While trying to make it through elementary school in Racine, Wisconsin, a thirteen-year-old Armenian American boy must come to terms with his heritage, his parents' expectations, and his own uncertainty about what he wants from life
Asking the River is the story of an Armenian-American boy who is struggling with his identity. He fights against the structures around him as he struggles to find out who he really is. He eventually seems to find some hope in writing and believes that that is the road to his healing and the key to what he is on the earth to do.
While this book deals with many common Third Culture Kid issues of struggling to figure out who you are when caught between various cultures, it does not satisfactorily solve any of them. It contains only empty musings and is very shallow. Overall, I did not find it a very worthwhile read.
Note for parents: The main character uses foul language.
