Silent Lodge

I’m from New Orleans, that’s N’awlins for those of you who speak the language. I grew up in the Riverbend, or Carrollton, for the old timers, but was a Quarter rat from the age of 11, taking 3 buses to go to art class on Burgundy Street at the Cabrini Doll Museum and NORD center. I attended University of New Orleans and have a BA in Fine Art. My mother worked at Tulane University, six blocks from our house and when we were kids my brother and I parked cars in our driveway for the Saints games at Tulane Stadium. We could get six cars down the drive, two on the front lawn, and two on the street and we only charged $2 a car. We made enough to buy a coupla roast beef po’boys at Comeaux’s on Hickory St. and a snowball over at Williams Snow Ball Stand. We lived 1/2 a block from a cemetery, but doesn’t everyone in N’awlins? We used to watch jazz funerals from our front porch.
Now, my family lives in Katy, Texas. I have a “real” job, a truly supportive and understanding husband, two incredible kids, and a slightly neurotic dog. We used to have a guinea pig, but the dog killed it. Did I say slightly?
My son is 15 and has Asperger’s Syndrome (high functioning Autism) and Crohn’s Disease, and is a constant lesson in patience, acceptance and managing expectations. He’s super smart, loves video games, fencing, movies, building with legos, and hanging around the house. Like me, he believes that it’s all about him. Sometimes, I wonder if I don’t have Asperger’s, too. Oh, and he’s very handsome.
My daughter, 13, is so creative it’s scary- she loves to paint, draw manga and anima, build dioramas with any box she can get her hands on, create worlds with legos and then make movies with them, sculpt people, animals and objects with those little twist ties from the grocery store, does pottery, and wants to be a lifeguard. And she’s smart, too. And
beautiful, inside and out.
I write for a few hours in the evenings and on weekends as much as I can, without neglecting my family. (That laughter you hear is my husband) I attend a critique group, and do whatever the kids are into at the time.

This book had Heart(s). I loved Arvel. Peter and Gareth had great manly chemistry and witty banter. Caelin was a welcome surprise. I couldn't quite figure out where he would fit in when he was first introduced and didn't catch on until much later in the book. Additionally, Arvel's disabilities were also a surprise that gave the book an added level of interpersonal connection that called to both Peter and Gareth natural protective nature.
While I feel the emotional connection in the first book, The Mercenary’s Tale (In the Company of Men, #1) is hard to beat, this one took a great shot at trying to live up to it.
Oh, also, the POV shifts from Peter to Arvel to Gareth to Drake to Logan to Caelin many times. Just depends on who is the main player in the scene being written. In ebook format, at times it was difficult to tell which POV we were getting but it was always clear within the first sentence or two. It didn't make me re-read or start over to try and figure it out. Most of the time it was seamless. I know some people don't like this type of writing style, I enjoy it. I like getting different perspective on what is happening.
I enjoyed seeing Drake and Logan again, however, Jackson and Will are noticeably absent.
Since the book ends as Gareth is off on a dangerous mission (that I am sure will go awry) I expect we can look forward to book 5 in this series. I hope we can revisit with all of our lovers from past books again as they band together (I assume) to save him.
Did I mention that I love, love, love the cover.

I really liked the fact that one of the characters from the first book, Peter, comes back as the main character in this fourth volume. He's had a very hard time of it and this is the story of his healing and shows how he finds happiness again.
I loved this volume as much as the others. These characters are just so real, their emotions so touching that they pulled me right into their world. There are a few very interesting pairings in this story and the solution at the end means happiness for everyone. What more can a consummate romantic like myself ask for?

Well, I can definitely say that this was my least favorite book in this series. I really didn't like the addition of the fourth at the end. It just didn't work for me. However, I loved the relationship between Peter, Gareth, and Arvel so I still gave it three stars.

This was my least favorite of the series so far. I'm not sure if it was the number of characters involved, or that it was mostly sex with very little moving plot. What wasn't sex, which was really hot, by the way, was very repetitive - Peter not believing he can find love a second time, rehashing over and over how he felt for Arvel and Gareth but that he didn't love them, etc. I wasn't sure how I felt about Caelen coming into the picture, but I think it worked for the story. I wasn't thrilled with the insta love Peter and he had, especially after Peter spent the entire book talking himself out of it with anyone. Still looking forward to the next segment though, so I'm off to get started.

Best in the Series
NOTE: I have read all five novels in the series and IMHO the chronology is wrong in the volume numbers. I strongly suggest you read them in the following order: The Mercenary’s Tale, His Duke’s Gift, Silent Lodge, Jackson’s Pride, Baymore’s Heir. All of these books are roughly half filled with extended and descriptive carnal scenes. Given the era this is not surprising but the depth of homoeroticism is a surprise, and a welcome one.
In this one, which follows His Duke's Gift chronologically but not numerically, we get to know Peter, a man who has had one erotic encounter with men--his lords Logan and Drake--before marrying and awaiting fatherhood. But tragedy strikes, and you can see what happens in the far too extended blurb.
This book is the best in the series because the characters are so diverse and so real. Peter is an astonishingly brooding and guilt-ridden character who takes quite some time before he comes to the realization that he should try to move on. Arvel is a magnificently drawn deaf-mute whose actions and feelings are lovingly set out by author Lorenz. Gareth is a powerful, but loving, presence who brings a subtle stability to an evolving poly relationship. And Caelin, while the least developed of them all, adds a spicy addition to an already hot group of men.
This one has it all--love, hate, adventure, betrayal, violence, and just wall-to-wall heat. Be sure you read The Mercenary's Tale and His Duke's Gift first, and then saddle up for a real ride through the countryside.

June 28, 2012More light than the previous books in this series, mostly since the story is mainly set in an isolated lodge in the forest giving the characters more freedom, it follows the same trend of mixing together strong and domineering men with more gentle and kind companions. Peter is the captain of Duke Logan; in a previous book Logan and Drake, a pair, shared their bed with Peter, but Peter is bisexual, and he is in love with his wife, and so that was only a passing fling. Unfortunately Peter’s wife dies in childbirth, and Peter convinced himself it was the punishment for his sin. Despite this, when Logan sends him to Marsden Lodge, an hunting lodge in the northern border of his dukedom, Peter falls in lust (not love) with Arvel, the deaf mute caretaker of the place. Arvel is petite and pretty like a forest fairy (no pun intended), with big lavender eyes and long red hair; he would have not survived the harsh life of a medieval village if not for the help of Gareth, a big and burly mercenary that between hirings comes back to Arvel and helps him. That of Arvel with Gareth is love, but Arvel is really like a forest creature, welcoming and friendly with everyone who shares with him a kind spirit. And so Arvel welcome Peter not only inside the lodge, but also in his bed. And when Gareth comes back to him as usual, Arvel wants for Gareth and Peter to be lover like he is with Gareth. Everything is perfect if not that Peter understands his relationship with Arvel, or even the one he will build with Gareth, is not love; this will be righted by him meeting with Caelin, a young man who destined to priesthood, was shunned due to his sin of homosexuality.
Silent Lodge is an erotic tale, the various relationship in this tale, between Logan, Drake and Peter, between Peter, Arvel and Gareth, and between Peter and Caelin, are built upon sex, and only in some cases they developed in love. But the sex is without regret, especially when there is the chance to deepen the relationship beyond a simple escapade. These men don’t consider what they are doing a sin, because they are not harming anyone; this is even more evident due to the isolation of the lodge: who can be affected by their actions if no one is aware of what they are doing? Basically the sin is only that since people, and not God, stated it.

There's no doubt this book is historical and fiction, but the characters are more than just hot they are lovable and you'll fall head over heels for them they way I did. I've read this awhile back and darn if I didn't realize I hadn't written my review on it yet so here it is, pronto.
I'll just put it this way: You can't lose with reading one of Lynn's books and she the bomb! Totally! She walks the walk, talks the talk and can she ever write the story that'll capture your interest and your heart. She blew me away again with this one and as always I'm constantly hungry to read her books. I don't bullshit when I tell to read this one. You won't regret it!

This is the fourth in Ms. Lorenz's In the Company of Men series. This book follows Baymore's Heir. Duke Logan's Master of Arms Peter is mourning his wife who died in childbirth. Logan and Drake sense that Peter needs a change of scenery and so send him out to learn news of their enemy. This brings Peter to Arvel and Gareth, two men that he finds he cannot resist. What Peter discovers is that he does have the capacity to love again, and he's surprised in who he comes to love. Another page turner from Ms. Lorenz!

I loved this book, really loved it.... until the last 50 pages, or so!
But then.... Why, I'm asking, Why in the hell.... the fourth??? And why in the end, when Peter, Arvel and Gareth were already a family, finding in the lodge their little piece of heaven!?
The three of them were so well matched! Why add one person more??
If there was a different ending, maybe my vote would be five stars! But with the ending surprise? Three is the best I can give

It's obvious to me that this author doesn't know when to stop. If she would just quit throwing in unnecessary people and turning points I'd really love her books, but alas she doesn't. Great ideas that go too far in execution...surprising since I find most of the authors I tend to not like do the opposite. Still, in the end, the results are the same...mediocre story telling.

Nice story although the addition of a fourth so late in the story felt a bit strange to me. Overall though a good continuation of the series.

No yet ready to post a full review but like all Lynn Lorenz "mercenaries stories" it is very hot and intense.
