Dynamic and truthful, inspirational and wise; Iyanla Vanzant, author, orator and authority on spirituality from an African perspective, delivers a soaring message of faith and empowerment to Black men and to their mothers, daughters, and wives. Long known as the country's leading authority on spirituality and empowerment of Black women, Iyanla Vanzant now offers a message of faith, self-knowledge, and courage for Black men in struggles, crises, and victories we face in today's society. Teaching Black men to recognize and tap the energy of our own spirits, Vanzant uses a brilliant and transforming blend of ancient African spirituality, practical self-help advice, and contemporary faith to help Black men—and the women who love them—nurture the strength and power that are our birthright.
In Peace From Broken Pieces New York Times best-selling author Iyanla Vanzant she recounts the last decade of her life and the spiritual lessons learnedfrom the price of success during her meteoric rise as a TV celebrity on Oprah, the Iyanla TV show (produced by Barbara Walters), to the dissolution of her marriage and her daughters 15 months of illness and death on Christmas day. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Iyanla shares why everything we need to learn is reflected in our relationships and the strength and wisdom she has gained by supporting others in their journeys to make sense out of the puzzle pieces of their lives. A great book written (for a change) for the guys, but it also has insights for the ladies too. It's not easy for men to embark, let alone take a spiritual path. Yet, both sexes have to realize that we are all spiritual beings in human form ... when(ever) we become disconnected from our spirituality, we just don't have the enjoyment in life that we really want. Yet, page 115 strikes me as what is needed in addition to finding and embarking upon one's spirituality: mind and honor your character! Doing so, will take one a long, productively postive way!
I gave this book a low rating because i think the book was simply a horrible read. i couldnt agree with Iyanla and continued to wait for something different somehing more meaningful other than her repitious concepts. if nothing more this book is a complete juistification of why she feels men are inadequate and provides continous excuses for men
A great book about Yoruba tradition and its application in modern life. Unfortunately the book is written only for a black audience as opposed to most books which are for anyone who can read it. If you can see past that and apply it to your own situation it's a very good introduction to Yoruba.
While I enjoyed the book, I was not able to successfully follow the principles on a daily basis. As a result I did not reap the benefits. I would love to re-read and give it a try!
Personally, this is one of my favorite books. I first became familiar with Iyanla Vanzant from watching her hit show Iyanla: Fix My Life, on the OWN network. There she would often introduce this book to her guests as suggestive reading. I’ve always found her opinions and insights to be extremely informative. Speaking as a black man in America, this book truly speaks to my spirit. From perspective to practice, The Spirit of a Man is filled with countless valuable gems.
