Thorough and fun — a good resource to have laying about. This title never fails to start my toddler questioning, and the conversations we have about how everything is connected translate well to so many other subjects. Definitely one to own.
Me and My Amazing Body is written by Joan Sweeney and illustrated by Annette Cable. It was published in 1999 and has not won any awards but probably should. This book is a wonderful science, nonfiction introduction to the human body for preschool through around second grade. A little girl introduces us to our bodies and by progressively peeling away her exteriors features; teaches us about our muscles, skeleton and organs vital to our daily life. This is a fun, colorful book. The cartoon art is just realistic enough to get an “ewww” from your readers while not scaring them away. The book is packed with facts and information. It is broken down into clear units and is easy to read and understand. The examples of the body parts working inside us are great. They will facilitate a greater understanding when children can feel the muscles in their face, feel their lungs expand and place a hand on their own beating heart. The book ‘s layout lends itself well to any potential “editing” a presenter may need to do based on the maturity of the audience. The concluding message of this book is a positive one; all humans are very much alike, but we are also different, unique and amazing. The pictures of the little girl growing from a baby to an adult is heartwarming. I have read this book to my preschool classes and in Story times and would highly recommend it to any educator. The follow up scientific activates are virtually limitless.
2. This book can be used in preschool up to grade two.
3. This is an informational book about the human body and its parts. This book has a little girl as the narrator of the book, who goes through each part of the body and explains what it does for you. Each page also has a diagram to go along with it. The diagram shows you on the body where the part is that she is talking about.
4. I think this book is a very good and fun way to help students understand the human body. This book is vibrant and full of color. In having the parts labeled it helped me see what exactly she was talking about in each part. The illustrations go right along with what is being talked about which really helps when reading.
5. This book can be used to teach about the different systems in the human body. This book goes into great detail about what each part of the body does. In using this book the students can get a visual of what each part of the body does and where it is in their own bodies.
This book can also be used for them to understand just how amazing the human body is. It can be used when teaching a lesson on differences. Even though everyone is different their bodies on the inside do the same thing. In using this book each child will understand that their bodies are unique and AMAZING!
Me and My Amazing Body by Joan Sweeney is a very detailed, educational book to include within a classroom. I especially enjoyed this book, because of the colorful, detail-orientated illustrations and the ability I had to relate to the information presented.
The illustrations directly related to the words on each page, which was extremely beneficial in understanding the information regarding each body part and systems. Seeing the body from a different perspective was helpful, as well.
Joan Sweeney also did a phenomenal job at describing the body using everyday aspects. For example, she compared the skeleton to a tent, because the skeleton holds up the body similarly to how tent poles hold up a tent. This comparison and many others throughout the book aided in making the book enjoyable and understandable.
Overall, I think this is a great book to include in an upper elementary classroom to introduce body systems and the parts of the body!

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) – ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Our body is made up of so many different things that let us do our daily activities. One boy explains the functions of our skin, bones, muscles, brain, blood, heart, stomach, and lungs. Our body is amazing!
I loved the explanations and illustrations to teach kids the basics about our bodies. It is also an engaging resource for parents and teachers when talking about the human body. I also enjoyed the message at the end that everyone has a similar body even though we may all look different.
With updated illustrations, this book describes the wonders of the human body--and it really is wonderful and amazing. The blurb in the front says that a girl discovers how her body works, but in my version, it's a boy, judging from the clothing and body parts on display. The author makes sure to cover everything from the outside in, discussing the skin, the muscles, and the skeleton as well as the respiratory system and digestive system. The colorful illustrations add to the appeal of this simple but engaging introduction to the body. It's easy to follow the text and images, making this book useful for an elementary science classroom.
In one of the four ME concepts books by Sweeney, the main character explores different biological systems in his body. Illustrations are drawn in a cut away style reveal body parts that lie underneath the skin. Different systems are discussed separately and illustrations have body parts labeled with technical vocabulary. Like the other books, the information is presented with limited narrative text and bold graphic illustration making it easily accessible to young readers.
This is a very good introductory book to the body! My only quibble is that the way it's laid out, the large photo detailing the organs is putting all the internal organs (stomach, kidneys) on the binding so they're not really clear.
Oz enjoyed it and liked learning about bones and skin. He would recommend this book.
This is a wonderful book to introduce children to their bodies. Great illustrations, good, solid facts that are not overkill. Easy to understand but does not talk down to the child.
“Me and My Amazing Body” did a great job of showing the layers in the human body and how they all connected. The illustrations and analogies were wonderful. My favorite part was the fun facts in the back of the book. Super interesting!
This book was a great introduction to teaching children all about their bodies, I only found it a little too detailed for the reception class I was using it for. However, the specific vocabulary was useful for pushing the higher achievers in the class.
Explanation of the workings of the physical body. There are two different versions of this book - the illustrations in one are a boy talking about his body, the other a girl.
So we've decided we're done with birds. We took a vote and now we're studying the human body. It must be stated though that the 5-yr-old is terrified of body books. In fact, I have to hide the ones we own. I wasn't sure how we were going to handle it.
I started by reading this book I found at the library. It's a very easy, very gentle introduction. All the major things are talked about (bones, muscles, heart and blood, lungs, blah, blah, blah) but it doesn't go into detail at all. The pictures show what it being talked about, but aren't super intricate. And the cute little smiling girl is on almost every page.
My older boys liked it, but it was definitely below them. My 5-yr-old said it "was funny, not scary". Score! My almost 3-yr-old was extremely concerned because the girl fell down and cut her knee and needed a band-aid, pronto. Fortunately the next page showed a band-aid on her knee but he had to continue to talk about it for the rest of the book.
An excellent introduction for pre-k through first grade. Non-threatening with just enough information.
This book is an introduction to the human body, geared towards elementary aged students. It touches all of the main points and questions children have about their bodies regarding bones, muscles, blood circulation, and of course, the heart. A lot of younger children are aware of their physical features and what is on the outside of their body, but very few understand the processes that go on inside. This book provides a very basic yet useful introduction to the human body. This is a book that can be used for a Science lesson for Kindergarten or First grade students regarding the human body, and is a good introduction to anatomy. Students are usually really interested in this topic because they feel like they can connect with it in a lot of ways.
Joan Sweeney writes a cute introduction to the human body and its systems from the perspective of a young, caucasian girl. Sweeney points out that some parts of the body (the exterior) can be seen, but there are even more parts underneath the skin. Body systems covered: skin, skeletal, muscular, nervous ("brain"), circulatory, respiratory, and digestive,
This is a very short and basic overview of the body probably targeted for preschoolers or kindergarteners. Older children should already know the information in this book.
The illustrations by Annette Cable are colorful and interesting.
This is a story about the human body. From skin and bones to muscles and blood, this book describes many of the things that contribute to how we function. I think this would be a great story to use in second or third grade, whenever the students are introduced to human anatomy. They can read this book then do an activity where they have to create a human body on construction paper and label some of the parts, like legs, arms, heart, and lungs. There is an example of this towards the end of the story, as well as some fun facts that kids could find interesting.
This is a great book to introduce the human anatomy to elementary students. The book answers some important questions such as: What is inside our bodies? Why do you have bones? What do our muscles do how do they work? How does our body digest foods that we eat?
This book is easy to read and it makes learning about the human body easy to understand. This book is a great way to incorporate literacy into a science lesson.
This book explains basic anatomy in a fun and developmentally appropriate way. It includes a discussion of internal organs, bones, and the circulatory system. The illustrations help make the abstract ideas more concrete, although some teacher adaptation might be needed for children with special needs or children with certain fears, as the illustrations are drawn bisections of the human body, which some children may find frightening or confusing. Topic: Science: anatomy, Self-skills/awareness
PK-2 This book is great for kids up to 8 years old. It explains all aspects of your body such as a discussion of how your skeleton holds up your skin and, at the same time, protects the softer insides of your body. It also discusses your how your muscles work, how your body receives energy from your food, and how your heart, lungs, veins, and arteries all work together.
A beginning book that explains the human body in clear and interesting terms. I liked this one and enjoyed the little message at the end that expressed how unique everyone is too. That's a real nice touch. Recommended if you're looking for something to teach your little one a little more about themselves.
This is a great body book that talks about the parts of the body, bones, muscles, skin, lungs, heart brain, etc.; highly recommended to parents who are looking for a title to explain the components of the human body. (No private parts are mentioned as that's not this books focus.)
40 months - a simple introduction to the body. O is very into learning about everything under our skin from the nerves and bones to blood and muscles so this is a nice easy starting book. We've since moved on to more complex information and detailed illustrations.
I picked this book for another assignment in this class. This book is very informational on our bodies. IT starts out with the basics of our bodies and then goes more in depth. To learn about our muscles and brain and veins.
