Reading this efficient recap of American history, from after the Civil War to the Nixon Administration, was a timely and needed re-affirmation of historical reality - at this time when certain politicians and talk-show hosts feel at liberty to rewrite our history to build their fame and fortunes.

Writing a textbook re-introduction to American history, the authors organized their descriptions of events around the then-prevalent political and ideological arguments. They followed how these arguments affected events and were later affected by events themselves, as competing ideas evolved through the changing political landscape and in reaction to emerging contingencies.

One aspect of American politics they covered seemed particularly pertinent to today's situation: The degree to which the out-group was often willing to work against the good of nation and society for political vengeance - perhaps for some short-term gain, but in most cases to a long-range loss of credibility or respect.
