Extract

Great art Thou, O Lord, and greatly to be praised; great is Thy power, and Thy wisdom infinite. And Thee would man praise; man, but a particle of Thy creation; man, that bears about him his mortality, the witness of his sin, the witness that Thou resistest the yet would man praise Thee; he, but a particle of Thy creation.

Synopsis

Augustine's Confessions is an eclectic mix of autobiography, philosophy, theology, and Christian Bible critical exegesis. Augustine's life is traced in the first nine Books (or chapters) of the work, from his birth (354 A.D.) to the events that occurred shortly after his conversion to Catholicism (386 A.D.). Augustine, on the other hand, sees this autobiography as much more than a way to narrate his life, and there isn't a single occurrence that isn't accompanied by a religious or philosophical explanation. In reality, Augustine chose the events he recounts primarily in order to address these wider themes.

Early church father and philosopher Saint Augustine served from 396 as the bishop of Hippo in present-day Algeria and through such writings as the autobiographical Confessions in 397 and the voluminous City of God from 413 to 426 profoundly influenced Christianity, argued against Manichaeism and Donatism, and helped to establish the doctrine of original sin.

An Augustinian follows the principles and doctrines of Saint Augustine.

People also know Aurelius Augustinus in English of Regius (Annaba). From the Africa province of the Roman Empire, people generally consider this Latin theologian of the greatest thinkers of all times. He very developed the west. According to Jerome, a contemporary, Augustine renewed "the ancient Faith."

The Neo-Platonism of Plotinus afterward heavily weighed his years. After conversion and his baptism in 387, Augustine developed his own approach to theology and accommodated a variety of methods and different perspectives. He believed in the indispensable grace to human freedom and framed the concept of just war. When the Western Roman Empire started to disintegrate from the material earth, Augustine developed the concept of the distinct Catholic spirituality in a book of the same name. He thought the medieval worldview. Augustine closely identified with the community that worshiped the Trinity. The Catholics and the Anglican communion revere this preeminent doctor. Many Protestants, especially Calvinists, consider his due teaching on salvation and divine grace of the theology of the Reformation. The Eastern Orthodox also consider him. My advice for anyone wishing to undertake this book is to make sure you find a modern translation. I have to assume one exists. I read an edition that was translated into English in 1876 and it’s full of Thees and Thous, dost’s and knoweth’s. It was a slog.

St. Augustine thank you so much for writing this! Above all the books I've read so far, you have been my go-to heart space! Whenever I face a hardship one or more of your quotes pop into my head. I want to make it to heaven so I can meet you and many other saints. This book was kinda like a mirror to my life. Pursuit of esoteric knowledge, the world, the flesh and everything in between only to continue to feel empty and left wanting. Until I found the Lord and realized what St. Augustine said was true for me too,
" You made me for yourself oh Lord, and I am restless until my heart rests in you."
Thank you St. Augustine for helping me understand nothing on earth will ever cure my hearts homesickness. That earth is not my home, only my ship ❤️
