's best yet from her excellent Tom Douglas crime fiction seies.
I'll say in advance that I won't be giving away any spoilers.
I love reading books which demonstrate how appearances are often not what reality actually is and Right Behind You does this perfectly with what appears on the surface to be a perfect household, Ash a paediatric surgeon, his actress partner, Jo and her 7 year old daughter Millie who is much odored by both of them. To say that Jo's world is totally turned upside down and inside out one ordinary evening is a massive understatement. Full of twists and turns with Tom and Becky and their team working tirelessly on the case that occurred on this night.
It's been a while since I've read a true unput downable book but this is definitely one. I especially loved the ending as it is totally unexpected and would result in endless long discussions with other readers about what you'd do in the same situation. It ended in a hugely surprising personal dilema which I LOVED.
Do yourself a massive favour and read this book and encourage your friends to read it too so you can compare what you'd do in this scenario.

Jo and Ash have the perfect relationship, or so it seems, until Ash is accused of crimes against Jo’s young daughter, Millie. Then Millie goes missing. This story is about the search for Millie.

Jo is our main character and detectives Tom Douglas and Becky are investigating the case. It soon becomes clear that neither Ash nor Jo’s best friend are telling the truth. Could Ash’s adult brother and sister be involved? And then there’s Jo’s ex who is thrown into the mix and he’s angry because he wanted access to Millie...

I enjoyed following the hunt for Millie and Jo is a great character, very believable and very emotional.

Why 4 stars instead of 5? I'd have liked the police to do more actual investigating. In fact, it’s Jo, with a little help, who finally understands who has taken Millie and why.
The book has great pacing, great characters and is excellently written and I shall be adding it to my favourite’s list for this year.

Rachel Abbott has done it again. She’s had me on the edge of my seat. Jo’s seven year-old daughter Millie and her partner Ash are taken away by police and a social worker. But something isn’t right – and Jo’s beside herself worrying about Millie. Suspicion mounts and it becomes a very exciting and at times scary story. I sometimes wanted to shout at Jo to go to the police but how would any of us cope faced with this situation? Tom and Becky, our police friends from previous books, are somewhat hampered by her decision to go it alone. An exciting story and well up to the author’s usual high standards. Highly recommended.
My thanks to Black Dot Publishing for an advance copy of the book.
