This volume picks up six months after the end of the last volume and it is definitely a hiccup volume as really nothing much goes on.

A new arc begins

There was A lot of content this volume. Not to mention we received a time skip. New characters and new enemies abound with some new allies thrown into the mix. Loved the backstory with Shiba's origin.

Ugh, been a while since I've last read this manga, so my memory is a bit fuzzy. Looks like a paused after the end of the arc with King, rather than in the middle of an arc, so that's good.

This volume opens with a flashback of Shiba telling how he gained the Holy Bring / Rave, and it was pretty cute. I was "moved" when Shiba received the stone from the Knights.

Let has joined the team, and this arc introduces Ruby, so we're closer to a full party!

The manga still feels rather a lot like One Piece crossed with PS1 Final Fantasy games. Interestingly, we get a gang of horror-themed enemies (a ghost/gorgon chick, a werewolf, and a Frankenstein's creature, led by a dude with a Jack-o'-lantern mask), about six years ahead of Thriller Bark in Oda's manga. So, good for Mashima, I guess?

This volume is somewhat "quiet," but there's a fair bit of setup. The fall of Demon Card has allowed a handful of smaller crime organizations to become more prolific, including the aforereferenced Doryu Ghost Attack Squad. Other teams, Onigami and Blue Guardians, haven't been shown to us yet, but will be major players soon. We are also teased with a new strong enemy, unrelated to this trio of gangs, but whom may be used as a weapon against them (not unlike how the Shichibukai work in One Piece, actually...). This dude is, I think, Lucia Raregroove, who iirc is the next major enemy in the Symphonia Arc (which we've entered with this volume).

Its the beginning of a new arch..

I'm voting lower on this Volume in particular primarily because it delved too far and too long into the historical portion of the story - which occupied more than half of the book before kicking of the new story. Is it bad - not particularly - but was it relevant - at this point of the story - probably not..

Having said that - it did start to pick up steam towards the end of the Volume - and it was awesome to see the author hint at the general strategy of how Law Enforcement prefers to organize the Underworld - better to deal with one big Organization tha multiple small splinter groups that may or may not be worst off.

All in all - looking forward to the new arch

The tragedies of last volume linger strongly as we open a new story arc of this series! I would not have thought from volume one to this current volume so much would have happened. It seems like the quick trip back to Garage Island is the exact way that the new story should begin. We continue to get revelations such as how Shiba became the very first Rave Master. Gambling bug to end a financial situation also come up in this volume. Fun is the theme and while Hiro Mashima has not perfected his fun time (as he has in Fairy Tail) you see all the strengths in this volume.

At the end of Volume 9 I had no idea where Mashima could take the story. It seemed he had painted himself into a corner, perhaps not knowing if he'd get to go past volume 9. He expands the story by making all the smaller gangs that were held in check by Demon Card now vie for position at the top. Our main characters also have to finish finding the Rave in order to get all the answers to all their questions. It continues to be a silly and weird ride.

Hiro Mashima, Rave Master, vol. 10 (Tokyopop, 2001)

With the end of the Demon Card storyline in vol. 9, what's Mashima going to do? We start out vol. 10 with a quick trip back to Garage Island, where Shiba tells Cattleya how he became the first Rave Master, and then we get back to Haru and company, now joined by Let. The gang are low on cash. Their problems seem to be solved when they find a floating casino, but they find a lot more trouble than they do money. Looks like the series is as strong as ever. ****
