Life imprisonment has a whole new meaning when you live for centuries...
It's been fifteen long years since vampire Cord Kilpatrick was sent to prison for his business partner's disappearance. Chancellor Olivia McCabe is the only investigator who doesn't think he's guilty...and she's the one woman he can't stop thinking about. When Olivia gets the chance to prove his innocence and has him released into her personal custody, Cord is tempted by the beautiful vampiress more than ever. Can he hope to find salvation from his past and the passion he's longed for in Olivia's arms?

4.5 stars This Nocturne Bites begins with our hero Cord on a chain gang swinging a pickax.
He was wrongly convicted 15 years ago of murder and as a vampire that's an instant death sentence, so while he's on Death Row, his fiancee leaves him, takes his money, takes over his clans business, and his family disowns him. The only person who seems to even care is Chancellor (half-human/vampire) Olivia. And the best part? She was part of the prosecution!
Olivia was part of the team that put Cord away, but she'd known from the beginning he was innocent. She just had to prove it. Once the body of his best friend shows up fifteen years after his supposed death, all kinds of questions are raised, and Cord, being imprisoned, has an airtight alibi. Olivia gets him free, but how can they prove his innocence?
My favorite thing about this short story was that Cord had to work at being a free man. What I mean is that he had flashbacks to prison, he had to work at not walking with a shuffling from having his feet chained. I guess I like that he didn't get out of prison and suddenly he was perfect hero material-he was damaged goods, he'd had his throat slit and his vocal chords sliced changing his voice forever.
This is a 4.5 star book mainly because Alexis Morgan did this all in a short story that took me a half hour to read. I mean that's a lot of plot packed into a Nocturn Bite!
Excellent short and great for anyone who loves Alexis Morgan's New Eire vampires, or just anyone who loves vampires set in a slightly different world full of Vampires, Chancellors and humans.

This was my first Harlequin Nocturne Bites ebook and I have to say that I really liked this short read. The author makes you feel for the main character Cord to the point that I was going YES!!! I really enjoyed this book.
This quick read returns us to a character mentioned in the first book ‘The Vampire’s Desire’.
Olivia McCabe is a chancellor 2nd only to Ambrose O’Brien. She is sent to a vampire prison to release a prisoner who has just been exonerated after fifteen years: Cord Kilpatrick. It seems his partner whom they thought he’d killed fifteen years ago just died a few days ago. Now he has to acclimate himself to his old life and claim his property from the clutches of his ex-fiancé.
Through the whole ordeal Olivia was the only one who believed in him and visited him and the sparks between them set off a firestorm.
Fave scenes: Cord & the staircase, Cord pacing the bedroom floor and Olivia confronting Francine.
ahhh... Olivia, a Chancellor (lawyer/judge/executioner - part human/part vampire)... for 15 years she had worked on Cord's case... he had been convicted of murder when his business partner went missing - but as no body was found, he was doing hard labor - to be executed when his body was found...
and he is pounding the asphalt with the other prisoners, when Olivia shows up - the last time a Chancellor interupted a chain gang, it was to execute him... he was glad his pain was over... but instead, he is free - his partner's body showed up, and it had only been dead 10 days - and Olivia was taking responsibility for him until all of the legal details were worked out..
The 2nd night of freedom finds Olivia & Cord at a cabin left to him by his grandmother... they spend a pleasant night together - and when it's time for bed, and Cord offers to take the couch, Olivia invites him into the bed - he says he doesn't think he can control himself, and Olivia tells him she doesn't want him in control... they share some passionate kissing, but Cord pulls back - honorably, he won't take Olivia until he is rid of this legal engagement...
Cord's fiance had taken over the business - the family/clan business - due to a clause in their nuptial agreement; and when she comes to Cord, and tries to pick up their relationship, he & Olivia make it plain that he wants her gone - she returns a bit later with the intention of killing them, but doesn't succeed - and she tells that she and his partner were lovers first, but as his partner was human she would not entertain marrying him... so they concocted a scheme to make it look like he was dead & Cord convicted... but her lover was draining too much of her money, so she killed him...
and after her arrest, his family coming to him to offer apologies (some more sincere than others)... Cord claims Olivia as his... ahhhh
